I fly my 1/5th with the Saito 100. It's got more power than needed for the 1/5th, but not for the 1/4 scale unless you want to fly slow.

I have the Magnum 1.60 twin. It easily flew my 1/4 Sig Spacewalker. It will go in a BUSA Smoothie XL, next.

I like the engine, but I switched out the stock needle valve and seat for the OS equivalent. The engine holds needle settings better, now.

The important thing to think about is whether you have enough power to toss the Cub around on a windy day. It's not a racer so you don't have to go fast for scale-like flight (unless you want to, of course), but will you be able to fight a headwind when you come back into the pattern for landing.

Just my $.02

Bob

Take what the box recommends. Then add 30% that should be about right.

Anyone build one of these with a zenoah g26? Would that be under powered? I have one laying around. I have been leaning towards the ASP 160 twin but was thinking the g26 could save me some money. Also forgot to mention in my original post this is my first cub build so I’ll probably have plenty of dumb questions as the build goes along.

I have the Hangar 9 Taylorcraft with a g26 on it and it flys great. Wingspan is 80 inch and weights about 15lbs. Also had the Hangar 9 Super Cub with a g26 and that flew good also.

The G-26 is plenty of power for the Sig and BUSA 1/4 Cubs. The problem is that there isn't much cowl left after you fit the engine.

That's true. The TC has a much wider fuse. I also have two planes with OS FT-160 on them so that engine would be a good fit too.

I did see the Sig clipped wing with the OS twin in it . That sounded very cool. They seem to be out of stock everywhere at the moment. I think Chief or Tower are supposed to get them in mid May.

I had one years ago with a G-23 in it. It flew well on land and floats. A G-26 would be great on it, especially if you lighten it up a little. There is a lot of wood you can take out of that airplane.

Question for the brothers, does the 1/4 scale L-4 on cubman's website have true to scale ailerons? I want to build an L-4 but it must have scale ailerons. I've read about 35 pages of this thread so far but haven't found much info on scale ailerons yet. Thanks for your time.

Just a few photos from my Aileron build for my L4. The plans on my site are full detailed to make this type of aileron for a SIG or Balsa USA cub. On my L4 plans I sale this is how the ailerons are drawn on the plans. If you order the ailerons plans from my site you get the plans for them along with a 6 page instructions on building them.

Default 1/4 scale cub hinges and horns

While most won't go to the trouble scale presents, they aren't that difficult to make. DuBro clevises, size 40 soldered to a 1/4" brass tube works well, 1/8th " brass makes a nice scale control horns, Pictures posted are on a super cub but the ailerons are the same on a J3 cub.

Default Scale ailerons

Thanks Leroy and cubman, that's what I needed to know. Great pictures btw. This will be my first scale project and I figured scale ailerons were an important part to get right.
I'll be placing my order for plans this week.

Cubman,
I looked at both BUSA and Sig's kits and neither were close enough to scale for me and I certainly can't afford Paolo Severin's 1/4 scale kit I figured building from plans was the way to go. I've heard and read that your plans were really nice. Thanks a bunch for the Cub Den, I've picked up some great tips and techniques that work on any model.

My first 1/4 scale cub was a sig. Flew it for a few months till it crashed do to a engine issue and me being new to the hobby. I have looked at bot Sig and Balsa USA plans and have scanned them in and placed a scale drawing on top of them. neither are true to scale. Each has some items that are close This is why i set down and have drawn my own plans. I would love to find someone to cut kits for me. My dream someday is to have a laser cutter and can do them.

Have you approached any of the independent laser cutters? I'm sure you could find one who would love the job of cutting short kits.

Hello, all information about my wooden kits and all other products you can find in my web site: NS Modelers

For wooden kit, shipping from Serbia (part of ex Yugoslavia) to USA is about 80,00 - 100,00$, depend of box weight.
For smaller box, for example for sets, shipping is between 15,00 - 25,00$

For more information please send me e-mail: [email protected]

Best regards

Mirce

Quick question for Cubman, what cowl did you use on your 1/4 scale L-4?
