Sig 4 Star 40 Mods
I'm building a 4 star 40 and want to put servos in the wings. I'm a intermediate builder and have been flying for 10+ years. I have never installed servos on there side with the servo arm sticking out. I also was wondering how much bigger to make the vertical fin. Any suggestions on what bay the servo should go in?

Bruce,
It really doesn't matter which bay you use. Generally, I put them about halfway out on the aileron, but you might want to put them so the servo lead still reaches without an extension.
Normally, we add 1 inch in width to the rudder and leave the fin alone. You can also add a half inch to the elevators.

While modifying the 4*, you may want to consider strengthening the fuse sides just behind the trailing edge of the wing. That area is vulnerable to breaking after a hard landing. Also, the stock tail wheel is also a weak point. The Sullivan tail wheel is a good substitute.

For placement of the servo in the wing. I count the bays and go back toward the fuselage one bay. The Airelons are bigger as you get toward the fuselage so I tend to go in that direction.
The photos are of my BTE Venture 60 build.
WOW! I dont know why these photos did not thumbnail!

No access cover. I screwed up on my planning. I am going to make the holes bigger in the wing ribs so it will be easier to pass the lead thru from either open side.
I also sent you two PMs

brschmid,
I simply doubled the fuse sides just aft of the wing saddle with lite ply. When you look at the sides, you will notice the lightening holes are quite large and as a result there is not a lot of wood left. Just place a piece of lite ply under the holes and trace the outline of that part of the fuse on the wood. Cut out the wood and glue to the sides. Pretty simple and it does add considerably more strength.

I added a piece of triangular bulsa stock behind F3 and glued it with the fuseluge side. I think it was F3. The frame directly aft of the wing TE.
DaveB also has a good idea, Wish I would of though of it. I believe the lightening holes have the respective ply cutout in the kit. Can you just glue them in?

RE: Sig 4 Star 40 Mods
Hi Swag.
Update on my Four Star 40. It has been flying just great. I still tend to bounce the landings a bit, not much, but it's different than flying the Tiger 60 which seems to land like it gets sucked onto the landing surface just as smooth as silk (monocoat..ha). The Four Star glides in very nicely, but at flare time, I tend to over land it and it lightly bounces a couple times, something I imagine that I will improve as time goes on.
The engine, an OS46 runs just fine and pulls it along just nicely. On the maiden, a friend Syd Clement of Millville, NJ flew it. He is one of the local pro's and put it through it's paces. He lifted off, trimmed (minimal trim necessary) then climbed up and did these sort of horizontal loops with mixed with very fast aileron rolls then switched to the same thing in the vertical (made me dizzy), then dove it straight down, transitioned to straight up, and landed it, handed me the box and said "Flys good, the fuel system works good to". Jeech.. but I was very pleased with it.
I had to make some minor adjustments to the throttle control, but other than that, it flys just great.
Thanks for the input and for all the help.
I just bought a CG Skylark 56 ARF. Building it now, seems like a nice ARF. Will report on that when I finish.
Dick.

RE: Sig 4 Star 40 Mods
That is good to hear Dick!! I am done for the year. The 4 Star never made it off the ground. Next May probably! Hopefully I'll have 3 planes to perform their first flight. I got a beautiful Somethin Extra ARF on Ebay for a great price. I have a TT Pro 46 in that. Plus I have a SIG SE kit to build.
I just finished the fuel tank hatch for the Venture 60. What a PITA that was!!
Brufettit, Ya got any photos of your progress?

As for the bounce on the 4* it may not be you. The gear on it is very springy. If you land on the mains instead of trying a three point it will help. I land my SE all three at the same time with no bounce and then fly the 4* and do 3 touch and go's on landing.

RE: Sig 4 Star 40 Mods
I was thinking of doing a nose job on mine. I read the article by Tom P. and he said to mount the engine at about 10 O'clock so 60 deg. off vertical. Just worried that the muffler won't clear. I have a OS 46SF that will be powering it.

I have noticed that if you are following the instructions on the Fuse. you need to stop and fuel proof the fuel tank compartment before it is too closed up.
