Hi all
Great to see all of your great work[sm=thumbs_up.gif][sm=thumbs_up.gif]
But I ran into a strange problem in checking out my air system on my 47, could not get air into the air tank and after checking individule componets found 2 of the brass Robart T's that were plugged, using my shop compresser at 150 psi they would not pass air so check them befor you get them burried
Cheers Bob T

RE: GROUP BUILD - Top Flite Giant Scale F4U Corsair
Guys
Thanks for the kind words. Coming from craftsmen of your caliber, those words mean a lot! This was the first time I saw my plane on its wheels including the tail wheel. I have to say I'm disappointed with the look of it. I've been tinkering with making several tailwheels from Luke's build, as my son and I are building the 1/6 Scale Corsair group build. After seeing the the assembled Corsair today, I just may try to adapt the Aune-Zollner design to fit the same mounting base as the Robart. I mean, take a look at the tailwheel below and tell me I'm crazy! The first pic is of the plane I'm modeling, and the second is Luke's tailwheel, modded for the shorter post. I'll lengthen mine to sort of resemble the full scale.

Cimara, My Mustang is a Top-flight/ G-62.
Sam, I lenghtened my tail wheel too. I have it out of the plane right now. I will try to post a picture this afternoon when I wake up.. It's not "Luke scale" But it does have a nice sporty scale look to it.

Thanks Chris. One more thing about the Smartfly Battshare is, you can't bind a 2.4 radio thru them.
My Mustang turned 3 years old in Oct. The finish is Rustoleum "metallic finish" Then brushed with steel wool.
Last time I posted a picture of my Mustang in the Corsair thread, I got fussed out. (page 30 by Wolf190)
Being we are discussing finish, the TYPE plane is irrelavent.( OK I'm covered now)
WARNING, YOU ARE ABOUT TO SEE A P-51 MUSTANG!!

LOL Kelly. As a fellow "C-Bro", we gotta give ya the nod given how awesome the Mustang looks. Bodes well for the thread and the Corsairs. Cheers.

Sam, Here is my modified tail wheel. It is a standard Robart. I used 1/16th aluminum strips to make the frame work. The longer shaft was machined in my lathe. The bolts in the shaft are threaded and don't pass thru. That was the hardest part of the mod. and that wasn't to bad.

Surething Mike. I've gotton more compliment on that Mustang than any plane I've ever owned or built.
I was very upset when I saw the disasterous paint results. So I just cleaned up the masking marks and just let the pulled up white and Blue ride. (At least it was silver under it) I wanted a perfect paint job and every time I went in the shop and looked at it I got madder. You couldn't even touch the plane with out getting marks on it.
After a week or so I decided to try and salvage the paint job. I noticed that the silver had finnally hardened to where you could handle it. So I dicided to make is look worse. (go for a war look rather than a show look).
I was still a little unsure about what my buddies would think of my "BAD" paint job. They all build beautiful museum looking warplanes. They loved it! The older it gets, the better it looks. I've never cleaned my P-51 either. I'm scared the paint will rub off! (and it has in one spot )
When somebody calls my plane a "masterpiece" I just tell them "Thanks, it easy to do it with CHEAP paint.
If there's anything I've learned about myself in the years of model building is "I ain"t no painter!!" So I build war weary planes now
Later,
Kelly

LOL Kelly. I hear ya on the silver paint. I got to sand off an entire CompArf Mustang we did in buffing metalizer paints that wouldn't grip to the surface when the stencils got lifted off....NOT fun. I learned my lesson on what to use for proper silver effects after that. []...but yeah, I do the same thing....weather it up!!! Nice looking tailwheel there.

Wolf & T-bolt
In my quest to save weight on my P-47 I found a latex silver by Behr paints that seams to work great, and talking to a paint engineer latwx by its nature is one of the lightes paints on the market if you are cheeeep. it does not mark after about 20 min but you do have to let dry out all of the water ( I thined it with iso-alke I think 80%) you have to put it on in light coats first 2, then a wet coat just so it does not run after about a week it will sand with 220 ware you are going to add color and buffs with med woll, But then my bird only has to make me happy as it will never see a judges table, and there is only one outher warbird nut in our small club.
Smallest is a Qt@ 25$. I think I used about 4 oz. If any one wants to try I would be glad to send just for the shipping

RE: GROUP BUILD - Top Flite Giant Scale F4U Corsair
Tidied up the plumbing then pressurized and checked operation. Found one bad Tee and replaced it. Holding pressure great now. Can get about 5 cycles of the gear on 100 psi.
Locking pins engage and disengage smoothly. Next couple of days will be mounting the main gear doors and then sequencing them with the retracts with the MGUltra from OSA and linking it up to the failsafe.

RE: GROUP BUILD - Top Flite Giant Scale F4U Corsair
I went and did it. I ordered the TF Giant GE F4U Corsair even though I'm building it's big brother the 1/4 scale. I have been following this thread for as long as I can remember and started to do so when I had the kit and sold it to get the larger 1/4 scale Corsair. I still have the G-62, a pilot, and the aluminum wheels so I won't have to re-purchase them. I think I'll be going with Seirra retracts instead of the Robarts if they continue to have their backorder problem. Mine will also be modeled after Lt. Ike Kepford's #29 of VF 17. I don't know just yet how far I'll take it with the details but it won't be plain. I'm still building the 1/4 scale but sometimes you just need a change of scenery or at least I get sloppy. I like the rough construction more than the detailing and that is one main reason for getting the kit. Plus it will have instructions and PICTURES. I miss that with Don Smith's Corsair. Anyway I'll tag along and show you how I'm doing. It should be here tomorrow and I'll get started on it very soon.

To All,
You know I was thinking on doing a different subject after I had maidened this present bird, but when this medical problem came along I knew that it would not fly till '09,(spring)and I'm still holding to that. but all in all I must say that I really did enjoy building & finishing it to present stages, I just might have to go out and order up another TOP FLITE CORSAIR

I making a little progress on the fuselage by building the tail feathers first. Here is the plane I'm modeling it after. I picked this one because it was the year I was born.

Hi All
Well been flying my bird and it flys sweet, One problem on last flight lost an elev/servo about 2 to 3 secounds from tuch down, so it droped hard on the right gear first, broke the axle took the gear out of the wing etc etc etc did not have the camera along so no pic's.
Post mortem we found the servo arm off the servo and the screw in the fuss, assumption is I did not have it tight.
Damage
Fuss miner some stress cracks, so will pull some covering.
Tail group Rudder and fin cracked rudder stress cracks in the fin
Wing ??? right gear rails mabe gear door rib on the out side, will most likely pull all wing covering just to check the skinn, etc,etc
It is in the repair shop and will fly again
Cheers Bob T

RE: GROUP BUILD - Top Flite Giant Scale F4U Corsair
Well, got the gear doors mounted on the right wing. Things were tight near the fold line...not much space for those big Robart offset hinges but they just fit. The thought of having to repeat the whole process for the other wing made me decide to call it quits for this evening. Left wing over the next couple of days and then to hook up the linkage. I am going to have a single servo in the middle of the wing open both doors.
Later,
Chris

Could you post a pic of the front gear door strut attachment as the door is halfway closed? I've been wondering how to do it, and yours looks great.
Thanks

Hi Sam,
I used some brass to make a collar for the strut and a 2-56 ball link sliding inside a piece of 1/8 aluminum tubing. The standoff is some lite plywood.

Hey guys anyone flying their corsair...I took mine out today haven't flown it in a while and I forgot just how great a performer this plane is !!! I am taking it to Pensacola Fl. the first weekend of October to the Naval Air Base the local clubs are having a RALLY OF EAGLES the Navy is graciously letting us use their runway that weekend to fly..the same runway where many Corsair pilots trained during WWII .. should be fun...

Perfect! Thanks SO much. Now all I need to do is to find some free time to work on it. My kids have so much homework that I feel like their teacher is giving ME homework!
