RE: GROUP BUILD - Top Flite Giant Scale F4U Corsair
Thanks Bob,
Actually I was thinking of adding a 1/64 plywood skin over the inside of the doors with some detail painted on when I finish out the wing. I have some scrap fiberglass strips layed up inside the door to glue this to to add to the doors thickness.

Sam,
Thanks for the pic. I had bought some 1/8" Evergreen Metal Siding Styrene Plastic to detail the bays with and it looks like it will be a good fit.

Well,
The linkage is figured out and it works well. I have somewhat copied the linkage used by pappy883.

Hey Goose,
A single servo is going to operate both the left and right doors. They will be sequenced using Oregon Scale Aviation's [link=http://www.oregonscaleaviation.com]Micro Gear Sequencer [/link].
A short video of the work in progress can be seen here [link=http://rcuvideos.com/video/TF-Giant-Corsair-Main-Gear-Door]Operating Left Gear Doors.[/link]

That system looks great[sm=thumbs_up.gif].
But I had about 10 flights on my bird when the snap on ball covers started poping off, not sure why as there was no strain so to speck, so I have changed mine out with captive type 2/56 I only have 3 flights on these but they seamed to have less slop
Just a thought
Cheers Bob T

Looking great Sam. I wish I had modified my tailwheel more scale as well. It does not provide much clearance with the doors down.

RE: GROUP BUILD - Top Flite Giant Scale F4U Corsair
I'm making some progress on my F4U-5N but the offset on the engine seems drastic. Plus the right side of the crutch doesn't line up with the plan even. It's about 1/8" to 3/16" short and I trimmed it where it lines up with the crutch top as per the insrtuctions. Did anybody change this so it was less of an offset than the plans show. It seems to me that the prop shaft will be way off center of the cowl this way. I'm thinking of modifying it by adding back to the right side and then using a thicker piece of plywood for the firewall as I don't think the 1/4" is thick enough. Can anybody tell me what they did with their offset? Also those that have flown theirs is the 1/4" firewall enough? I started looking back in the thread but after an hour gave up. Heres what I've got done so far on mine. I hope to catch up to some of you by Thanksgiving.

NCIS..I kept the plan offset and it looks ok......however I replaced the 1/4 inch fire wall with a 1/2 inch one.

I have more questions. Why install the cockpit floor up high and then have to cut it out later to put in the full cockpit? Does anybody have any ideas on this? How did you do it? It seems redundant to put something in to only go through the pain of removing it later.

NCIS..If I remember the plans said that if you intend to put a full cockpit you can omit the floor...I built mine and did not put in the floor , it made no difference in the constructon by leaving out the floor.

Got the tailwheel mounted. Had to do some surgery to the fuse formers and upper tailwheel mount. All in all I think it will work great.

No problem with running two rx's, it's done all the time with GS aerobats albeit more for power distibution than redundancy.
For various reasons, I suggest you make them identical rx's and pay attention to your power system.
You don't say whether you're planning on using a Futaba FASST system or Spektrum/JR DSM2? I can help with the latter, but I'm not too well versed on the former...

I did some more work on the new tailwheel, since I was not happy with the height of the post. First pic is the plane I'm modeling, second is the orginal Robart retract, third is the first tailwheel unit I made, last few are the new one. I can hardly wait to see this baby taxiing!

Wow sam,
That tailwheel looks awesome! I am definitely going to take a look at the work involved in retrofitting mine now.
