Hey Guys just checking back in here. I have had a lot of questions lately about canopies and spinners for the CMP Me 109. Just thought I would say That I no longer carry spinners for this plane. They best replacement I found is the spinner from Fliteskin. They have a spinner that is the right shape at 148mm. It is much better than the Platt spinner.

I do have a replacement canopy for this plane. I made a mold from an original canopy. It is not brittle like the one that comes with the plane..
I also have a Cockpit kit for this plane that I made just for this plane if anyone needs one.

I patched up the opening for the DLE muffler. Opened up the exit area and partially blocked the lower scoop. I hope this will be enough for cooling. Thought about a scoop below and just behind the spinner, but don't want to create a high pressure area right at the carb, which might cause it to lean out too much in the air. A club member lost a giant scale Mustang with a front carb that way.

On my Moki front carb gassers I attach a shroud to protect the carb vent from pressure variations created by airflow
Any thin metal like soda can will do
The 109 likes speed, therefore I would recommend a prop with 10" pitch at or over 7500 RPM

I ran the NGH again today since it was not so cold, just inside the open garage door. This time with the plane put together and on its wheels. Restrained. Started ok. Idle about 1,750 rpm, full throttle about 6,450 rpm. This 18-8 RCGF three blade is a copy of a Beila prop and puts a real load on the engine and not turning near rated power. I've ordered a Xoar 17-8 three blade. My DLE 30 turns the Xoar 17-8 three blade about 7,250 rpm, an RCGF 32 same prop at 7,150 rpm. I'm guessing the NGH 35 ought to turn it 7,500-7,800 rpm static so that should work. We'll see. Also I'd rather have the low speed thrust and vertical of the 8 pitch as opposed to the level speed of a 10 pitch. Spring is still two months away and the field under 6-8 inches of snow.

I got the 17-8 Zoar three blade prop and tested on the NGH 35. Turns up 7,320 rpm. This is a new engine so it should gain another 100 rpm or so. This will do ok. Test flight soon. Waiting for the snow to melt and good weather. Also need to fly something else to get current before flying the 109.

That's about the top of the 3-blade range for what the 30 class engines can handle. I turn a 19X10 three blade on my 55s. That's a huge prop for a 35. I'm guessing that w1nd6urfa was speaking about a two blade prop. I typically use 16 X 10 three blades on my 30s.

Yup, 19x10 2-blade
The CMP 109 is not well suited to 3-blades due to the large spinner cone, I prefer 2 blade and an extra inch in diameter - i.e. 18x10 on an MVVS 26

I already have the spinner cone and its already cut for a three blades. My DLE 30 turns the same prop 7,250 rpm and a 32 RCGF 7,150 rpm. So at 7,320 rpm and maybe picking up another 100 rpm when broken in, the NGH 35 is close to what I was expecting. Anyway, just holding the airplane at full throttle, it seems to have plenty of thrust and will be more than enough power. Worried about the 1.2 lbs increase in weight, not lack of power. The cg is exactly where it was before so it should fly ok.

I finally got to test fly the 109 with the NGH 35. It was cold 40 degrees F, overcast, with 5-10 mph east wind, more or less down the runway. It started up ok, tacked at 7,400 rpm with the 17-8 three blade Zoar prop. Usual warbird take off, slowly advance throttle, up elevators, keeping straight with rudder, eased off the elevators, tail came up, took off at about 3/4 throttle. Had to use almost full right rudder. The plane was a little out of trim. Trying to climb, needed several clicks of down and some left aileron trim. The engine seemed to richen up in the air. That is better than leaning out and quitting. So was not getting full power. I'll lean out slightly before the next flight. Able to do large loops and good vertical but not really over powered. Fingers getting cold so I decided I had better land while I still had feeling in my fingers. With gear and flaps down it tried to climb and roll to the right, so I retrimed. I'll need to add some mixes. Landed on the mains with a small bounce, no problem.The extra weight is barely noticeable on landing. I'm glad I went with the 35 instead of a 26. Once I get her leaned out and broke in, it should have plenty of power. No indication of overheating, but weather was cold and flew most of flight at about half throttle, with only short burst of full throttle, also rich. I think my engine swap is a success.

I've flown the 109 twice more with the NGH 35. Got her tuned. Tached 7,550 rpm now it's leaned out and breaking in. Plenty of power now. Flying really good. However, on first take off I over corrected and she went right and had to chop throttle and try again. I'm thinking of getting a gyro to use with the rudder to help this problem. Landing also can be a problem. Really hard to land on the mains without bouncing (with the gear moved forward to prevent nose overs) trying to land 3 pt is as a problem as she doesn't want to land in the three point attitude, then gets too slow and a wing drops. Maybe I'll try less flaps. Anyway the engine swap is a success and I'm happy with the performance of the plane in the air. Now if I can just learn to take off and land.

ok got some wheels from Germany(sunshine modellbau) 50 Euros a set. These have proper rubber rims (closer to Williams bros) with the right tread. These are scale to this model at 119mm although 105 mm might fit better . FYI
