Hello Bill.

I was in no way, shape or form felt that you acted rude or abrupt with your reply to my question, I know there is a huge difference at looking at a model a few feet away than looking at pictures, and also I understand it was not just a one person's decision.
There was no need to apologize, so we are still friends.

I do have a question. I was under the impresion all I had to do was show up with a model and apply to participate in the event, Can you please elaborate about the invitational part, for my benefit as well as other members who may not be aware of the rules.

Angel,

No, you don't just show up with a plane and enter. You will need to contact Frank Tiano or one of the officials, and send them photos of the plane along with some general information (size, who built it, whether or not it is a kit, or was built from plans or scratch built from your own design. If Frank feels that there is an interest in the model, or if the model has some significance, then you will be asked to provide more information, and then you may get an invitation.

This is done to keep the more basic planes that you would see at the local events out of the top echelon of competition. There is a class for the more basic plane and that is called Pro Am (AM). Why don't you give it a try. You can always work your way up to the higher classes of competition,

Have you made any progress in trying to interest one of the kit cutters in offering the WACO YMF-5 1/5 scale kit? If so, and even if not, please include me in your list of potential buyers.

Thanks,

Jim Dunstan

Jim,

I don't think that there is any reason to have these kits produced any longer. We are now able to purchase the plans and templates and can cut your own. If you ask any of those who have completed the plane from these plans and templates I think that you will find that there is more satisfaction from doing it this way than there ever was from one of the kits.

I will have to admit that Ican do a much better job of making a stack of ribs that are all the same, instead of what I found in my kit. The diecut lite ply ribs in the Pica kit leaves a lot to be desired. Now,if they were CADdrawn and lazer cut, it would definitely be worth it and would be a beautiful kit.

ON another subject, I have been looking for the narrow piano hinges some of you are using on the ailerons. I saw them somewhere, but now I can't find the source. I guess Ihave spent several hours searching for them. Any help would be appreciated.

I delivered my 25% Pepino Plans built Waco to the Waco museum in Troy today. They were very excited to get it and were looking for the proper place to display the plane. I will be going back there in September and I will get some pics then.
Later!!

Hi Ace,

Thanks again for the link. While this topic is "hot", what size did you use and how did you attach them to the wing and aileron? I'm considering the 1/2 inch (1/4 " on each side of the hinge) . It appears the screws (?) will have to be counter sunk to allow for max deflection on the down aileron. If that's what you used, did you just harden up the balsa with CA?

Thanks,

Joe

I used the 1/2" and attatched them with 00x1/2" screw's. After assembly and knew all was ok, removed the screw's and ca'd the hole's, then reassemble. Filed about half the head's off for good clearance.

Bill:

Thanks for your advice re cutting my own versus trying to find a kit. I have ordered the plans and templates from AMA, and I am anxiously awaiting them so I can start ordering material.  It seems that some of the sites referenced in the early posts have gone away entirely or moved.  Today I located the new site for what was Stan's Fibertech.  But I am still frustrated that I cannot connect to the House of Moy website to download the manual.  Has this site expired, or has the information moved to another site?

I am only up to page 200 of your historic thread, and I am enjoying the witty repartee among the many WACO enthusiasts.  But I am frustrated that I have not yet read the punchline about Sierra's interest in making scale landing gear struts.  And I am dying to see photos of your adjustable stab mount.  Can you direct me to the pages that contain this information?

Again, many thanks for starting this thread and for your guidance.

Jim,

Send me a PM with your email and I'll send you a copy of the manuals from HoM. The site was gone for a long time, came back recently, but looks like its gone again.

Dan - that's a 44 page manual! . I was actually able to send one out using the free version of Adobe SendNow - I think I can probably send a few more that way. Let me try if Jim sends his email, if I can't then, it's over to youa few pages at a time, I guess.

If you have trouble getting that document out, let me know. I can set you up to upload it onto a file exchange site and we can have anyone that needs it download it from there. Might be easier than trying to email.

Steve - a PDF is pretty well compressed as is, you don't buy much when you zip it.

Marko - looks like the file is out there for download for 7 days on SendNow. I think I'll leave it as is - I don't do this enough (transfer large files, that is) to really investigate cloud storage. Thanks for the offer though.

Jim - here'sa link to the original manualthat was on HoM. The link is valid till May 15th.

https://sendnow.acrobat.com/?i=WKHvMjXHQy24CpMvf4JN1g

I didn't upload the revised manual, since it will email easily. You really should have it - it contains a lot of thecritical basic improvements that are featured in this thread. If you want it, PM me your email address and I'll send it to you.

Regardless of what the outcome of this is, I would keep checking HoM regularly. I suspect it will come back again.

Jim, The gear from Sierra was never produced, as far as I know, a prototype was never built. There are no "instructions" per se on the adjustable stab. I did post some pictures of mine, and I think Dan (mrdhud) and Robert (ACERC) built their planes with Bills adjustable stab. Between us you should be able to add the adjustable stab to your plane. It will be much easier to plan for it in the initial stages rather than ( as I did) modify a partially built airframe.

Thanks to Andy, Jim and all others who responded to my request for information. I have downloaded the original manual from the website Andy cited, but I would still like to have the shortened manual with all of the recommended changes to the original. I will search for Jim's pictures of the adjustable stab mount. I could probably design my own, but it is always easier to "be the second person to do something first".

Jim, Post #1619 shows it and how I made it. Look on the first page for information. The Index will take you to a lot of things. I think that the short manual is shown there too.

As to the gear, Darryl (the owner of Sierra Giant Scale kept telling me for weeks on end that the gear was at the welding shop and would ship on Friday. I don't remember how many times he told me that. He did not have any intention of making the gear, and to top it all off, he kept my plans. He now avoids me when we are at the same events. I'll make my own from tube steel and rod with bronze bushings. It should not bee too difficult if you are, or have access to a good welder.
