RE: BTE Delta Vortex Construction Photos
According to the letter that accomponied the photo of the framed up DV there was another 200% scale version out there... The one pictured here must be it...
FYI -- I have a DV ARF with a 91FX. It's a great flier, but it's hard to transport and since I have moved up to gassers it doesn't get flown much anymore...

I made some stock work on my DV today and I also filled the triangular gap between the wing and the cowl using some scrap and filler
here are 2 more views of the cowl
I like what I see growing on the building board, any way you build a plane, bashing it or not the most important is to be happy and proud of your work

fuel proofing job
Personaly, I use G4 Polyurethan 1-component varnish (a Soloplast product) : fuel resistance is amazing but it STIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIINKS, and is a little bit expensive...

RE: BTE Delta Vortex Construction Photos
Mike, good shots of your construction! I also have purchased the DV . Am looking forward to starting it. How long did it take you to build it.
Remember, some of the photos in this thread (those showing retracts) belong to Salmonbug and not me.
It took me about two weeks of spare time to frame it up, but I'm not the world’s fastest builder....... If you just follow the written directions you'll do fine. I didn't find any place in the construction process that was tricky....or required any more explanation than the manual gave.
I would recommend that you make sure you have a large area to work. As you might be able to see in the photos the DV overhung my work bench (a 36" door). This is covered in the directions and they even mention that it will overhang.
I did have a bit of a flat spot where the center panel sheeting met the LE sheeting. This is where it attaches to the main spar. I used some filler and a 10"x4" sanding block to get a smooth curve it that area.

Yes this is a "problem". I took the oportunity my wife was on hollliday for 3 days with the kids to make the basic airframe on the kitchen's table. Altough I builded a 1/3 spacewalker on it my bilding board was too small !!!
The balsa dust in the kitchen when my wife came back induced a diplomatic incident but I have been able to manage it [>:]

My feeling is that these wing tips are going to be a pain in the *ss to cover... What are your plans SalmonBug ?

well, I already covered several times concave surfaces without any problem. I know it may look difficult, but just use the standard method of a ironing tool working with low eat first and it's piece of cake

Those wingtips look fantastic! Do you think they will be fragile?

Wiz,
About the wingtips, I would like to say also that altough it's my idea to fit the DV with this style of wingtips, they aren't coming out of my imagination. This style of wingtips fit the SIG wonder and the BTE super flying king. Both of those planes are designed by Bruce Tharpe, I simply add the idea to ask Bruce to resize them to fit the DV
For some of my planes I builded them myself. It's a frustrating job, but it's not very difficult. With standard tools it's a one day carving and sanding procedure to make flawless ones

as I expected, ironing those wingtips was a piece of cake as soon you work slowly with a small ironing tool at low temp and a sock on it !
I made a last minut mod on my DV wich I think could interest fellows instaling a retract. Because of the position of the tank behind F2, the fuel lines are very long. I first instaled standard size fuel lines convicted this would be sufficient and that the lost of energy in the tubing would remain unsignifiant. A PM from the valuable member strykass pointing out the potential problems makes me think about it for 2 weeks. I took the oprtunity that the tank access was still easy to change my mind and change standard fuel lines for extra thick one held in place on the tank brass tubing with clips

I believe that at this time of the ironing and painting work it's judicious to permanently install and make a final check of the gear and to also install elevons and rudderr sevo before covering the top . I'll do that tomorrow and after that I will lay the plane aside for the rest of the week. In fact we have the major belgian static RC airplane show on saturday and sunday. every years I display half a dozen of my airplanes and this yaer my DV will be in the batch. It's interesting for peoples new in models or simply visiting to be able to see how it's done inside. I will teporarly install engine, prop, spiner and fins also.....
I duno what hapened to the colors of this pic, but the blue is much more dark, it's navy blue

I don't have a lot of time to build for the moment, but saturday we have a rc airplanemajor static exposition here in belgium. The only DV in belgium will be there of course, so I temporarly mounted engine and fins
this is how it will be displayed
note the rcu logos, prove that this airplane has been comonly builded by fellows sharing knowledges

RE: RE: BTE Delta Vortex Construction Photos
Is it the Wavre show ?
I must admit this aircraft, which is slowly approaching the maiden, has a quite unusual appearance. I think you've really turned it into a curiosity : delta wing + retracts + three blade prop + airspeed sensors ... What a look !
OS engines, RCU, Tru turn, Bruce Tharpe Engineering, ... what 's the lastest one ? EagleTree ? You've forgottent Graupner (the propeller/rc gear) ! And Robart ? Oh yes, they do not deserve it, I remember someone told us their valves tend to leak ...
SalmonBug, how did you make that RCU sticker ? Printed with a PC-based color printer or something more professional ?

I am preparing my planes for the exposition and I introduce you a price winner. Last year the barbie somethin extra received "the award of the public 2003" at the exposition. You see, no need to spend a lot of money to build static winners, juste listen to your childs and make theire dream become reality
