RE: AMR 33% Waco YMF-5 Build
Oh noooooo. Why did they have to change something that was so good!Sorry that you have to deal with this Anthony. I would give you my left over tapes for your project but it's not the right scale for you. Can you make some stitches like you did on your 1/4 scale Cub to replicate what you already put down?

VJ,
I have enough 1" spaced 1/3 scale stitches to complete the Waco. I ordered 5/8" spaced to stitch inside the prop wash area. I will just complete the Waco with the 1" spaced stitches.
As a buddy of mine says about scale detail, 90% of the people who look at it will not appreciate all the work that went into it and 95% will not know if it is corerct or not. Probably 98% of the people will not notice the stitch spacing being incorrect.
I did send Scale Rib Stitch an e-mail explaining why I no longer like or will be purchasing their tapes. He has made these tapes for doping cloth tapes over them based off of the e-mail I received from him.

I managed to finish the stitching and tapes on one wing panel last night. Taking the night off to spend with the better half.
This weekend will be another marathon run to knock out as much as possible. Will take a break to watch a little NASCAR on Saturday

Nascar? Nascar? Get that Waco done and you can go and watch it go in circles!
But we all do need to take a break every now and then. I think I'll take one tomorrow.
Let's see that wing please?

Back to work on the Waco,
Started feeling sick yesterday and don't feel very well today but work must go on. I have 2 wing panels all taped and ready for polycrylic. I will finish aplplying the stitches and tapes to the other 2 panels today. Once these are out of the way I will go back to work on the aileron's.
Will post some pics later.

Still feel like crap but work continues.
I have the wing stitching and tapes completed. Pretty much worked non-stop from 8am to 8pm yesterday on the wings. Not difficult just a time consuming process.
I will work on applying the stitching and tapes to the tail surfaces today. I am attaching a few pics of the wings, could only fit 3 of the panels on the table. You can see in the pics how the perimeter tapes overlap onto the rib tapes.

Great shots of your work Anthony.Your stitches really stand proud from thesurface compared to mine. I wish that we were still able to get the old kindof stitches from Ken...Looks super. Stay warm and drink plentyof fluids!

Thanks VJ,
As far as I am concerened the older stitches are a superior product. You could make the stitch proud to the surface or more hidden depending on how you applied. Now the new stitches don't leave much of an option.

Look's great Anthony. I am one for thinking our details should be more pronounced than hidden. Why else do them it they can't be seen.
And that table give's an idea of just how big those wing's are.

Thanks Robert,
Yeah there is alot of wing area on this plane. The thing still makes me go WOW when it is all together. One big hunk of airplane
I have the rudder and stabs completed. Still have the fin and elevators to go. Will be glad when this job is completed.

I have all the tail feather completed except the fin.
Getting the perimeter tapes down around the curved areas is a bit tricky. I tacked one end down with the trim iron then stretched it around the perimeter as much as possible then tacked the other end in place. I then ran the iron over the perimeter in the center of the tape to secure it along the center and then gradually shrunk each side with a heat gun until it almost layed flat to the surface then finished up sealing it down with the iron.
Turned out pretty good. Will do the fin then start applying Polycrylic to all the flying surfaces.

Anthony,
Are the perimeter tapes cut on the bias (45°) to the weave? (can't tell from the photos) It will make the application easier. When you tack down one end and start to stretch it around the curve, the sides will almost wrap themselves to the edge. Thats how the full scale guys do it.

Hi John,
No the tapes I am using are from Pink-It and they are cut from Solartex. You have to rely on shrinkage to get the around curves.
You can't get cloth tapes in the sizes we need for the models and the tapes that are available have full scale pimked edges, at least the ones I found.
Bias cut tapes would make the job easier if available.

I had the same trouble getting the tape to lay down around tight radius'. Looks like it came out well. You're almost done. Stitching/tapeing is one of those things that is fun for the first few hours then you hit the wall and you wish you were done!

I have 2 pieces of perimeter tape to put on the fin and it will be complete. The Waco used appox. 400ft of tape between both sizes. That is alot of ironing.

RE: AMR 33% Waco YMF-5 Build
Anthony, I'm kind of a Waconut myself, I just started on my AMR 33% Waco today and I thank you for posting the build, because there are a lot of tips and tricks that I may find useful. When I opened the boxes and started to unpack I swore I had enough material to build a C-47 and a Waco..............Very intimidating.
You do beautiful work, you should be very proud of the craftsmanship that you have displayed.
Thank you again, Ron

Tapes are done
I started working on the aileron's, they were pretty rough after stripping the paint and removing the plastic for the corrugations. I sanded them down as smooth as I could get and gave them a shot of high fill primer and sanded again. The low spots have been filled with spot putty and I will let that dry until tomorrow. The corrugations will be about as mind numbing as the tapes.

Hi Ron,
Don't let all that wood intimidate you, the wood stock goes down pretty quick once the building starts. I remember when I first unpacked mine I about had a heart atatck, looked like a hobby shop was unpacked in my hobby room.
If you have any questions don't hesitate to ask and I will try to help.

RE: AMR 33% Waco YMF-5 Build
Thanks Anthony, Your build has a lot of great info.
I can't wait to get mine finished, I just completed a 1/3 scale sopwith pup and I thought I would start on the WACO while I'm in my building mode.Ha!Ha!
I know about taping I had to do my pup twice, I had it all taped up to dope the next day and the temperature dropped from 80 to 34 degrees overnight and the tape separated from the adhesive, what a mess, anyway I got it re taped and doped.

RE: AMR 33% Waco YMF-5 Build
Ron, I would suggest doing a very good parts inventory, and calling AMR tomorrow if you are missing any parts. I have been waiting on the stab tube since I got the kit ( last year) and about a month for some items that were left out of a wing kit that I had to order because I goofed on one panel. I have been held up finishing this model for a while now.

RE: AMR 33% Waco YMF-5 Build
The build is pretty straight forward. Building the wings takes a bit of patience, there are lot of parts that go into the wings but the supplied jigs really do a nice job of keeping everything straight. Seems like you are building wings forever
If you go back to the beginning of the thread you will see I modified the tip ribs(last 3 I beleive) I removed a little from the bottom of each rib. The taper of the wing thickness was off a little. Don't know if you want to tackle that or not?
Also if I were to do it all over again I would use 1/4" wide cap strips on the wing ribs. 3/8 is too wide IMO. I think 1/4" would look better.
I also added lightening holes in the tail surfaces. Even with doing this I had to add several pounds of weight to the nose. I guess it all depends on how much detail you add to the plane. More detail= more weight.
Enjoy the build!!

RE: AMR 33% Waco YMF-5 Build
Scott, I was missing the tail wheel assembly and gave AMR a call, I had it within three days, are you sure they received your request.?
I placed an order with Mick Reeves and after three weeks realized that my e-mail did not send the request to him, so I resent it and received my order within 10 days.
I am doing the inventory now as you suggested, WOW! there are a lot of parts.
Anthony, I plan on drilling the tail surfaces like you did, I am thinking about the ribs, I did read what you did, great attention to detail, most people will never see the difference but you know that it is correct.
I know what you mean by looking correct, the tape on my pup figured out to be 3/4 of an inch but didn't look right so I ended up cutting all the tape to 5/8.
Thank you for those tips, I will definitely use them........................Ron
I am using a Moki 215 That should help on the nose weight...Ha!Ha!
