Default Modeltech Super Cub

Since I havent seen a thread or review on this plane I guess I'll start one.
I just finished mine, then finish was really good, not too many wrinkles, all I had to do
was re-seal a couple of edges.
It build really easy I had it done in two days, the hardware was
what you would espect from an ARF, fuel tank was crap so I replaced it with a sullivan 12 round tank,
if you go that way you will need to dreemel the fuel tank opening insede the fuse, no bi deal.
The instructions are good except when it come to mouting the wing servo, install the servos out put gear towards the trailing edge
if you install them towrds the leading edge the pre-bent control rods will be too short.
Engine installation pretty simple, you have and option to go electric, both engine mounts(nitro /electric) are inlcuded.
This is a 46 size plane so I installed an OS 91 4 stroke ad replaced the motor mount with a GP adjustable engine mount, to my surprise the plane balanced on the cg whit that big engine and a 5 cell 2400 batt installed about two inches back from the CG.
I also intalled a 2" tail wheel and 4" ballon tires which Im replacing whit some 5 1/2" bollons once they get here.
The plane is a dream to fly whit that big engine full flaps down and ailerons dropped 15 degrees it takes off and l1/4 throttle.
One wheel landing and touch and go's are fun

Looks good! I've been eyeballing this for a while now, I just haven't made the jump. I do have a couple of quesitons...

#1 - The wing struts; are they covered wood or are they aluminum? I'm hoping for aluminum but I'll take what I can get.

#2 - How wide is the fuselage? I've found some really nice scale Cub gear for 1/6 - 1/3 sized planes. I just can't find any info that lists how wide the fuselage is to know if any of the aftermarket gear setups will fit.

Thanks for the post and the pics. The plane really looks good. I think I'll have to order mine this weekend.

Im glad you guys like it, its really easy to fly all the one wheel landings were done on the second fligth , thats how comfortable I was with it.

CENETIX

The wing struts are wood covered in film, the fuse is 5 1/4" at the wides point
Use one CH per wing control surface, that way you can use crow/airbrake and mix ailerons down with flaps and about 10 deg of down elevetor.Dont forget to order a 12 oz round sullivan fuel tank.
This plane is way over power with the 91, I think a 56-70 4 stroke is plenty.
If you are going whit a 2 stroke you WILL need a pits muffler, the stock mufler will not clear the firewall.

If you guys need specific pictures LMK.

Could you do me a favor and get the measurements of the cowling. I need a Super Cub cowling for a Thunder Tiger Cub that I'm modifying. I've tried all the other Super Cub cowlings and they're either to big or to small.

Thanks,
Michael

Thank you! I'll have to dig up my old posts to look at the dimension I need. I'm basically taking a J-3 Cub and by adding a cowling you get something that looks like a PA-11 Cub Special. A J-3 with a enclosed engine with more horse power, I think they were 85hp.

It's nice to see something other than the standard yellow cub. Thanks for sharing your view on the Super Cub. I might have to get one. I'm in the process of building the KMP Aviat Husky A1-B. I'll be posting a build thread later, when I get more done.

Also, if you got a $100.00 burning a hole in your pocket, check out the www.piperj3gear.com/ . I bought one for my cub, very nice and worth every penny!

I too have been searching for a post or something on this plane. I've had it for a few weeks and it is on the table now. I wanted mine for slow lazy flying. Lots of flap down touch and goes. I am using an E-Flight Power 46 and 4cell 3200 lipo. I have tested this with a Master Airscrew simitar 13x6. It turns at 9500rpm drawing only 38 amps max. This is about what my saito 72 turns with the same prop so it should be fine for what I want. I have the recommended 13x8E on order to try out. I hope more people join in I would like to hear more about other experiences with this plane. The only hit I see for electric flight is the wing has to come off to change the battery. A hatch of some kind would have been nice but I'm ok with it anyway. Happy flying.

I know what you mean about the batt, maybe if you leave the second windows off you migth be able to take the batt out.
Also use seperate CH for each flap and aileron that whay you can mix in ailerons down with flaps and you will float for ever and with some head wind you can almost take off like an elevator, strigth up. [ 8D ]

Default RE: Modeltech Super Cub

Since my first Ultra Stick I use the sailplane mode for planes with flaps. I like the control of setting each servo. I hadn't thought of the aileron down mix. I will try it after a few flights. This could be the best floater I have had. Right now the battery tray is installed and I have tried changing batteries with the wing on. Not so good. I really don't mind removing the wing . I saw this from the start. It would be much easier to install the saito 72 and be done with it but I am getting started with electrics and enjoy the "new gadget" aspect. My others are E-flite AT-6 and Great Planes Cherokee. To add to the fun I want the struts installed. I think I will attach the struts to the wing with small hinges so when I remove the wing I only have to remove the screws to the fuse. Any suggestions would be welcome.

The wing struts are a pain to remove with the screws suplied so what I did was use some tumb screws. I use them to hold my helis's canopies and they work great and makes it a bit easier to remove the struts and if you need longer screws you can swap them out.

Well the epoxy has set and the tail feathers are hinged. Now on with the assembly. I have all weekend to finish up. I go kinda slow. Regarding the canopy screws, are they 3mm? I didn't see thread size on the page. Also thanks for the tips. The weather is crazy this time of year in Oklahoma so I don't know when the first flight will be. I don't really want the maiden voyage in 20 to 30 gusting to tornado.

I have an OS 55AX 2 stroke engine. Do you think this engine would work well with this Cub?

I just got back from flying and I put about (7) 10 min fligths , I do have a video that Ill put up later tonigth.

WESLEYK

If you are going to se the canopy screws to hold the two wings spar bolts together you will need to get longer M3 screws.

I found that the tail gear set up is crap [:@], after each landing the wheel would turn all the way so I would have to go out and
reposition the tail wheel, I think if you change that wheel collar that secures the wire to the tail bracket it should hold.

EKIR

The 55 will work just fine but if you use any 2 stroke engine it will required a pitts muffler.

I have been looking at that tail wheel all day while setting up. Your comment settles it. I don't really like the wheel hooked directly to the rudder/servo. I normally use a Sullivan setup but I didn't have one on hand. I will be replacing it next week. I have had good luck if I go one size up from the rating on the package. I am also replacing all pushrods because I prefer z- bends over the supplied 90 degree clips. This is just what I do. I have never had a z-bend fail. The canopy screws look like the way to go. There is a shop close by that has a lot of heli stuff. I'll check there before ordering.

Great video! STOL for sure. I'm not clear on how that Dubro tailwheel assembly sets up. Could you share a pic or two once you've installed it on your cub?

Thanks,

Here a is a pic of the tail set up, this was installed wrong, the triangle pasltic part goes on the leading edge of the rudder and the
wheel should be back more so the springs go forward towards the rudder hinge line

Thanks for the pics. Not being familiar with that it just looks complicated. I'll have to pay attention to one next time I see one at the field.
