So my Ultra S 40 is powered by a Thunder Tiger Pro 46 (stock exhaust) but I have an OS 40SR with tuned pipe that I would like to run.....which set up you think will give me the best performance?

Depends on how you describe performance. Level flight top speed? Acceleration and vertical penetration? Usable speed range? Results are heavily dependent on the prop you use on each engine and how the tuned pipe is tuned. What are you hoping to get?

WELL WHILE RECOVERING my 32 year old us60 I debated replacing the servos (same age as the plane) and having never worn out a pot I decided to leave the old servos in. within 10 flights of the new cover job I had just broken off from formation with m son and completed the down wind turn and the plane rolled left (aileron only role) I corrected and it came right back. it happened two more times before I was far enough down wind to roll into a final. I brought it down with hast leveled it to the runway, pulled the nose up and about 10 ft later it rolled left again. I was expecting it but the nose drop was to much for how high I was and I broke it in half at the canopy. I took 10 days and put the jig saw puzzle back together with about 10 flights on it now and the new radio system.

we have noticed that mine (powered by turnagy sk35055-430 turning a 12x12) flys just as fast as my son's (powered by a turnagy sk24358-500 turning a 12x12) on straight and level. in turns, maneuvers, especially vertical mine just walks away from his. so he switched to the same motor as mine and now we are almost = but he does not have a spinner on his and it seams to cost him about 5-10 ft under what mine covers in a low pass. so we are looking to get a spinner to test that assumption.

You have given me new inspiration. I have a US 40 about the same age. It was one plane I built and flew back then that Never crashed. Over the years I have let it sit as I had an OS 45 pump and the Carburetor gave out years ago and I never did repair it. I just built more planes and let it sit. There are a few holes in the covering due to many moves and age. It, too has over 30 year old servos. I have always been hesitant to sell it or get rid of it because it flew so well, and like I say, never crashed. So I kept it sitting in the shop and moved it when we moved.
I have since began using electric in most of my airplanes, This would be a great project to recover and replace the worn out OS with electric. I'm not sure when I'll get it done, but It has moved to the top of my list.

Is there such a thing as too many Ultra Sports? Back during the Perry GA swap meet held by the GAMA airplane club I rescued a 60 size plane that was in really good shape pretty much ready to fly engine and servos but the bottom part of the rudder was broke. What is was is that the builder when he installed the rudder tail wheel he mistakenly glued in the plastic bearing into the rudder instead of the tail post of the fuse. I had to cut the rudder off strip the covering and just simply knock off the bottom part of the rudder and glue on a new piece of wood and sand back to shape recover the rudder and reinstall the tail wheel to properly glue in the plastic bearing of the tail wheel into the tail post of the fuse and boom recover look like it was never broke. The plane was equipped with a Saito 82 golden knight when I was checking out the plane from the seller the engine had pretty much no compression but when I got it home and dribbled some fuel in the glow plug hole and turned it by hand then turned the engine with a starter I then put the glow plug back in and like a Saito the engine had plenty of compression but the bearings were noisy loud so I send the engine to Horizon they put in new bearings and shipped back to the house for only $61. Now I'm waiting for some nice weather to give the plane a go.

The next US is a 1000 the seller told me that the person that was in the process of building the plane past away and what you see is what I bought the fuse was already covered but was missing the canopy and the push rods to the tail feathers and motor mount and ailerons. I told the seller that I'm not worried about those things I most likely have them in my parts box which I did. The wing did have some hangar rash but some sanding and some cutting all that was gone. What drawn me to this plane is that the builder had already made the progress to install retracts so I already have a set of Robart electric retracts to install in this thing so I have everything I need to complete this plane except I did have to go to ebay and buy me a canopy but that is a must to finish this plane. As of this writing I'm waiting for the epoxy to cure in the tank compartment and the engine compartment so next all I have to do is cover the wing and fuel proof the wheel wells install the tank and finalize the balance. I'm going to use a OS 1.20 AX on this plane I really think this engine will make this plane very lively.

If anyone is asking about the wheel wells I used cardboard from the box that you buy a pack of soda. If you take your time the cardboard will be cut to fit from the surface of the sheeting down to the other side of the sheeting. Monokote does stick to the cardboard and then when you fuel proof the wheel wells you then glue down the covering. I will post pictures of the final look here shortly.

Add me to the brotherhood as well! This was my Ultrasport 40 that I built. I loved that thing. I flew it every weekend when I was a kid for years, and even won a interstate/inter club aerobatics comp with it. Such a fun plane

Lazer Works has them. I bought one a year or two ago as mine was cracked and couldn’t patch anymore. If you can’t find them I think I still have the phone number etc. Very nice people there

I got the response re the short kit, which is great. My question is, what is the difference between the Great Planes Ultra Sport and the RCM plans? I actually didn’t know there were multiple versions of the Ultrasport

Someone may have a definitive answer for you but I believe the GP kit may have a few minor differences to make the manufacturing and building a little easier. The wing may be slightly different too but I wouldn’t worry about it. I have a OS .75 on the one I am currently flying but if I build a second, I think I would use a .60 as it may look a little better being smaller.

I bought a few kits when Tower reintroduced the .40 and .60 a few years ago. Wish I had bought a few more. I can still see a stack of US 1000 at Mussers Hobby Shop in Buck, PA years ago. They were $150. I wish I had bought more than one back then 😩

Hi,

I'm planning to start a US60 built this winter using the RCM plans from Outerzone and a short kit. Did you go ahead with your plans? If so, how is it working out? Have any others gone this route and, if so, do you have any pointers to make?

My dad has a US40 kit that he has had for probably 30 years. He's going to start building that this winter, too. It should be fun! When I built my first RC airplane 35 some years ago as a teenager (a Headmaster), he was also building a plane on another bench in the same workshop (a Sweet Stick). Funny thing is, we just flew both of those planes for the first time this summer. Long story. Looking forward to co-building with him again (though we're not in the same workshop now!).

The RCM plans for the US 60 are identical to the kit except for the method used to sheet the sides of the turtle deck. The US 1000 plans are identical to the kit except that the kit added one wing rib on each end to increase the span for IMAC competition. The short wing version is a better flyer.

Jim, any chance anyone could ever bring back as a kit? Any idea how many kits were made when Great Planes reintroduced several years ago? You could probably give a lot of interesting insight to all us UltraSport fans
