Default RE: RC Universe abreviations, terms and acronyms list

Hi Jackal575,

I did a post to RCU and asked what it meant. It means:
To The Top example: put an item to the top a list, email or post

I've added it to the list and will be posting a new list sometime later this week.

Thanks for the input.

Hi Wayne:

Minor nitpick: mah is milliamps TIMES hours, not per hour. Measures total charge. eg, a 1000 mah battery can deliver 1000 milliamps (or one amp) of current for a total ONE hour. A 2000 mah battery can deliver 1000 milliamps current for TWO hours.

Hi Roger,

Thanks for your input. Any input and help is greatly appreciated.

I understand your description in terms of battery output, but I also want to make sure it is clear for battery charging (input). Let me try and think of a way that I can describe it clearly for both situations.

In the meantime, if you can come up with a one liner description, that will satisfy both situations and also be clear for beginners, please let me know.

Thanks,

Wayne Miller

Hi Wayne:

Exactly the same for charging: 1000 ma (note ma, not mah!) charge rate for 1 hour = 1000mah stored charge, assuming the battery capacity is great enough to store that much charge. 1000 ma current for two hours into a 3000 mah battery means 2000 mah of stored charge, or the battery is 2/3 rds charged. This assumes an ideal battery, no losses to heat, which always occurs. Easiest way to say for both is "milliamps of current multiplied by the time it flows, measured in hours".

Hi Roger,

Thanks for the info, now the challenge is to get a short form of it all on one line for the list.

By the way, I understand that it takes (1.6 ma x C) into the battery to fully charge a NiCd or NiMh. This assumes the battery is not partially charged.

Example: A 1000 mah battery needs to be charged at 1000 mah for 1.6 hours, or a 1000 mah battery needs to be charged at 1600 mah for 1 hr. to obtain full charge.

Can you confirm the above?

Thanks for your help.

Hi Wayne:

I think the example you give is accurate for nicads. Certainly what we have all done for years with them with our wall wart chargers. Do not know whether it is also true for other battery technologies. You might ask Red for his thoughts. BTW, I was really pleased to find your list of acronyms.

Hi Roger,

Thanks for the information. I appreciate your comments regarding the list, it is great to know people are finding it useful. I'll be posting the updated list this week end.

I notice your from Colorado Springs. I used to travel and I enjoyed your part of the country, and at one time flew at the Black Forest Flying Club across from the Air Force Academy (I'm not sure the club is still there), and also visited the Cave of the Winds and the pottery factory, infact I have purchased pottery from there.

I originally learned to fly RC in Denver at Lowery from Lloyd Nicholson back in the late 60's and I've only been back to ski since then.

Thanks again for your input.

Fly4Fun,

Wayne

I like this list but it doesn't contain "How to make a post"
I've been reading the board and want to creat a new post. I'm stuck in making replies to posts. Any help?

Hi,

This is off topic for this post, but I'm fairly new myself and I know how frustrationg it can be. I'll try and help if I can.

I would first visit the FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) found at the top, this has lots of information regarding posts, you should read this, it has lots of useful information.

Basically, to make a new post you have to go to that forum, then go to the top of the page and start searching down the left side of the page - there is a box stating "NEW POST", click on it and your off and running.

To get to the forum, you can either search the forum from the list at the opening page of RCU. As an alternative you can find an existing post in the forum that you want and click on the name of the forum, this is right beside the name of the post. Then click on "NEW POST".

Another hint. If you want to go to the last page of a post, click on the arrow at the right hand side of the title of any post listed.

Hope this helps.

Hey Wayne, why not use the edit function to update the lists? Then you can delete the previous lists and shorten the thread.

Hi Doug,

That's a great idea! I was thinking the same thing, but didn't know it could be done. Could you send me a private email and explain how I can do this.

Thanks for your help.

Hey, just thought of the full-scale jet term FOD...Foreign object damage. When you suck up stuff from the runway and trash something important...

Hi Doug,

Thanks for the addition, I've also heard of it as Foriegn Object Debris, so I've added both. I should be putting out a new list later this week.

Editing this was a really good suggestion, it would make it easier for us to browse the list.
Wayne, this list is awesome. I feel less Newb-ish after reading through it.

Thanks, and keep up the good work!

MAC - Mean Aerodynamic Chord (I think this is the center of gravity/balance point?)
The center of gravitiy CG is not the same as MAC but it is usually located between 25 and 33% of the main wing's MAC.

More acronyms:
STOL - Short Take Off and Landing
PCM - Pulse Code Modulation
EMC - Electromagnetic Compliant

I don't know how it is in the US, but the electric designations here in yurope are:
Power: P - unit: W (watt)
Current: I - unit: A (ampere)
Voltage: U - unit: V (volt)
Resistance: R - unit: W (ohm)
Energy: E - unit: j (joule)
Frequency: f - unit: Hz (hertz)
Period: T - unit: s (seconds)

Hi Adam_One,

Thanks for the input, I've added the terms. After adding them I realized I had to define the items that described the terms. This started to get complicated. I hope I've kept it simple enough for a beginner to understand.

I'll publish the new list later this week. If you see something that could be made simpler, or clearer, please let me know.

By the way, I'm having a hard time finding Yurope on the map

Hi Wayne,
I really can't blame you for that, as Yurope is quite a new country and not all maps have been updated yet…

As for the electrical units I've shown, maybe you don't need to include them all on the list.
I've just noticed that you use the letter E as designation for voltage, while we use the letter U here, but that's not a big deal as the units are the same anyway.

And suddenly I just thought about another acronym:
AC - Aerodynamic Center of the wing.

Cheers,
adam

Hi Wayne,

I've checked your changes and they look quite good to me.
It's a good idea to edit your last published list instead of posting a new one.
In case you don't know how: you just have to sign in and then click on "EDIT" text shown on the lower margin of your posted list beside the word "REPLY".

Cheers,
adam

Hi Adam,

I think I'm going to have to do something since the post is getting so long. I originally thought it was a good idea to keep the information in the post so everyone would have a history of all comments and understand the changes, but then again, I thought it would be finished after a couple of posts

Also, typically when your notified of a change to a post via email, and you click on it and takes you to the last post, if I edit the first post, people will have to be notified to go to the first post.

I'll need to discuss this with the forum moderator to see what can be done.

This has becoome a much larger project than I first thought it would be!

I'm like keeping it up and the cooperation I'm getting from all the modelers - I hoping everyone is finding it useful.

Got your email, thanks for your changes.

Wayne
