RE: GROUP BUILD - Top Flite Giant Scale F4U Corsair
You guys are too kind. Really it wasn't that tough, though I have to admit I was a little surprised that it slides just about exactly like I wanted it to. I think the two magnets will work good. It's pretty darn firm when it's in the closed position. Test will be if it stands up to vibration. If it can do that, I'm not worried about it in flight. The seam will be pretty nice when it's finished. I may have a little Evercoat fill of just tiny bits on the seam but not much. It's pretty much where it needs to be now.
Bob, it's just a manual slide. I cringed at the idea of a cleanly working servo or air operated one. I'll be doing that on the Hellcat, but the arrangements much better for the rails so alot easier.

I blush.....Hey gents, I finally got the process burned in to a DVD....it's about 30 minutes long for about 3 minutes of stuff, and I'm not Ken Burns by any means in video production. However, I burned a few copies for you guys.
Bob: PM me with your addy and I'll send you one today.
Dave: Can't find your addy around here, and would like to send you out a copy with a template of the gear doors, can you PM me with it??

RE: GROUP BUILD - Top Flite Giant Scale F4U Corsair
Finally got the cowl on yesterday. Here's some shots of that. Disappointing about the plug cap, but that's the only cut but for about 1/4" shaved off the back of the bottom fins. The cowl is just slightly oversive, but from preference, I wanted the bottom as it is in the pics, with the ability to blow some air through the back. Engine sure is a tidy fit in there though. If it powers the plane like I think it will, I'll be as happy as flies on stink.

Every things look great, but I do have a concern, Did you round off the fire wall to ease the air flow to and thrugh the cowl flaps??? This is one of corsairjocks mods. On my first bird I dodn't have any heating problems, but the cowl got realy warm right at the base of the cowl flaps so this time I rounded the firewall with about a 3/4 radious. I think back some ware in this thread I posted some pic to show same. A roule I have allways tryed to follow when cowling an engine is " For every 1sq inch of inlet area, allow 11/2 sq in of outlet area" and I assume you are going to have a dummy engine. If you han't read corsairjocks thread on mods I recomend it, pick out the ones you can handle and use and have fun.
Enough of this old mans dribble, You are doung a great job.

RE: GROUP BUILD - Top Flite Giant Scale F4U Corsair
Bob, I've seen a few different ways to do this, probably the best job I've seen was on a smaller one we finished for another pal, using several rings to taper down the firewall behind the cowl at the flaps. Not sure how I'll figure it out yet. May just drill some holes over the engine head and open the flaps at the bottom and make sure the dummy radial has proper cooling inlet area to accommodate the setup. I bought the plane already framed with the firewall on and to go back and mod it now to taper it down would be a heck of a lot more work than I'm willing to put in on it. If there's any cooling problems after I do that stuff, I'll cut the cowl over the engine if I have to and solve the problem. My main thing was that it wasn't hanging out the bottom. I don't mind a hole as long as you've still got to flip it over to see the engine.

Well I just dropped about $1000.00 for all of my retracts and radio equipment. I have been slow going on my plane because I was very close to needing the servos. Now I have no excuse, I just need to GIT R DUN.

I hope you got at 60 oz plus servos for the control surfaces and a coupla of 80 oz for the flaps as you will need them, But you left us in the dark on brands.
its great youve got your gear and now it will be easy to make progress.
I know I bore you guys, with my weather woes, but three weather men now say it going to get warm next week so mabe ALL of the snow and snert will be gone. Mabe if eaven get in a flight or two with a hand laundh combat S.P.A.D. have to get the thumbs working

RE: GROUP BUILD - Top Flite Giant Scale F4U Corsair
Sorry I left you guys in the dark. A buddy GAVE me some hi tech servos, I can't remember the number but they are hi torq digitals and have 115 oz. He gave me 4, so I ordered 3 hi torq Futabas, They had 79 oz. How far did you guys mount the engine from the mounting box? Does it matter a whole lot, can I move the cowl forward and back if I need to?In the plans they use a US 41 and the front of the back plate is 6 3/4 inches from the engine box, mine is coming out almost an inch closer. I can easily move it out some, but I was wondering what you all did. I am putting a G62 on it. Does this make any sense to you guys?

Sounds like you have your servo requirements well in hand, As for mounting a G62 I would suggest the cup mount onto a a/c ply plate and then soft mount to the f/w and box, MY reasoning for the soft mount is that it is just enough dampen the vib's to make it so you don't shake the bird abart. a 62 does shame a little even with hand ballanced props. back in the early part of this thread I think I posted pic of my install. If not and you would like some pic give me your reg E-Mail addy and I will send what I have, they might help.
what cowl are you using?

I would like to see what you did. [email protected] is my email. I put hard rubber mounts between the engine plate and front of the engine box. Does it matter how far it is from the front of the box? I am using the cowl that came with it, the one you have to glue together.

Cliff, For the G62, you'll need 2" almost exactly between the motor and the firewall. You can go back in the thread to see some shots of how all of us have done our installs. IMHO, you should dump that stock cowl and get a good aftermarket glass one with open flaps. Not a real killer for expense.
