Watcha Buildin'?

RE: Watcha Buildin'?
The weather is already "dodgey" in Northern Michigan. Flying days are at a premium.
With this in mind, I've started an old IKON kit, of the Cessna Airmaster, in 1/4 scale.

RE: Watcha Buildin'?
I'm trying to decide on the winter project. I haven't built anything in 25 years, but I've had to do some recovering, and fixing this year. But I've narrowed the choicesto a contender, A tower fun 51, or four star 40. I've always wanted a Contender. But the fun 51 looks pretty easy to build for someone thats been outta the glue fumes for awhile. The 4 * seems like a good build also, and I'd like to support Sig's comeback. SO, any thoughts on this guys?
Thanks,
Zipp

zippome; If you're looking for something to build, I like your idea of supporting Sig. I'd go with that idea.
My Airmaster build is moving along quickly.

Zipp, you inspire me to work on my Yak18 today. loyalty to Sig. it's raining out and fall season is coming on New Hampshire strong the next week or so! time to get inside and glue my fingers. LOL Zipp, have you consider the beautiful SIG Senorita for building? i have built the kit and scratch built a few of these and they look and fly super on a 40 engine. many mods have been but on them by builders. like taildragger with a military livery and they look great! don

RE: Watcha Buildin'?
Well AirBoss, I allready have a kadet senior that I inherited. It was the plane that got me back into the hobby last year. It is a great flier and instilled the confidence I needed to move onto new planes this year. (I got bit by the bug!) I flew an ARF early this year, but it was destroyed by a battery failure. (learned not to trust old batteries) And now I'm flying a Slow Poke that I picked up at at a swap shop and recovered. But now I want to build one. I feel it's more of a complete hobby that way.
Here's the Senior,And the 'Poke.

The Senior is a wonderful plane in the air. on a hot day the wing is so big it will give you shade as it fly's by. LOL it also fly's like a truck. big for sure. don

Hey Zipp,
A Four Star would be a great transition plane from the Kadet Senior... I don't know how the Fun 51 builds but I do know the T/F kits are great and I have a Four Star 120 that will be a great build too. I'm with Tom Crump for supporting SIG.
BTW... I received this e-mail from Sig A few days ago:
Dear Modeler,
In February 2011 SIG Manufacturing Co., Inc. was purchased by Herb Rizzo (President), David Martin (VP and General Manager), and Ron Petterec (VP). All three gentlemen are successful businessmen and lifelong modelers providing the ideal base for SIG to continue offering quality and value to model airplane pilots around the world.
With the new ownership SIG's stock levels have improved daily, e.g. kits, balsa wood, basswood, dope paint, fuel products, hardware are in stock. FYI, attached is our advertisement in the December issues of 'Fly RC' and 'Model Airplane News' (both on sale Oct. 4, 2011).
The new versions of the Kadet Senior EG ARF, Kadet LT-40 EG ARF, Rascal 110 ARF will be available in November/December; more ARF's to come in 2012. Our web site will be updated upon availability.
On October 22-23 come see us at the iHobby Expo* (www.ihobbyexpo.com):
Booth No. 1924
*Donald E. Stephens Convention Center, Rosemont (Chicago), IL
Keep on flying SIG! We appreciate it.
Best regards from Iowa,

They have some great kits and ARFs, plus I think it's great to support our US companies.
Build well,
Ben

RE: Watcha Buildin'?
Hi
This is kinda of off topic but i have a question related to the aspects of a airframe (KIT at one time) !
The plane is a 40 size Cap fairly aerobatic plane and it has some cross braces broken/missing from the formers. Each former has 2 cross braces one on the top and on the bottom, the fuse of the plane itself is sheeted. How much do u think this will hurt the integrety of the airframe for general flying purposes ?
Iam debating if i should repair this or save weight and leave it be ?
Any help would be appreciated
Thanks Scott

Finish up a 40 size super sportster, and build a new trainer since mine had an un planned landing Maybe recover my Taylorcraft also, never was happy with it the first time.

Sig Mustang 450, about 30+ years old. I glued the fuse side together and that's as far as I got. Next will be REbuild my Hanger CAP 232 and hopefully a good start on a 20% scale Zlin 526 from MAN plans. The short kit is available from Laser Design Services. The short kit will help a LOT. Here is a link to some info on the Zlin.

RE: Watcha Buildin'?
I am finishing off a Balsa USA North Star Then I am going on to a Ultra Sport , then a Tiger 60...I also have some maint to do on my BUSA 1/3 Cub...I am hoping Santa brings me a 1/4 scale Cub kit but Santa is pretty good at keeping her lips sealed about stuff like that...I have a 1/5 scale cub, in fact I have two, one I am flying and a Hanger 9 ARF that I won...I also have Two Balsa USA 1/3 scale Cubs, one on floats and one on wheels but I dont have a 1/4 scale Cub...I find the 1/3 scale a little big somtimes and the 1/5 scale a little small so the 1/4 scale would be really nice.. The Cub is one of my favorite planes..I think I have learned more about flying with my Cubs than any other plane...The first RC plane I ever built was a Sterling Piper Tri Pacer.. It turned out pretty nice and when I brought it out to the field to get sombody to help me fly it the guys could no believe I had built a scale plane to train on . They convinced to put it aside and build a trainer to train on..I was so disapointed but I loved that Tri Pacer enough that I saved till I knew how to fly...That started my love for Pipers about 35 yrs ago...It dosent seem so long...The plane I built to train on was called a Evolution. I cant rember who made it,maybe Dumas..It was a cool kit,it had plug in wing tips that you add on and change it from about a 48 inch wing span to a about a 72 inch wing span...It was almost a glider at that point and it would fly nice and slow..Only 3 chan...You could flat spin it rite to the ground with out hurting it..Just like a helicopter...
Good luck with your winter projects..Ultra Sport Brotherhood # 100 Biker BC

RE: Watcha Buildin'?
Like Mich weather, ours is turning wonkie as well. You grab a couple hours of flying here and there at this time of year. Unless you want to go flying indoors, and to me, flying vapours and other such...boring slow flying things does not toot my horn. So it's building time. For me it's finish off the Platt spitfire that I have been working on all year, its glassin and painting time. After that it's the refurbish of my goldberg Ultimate bipe. After that since I have to wait till xmas to open it, I have a Great planes 40 sized extra 300S kit to build. If I get really bored I may roll out the plans and start scratch building the CL-215 I have been meaning to start for 10+ years.

I have two Carl Goldberg kits that will be here in a couple of days, the Tiger 60 and Super Chipmunk. The Tiger will be first off th building board. I also have the plans for the Lou Andrews Aeromaster that I plan to build down the road.
Oh, poo! This thread reminded me that I still need to order my new flight box kit from Sig![X(]

Tom, nice build. is that a G-38? i had one on my Stinson Sr-8. i love that big plane flew so scale a real. had to mod the landing gear completely. top flite kit had a flaw in there 2 pc design. it landed great from there on. don

RE: Watcha Buildin'?
Yup, it's a G-38. It must be 15 years old.
I have an IKON Stinson SR-8, but it's powered ny a Saito 300 twin. My IKON Monocoupe has a G-38, along with my Sig Bravo.
