Fixed my screw up on the right wing, both wing tops are done, just have the bottoms to do. For some reason when spraying the dope it came out flat, so going to brush on a final coat of white underneath and they will be done.

Look nice acdii, just fitting for the 4th celebrations... how did you go about fixing it?, couldn't tell by the photo there was ever a problem.

John M,
Thanks.

I remasked using Tamiya tape on the colored side, did a very light sanding since I didn't want to burn the Koverall, then a heavy coat of clear, followed by the white. Took about 3 coats to fully cover it. I think it looks pretty good, the bottom though I left white with just the tip blue angled from the second to last rib to mid point of the second to last bay.

Ok, glad you got it sorted out... I like the color scheme, nice and bright (colorful)... at least with the bottom being blue and white, you'll know when she's right side up, or upside down,

Well the majority of the painting is done to the point where I can start assembling the rest of the plane. Got the gear mounted and the fairings on, ready to cover, the door is covered, the window is in process, and the ailerons are covered.

I think the bottom of the wing is a bit weak so will match the angle that I have on the bottom of the fuse on the wing. The struts will also be painted blue and red, the gear fairings red. Now to get rid of the blush on the wings.

I realized this morning, I woke up early and had time to think of my next steps and it dawned on me I never put the control horns in the ailerons! So I went downstairs, looked at the one I had built for the clipped wing which has the horn in, and then looked at the two regular ones and sure enough, no horns. Damn, now I have to pull the covering off to fit the horns in. I know I can just open the bay where the horn goes, but so much for the nice neat covering job.

I usually remember the horns where I get into trouble is I get the occasionally T-nut that decides to pop out of it's hole no matter how well glued it is. It's also always the one that requires some sort of covering removal and surgery to get it back in!

Only cut the bottom and apply a patch over the area

Hmm Well I do have a helicopter pilot that seems to be the correct scale. I could paint an Oh Crap look on his face and velcro him to the wing strut.

That sucks acdii, minor set back... I'll have to agree with Cub Man, cut out the peace of covering to gain access to mount the control horn and then make a patch... but cut the covering where there's an open bay, don't cut into the sheeted area, except for the narrow slot for the horn to stick out of.

Another thought, is there a different type control horn that you can use where it can be screwed on and have the screws pass through the entire aileron... something like this, but with longer screws http://shop.dubro.com/p/t-style-nylo...ty-pkg-2?pp=12 ... since the original horn attaches to the side of a rib... you could take one of those dubro type control horns and position it so it straddles that rib, and then have the screws pass through either side of the rib... that way you wouldn't have to cut into your covering at all.

***EDIT***

Or what about these http://shop.dubro.com/p/adjustable-c...ty-pkg-2?pp=12 ... the mounting hole could be positioned so its right along side the rib... then once you get them adjusted for the correct throw you want, you can cut the excess length off, if there is any to cut... they're 1.5 inches long... how thick are the ailerons?

John, acdii -

What about these?

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...140708031423:s

Nice big plate surfaces mean you can cut away a flap of covering to install reinforcement blocks underneath and still not have the opening visible after the horn is on. I realize they're pretty big though... and at 2 for $9, not exactly cheap. But they can be cut down to size with some creative Dremel work, and I'm pretty sure the included screws ARE long enough.

The horns John linked to are only 2 bolts each on the diagonal; if you try to straddle a rib with them they'll twist. This means you'll have to drill extra holes & use nuts to be able to straddle a rib; the backing plate won't have the extra thick boss area for those extra screws to self-thread into.

of all the tings to buy at Newegg, Dubro control horns would never come to mind! Are they trying to be like Amazon.com?

Same price at Tower Hobbies... http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...&I=LXCVZP&P=SM

lots of other sizes though... http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...3p?&C=QFC&P=SM

I got to admit I was surprised to see a Newegg link too! I guess the technology business is getting tight and they need to branch out.

I linked the NewEgg listing because it was cheapest AND offered free shipping. NewEgg Marketplace has been around for years now; I'm not that picky. When it comes to buying a known product like Du-Bro, IMHO price is king.

The only other one I see in that long list from Tower Hobbies that looked similar in layout (4 extra long bolts, suitable for straddling a rib) is this one:

http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...&I=LXAEJ6&P=SM

While it is cheaper (around $6 shipped), the included screws are only 7/8" long, and it doesn't include the ball joints like the first one. If you need to buy longer screws, you'll be close to the same cost as the ones from NewEgg. Plus, that Du-Bro horn looks rugged enough to use for landing gear; the Great Planes one looks a bit cheesy in comparison, especially with those daggy cad-plated screws.

I opened the covering around where the horn goes. It attaches to a Plywood rib in the middle of an open bay. I will just patch it with a pinked edge patch. My fault for not attaching them when I built them.

acdii when you cut the opening, do a proper scale inspection ring portal, that way it will look like its suppose to be there,

Actually there are "official" full scale patches with pinked edges. Used, I guess, to patch accidental holes, and also to close access holes made to inspect the inner works of covered pieces. Look up Fabric patches on a full scale fabric supply source.

Addendum. I was beat to the point by J. M., but still you can look up the patches to get the right scale size. Also a rounded corner on a rectangular patch, or a round patch will look, and stay on, better.

John M,

Yep, thats the same Idea I was having, something that looked like it was supposed to be there in the first place. I dug out the plans and parts, now just a matter of getting them in there. Thankfully I do have one aileron correctly assembled for the Clipped wing set, so I can use that as a guide.

I picked up one of the old Hangar 9 red and white Super Cubs with the 100” wing. It needs some work but is flyable for now. Two items that need replacing are the windscreen and cowl. Does anyone know if the ones for the new SC (blue & white) will fit the old one?

Not going to be easy to find the original replacement parts for that... you can try contacting Horizon Hobbies and ask them if they have any parts still available for it.

Fiberglass Specialtiesinc makes cowls for quite a few of the H9's aircraft... would require painting though.
http://www.fiberglassspecialtiesinc....htm#HANGAR%209

As for the windshield, the new SC fuselage width at the top (at the wing leading edge) is 6 5/8" inches wide, and at the base where the forward window stays meet the fuse is 7" wide... if yours is close to those measurements then you could probably make it fit, or you could cut it down and then repaint as needed... you can always make your own from a sheet of clear plastic; make a cardboard template, get it to fit how you want it, and then use the template to cut out the plastic.

***EDIT***

Here's the parts listing form Hangar9's site for the old 100" super cub... it has the part numbers; may help you in tracking something down.
