So while filling my tank i heard a small pop. Pulled the tanks to check them out and the baffle in the main tank has come loose on the bottom (flat part). The baffle is secured on the sides and top of the tank still. Anyone else having this issue? Should I replace the tank or leave it as is? I dont think the baffle is going anywhere. Anyone use the jet tech fuel cells, maybe they are more rigid?

Thanks

parker

So you just removed the baffle? Any issues or changes in flight performance?

No problem after 4 flights also my HOTSPOT used the same type of tank,,but doesn't have any baffle built-in . In fact my ultra flash was the first ive seen to use a baffle, not sure it make sense

My Opinion

What flow rate are you filling at! I have only seen them pop when either people leave a plug in and start filling or they are filling at a high rate.
The baffle is needed to give the clunk a good chance to pick up fuel in a long thin tank and you would notice fuel slopping around more in the UF IMO.

Dave,
I was using my friends Jersey modeler can to fill up. Not sure what his voltage was at. I was out of town flying. I was trying to fill for a second, then stop, fill then stop so on and so on. Worked for the first couple fill ups but guess i over did it on one. Mine is at apprx. 7 volts and still is a little tough on the tanks. Ive ordered a speed controller Im going to try and modify to my Fisher fuel can to slow the rate even more. I pulled the stopper on my fuel tank and made a hook to give the baffle a tug. Only the bottom has separated. Still attached everywhere else. Do you see a problem with using it as is?

Out of curiosity,

What fuel cans/voltages are others using to fill the ultra flash?

I had the same thing happen filling on 7.4v battery source. Turns out, the main tank fills fine but when it starts to fill the wing, then pressure builds in the main tank. I have checked for fuel line kinks, etc., and the vent is okay. So, now when the wing starts to fill I turn the pump off and on as I feel the main tank swell with pressure.
Regards,
Gus

yup that is exactly what I have noticed. The main is fine until the wing starts to fill. Well hopefully i can get my speed control to work on my pump if not Ill just order the evojet fill can from sin city which has a speed control built in to it.

mtnflyr,

Did you just leave your baffle as is or replace the tank? Any issues?

The baffle is not broken completely loose; as far as I can tell, just from one side so I left it alone.

I have the Jersey Modeler 9.6v refueler that would seriously overpressure the flash tank system (I have main and saddles). So I took the 9.6v battery apart and rewired it to a 4.8v 4s2p setup.

It takes about 3 or 4 good minutes to fill but I do not have to worry about over pressure at this voltage.

Usual, the Jersey is not normally that fast! I use an Orbit station with a 3s Li-Po that will do 2ltrs a minute. I almost never turn it up full, but I have had it pumping.
What tube do you guys have between the tanks? 6mm clear provided?
What overflow tube size?
If its just the bottom popped, then yes I think it will be fine as the curved top will stay as its not likely to flex, the flat bottom which arches as it fills will be free to move now

Ive got 6mm between the tanks and also on the vent. Is the orbit station similar to the evojet with the speed control?

Yes, sorry Orbit is the old company name, I mean EvoJet. The variable rate is a must for all the different models I have

Tanks:
i am running the saddle tanks in my flash for additional fuel , and the wing tank for smoke
had a friend check my setup, as this is my first turbine , and he told me that the yellow tygon gets so soft that i need to have brass tubing inserted into the tygon to avoid it folding back and creating fuel starvation
so question is :
1 how long of a tubing is recomended in the main tank - i have brass tubing in the middle to avoid the baffle cuttimng the tubing , but directly after the baffle i have only tygon
2 saddle tanks - do i need to insert brass tubing in between the stopper and clunk to "harden the tubing" avoid it folding back

thanks

Izzy

No!

Leave the main tank as it is, 100,000 flights prove it!
The saddles are also fine with just Tygon. They are long and thin, so they would need a big force on the clunk to get it 180 degrees.
Even my coke bottle tanks have just tygon. My Lightning etc etc

Dave hi
thanks for the quick reply
regarding the main tank , i understand
regarding the saddles, the instructions called to remove the felt filter if using them as additional fuel tanks
i replaced the clunks for dubro heavy clunks , an the fall and fold when i put the plane on its nose - so i really do appreciate your comments ,and am definitely learning fromn this forum and am thankful for advise

do i - 1 replace clunks back to original without felt filter , or keep the heavy clunk - - i understand that from what you recomend , not to add brass sleeve to the tygon inside the saddles

thanks again
izzy

there is a jet meet next friday , hope to maiden by then .....

I also heard a pop when filling my UF for the first time with the Kavan pump on 3S lipo just at the point where the main tank fills and fuel starts to flow through the felt clunk in the wing tank. I used an old brushed speed controller and very cheap servo tester off ebay to make a variable speed setup. I now fill at full speed until until the main tank is nearly full and then reduce to around half throttle to complete the fill.

No problems since.

All my experience with tygon says that even when it curves back it does not pinch-it has strong side walls. I would leave it as you have them and I would not expect a problem.

Enjoy the test flights, its a brilliant aeroplane
