There is no middle when you run 8000kv on 3s. You are going to have to run the smallest pinion you can fit, probably about a 9T.

To Exotek or not to Exotek?

I got 2 RC18MT's back with minor problems. Im thinking about keeping 1 as a truck and putting probably >$200 for an Exotek (TEK18T or R18II) conversion, new motor, esc...

My question is if it is worth it to go with the Exotek conversion or should i skip the kit and just put a brushless engine and make it a bullet proof rc18mt?

I want to Mater a RC18MT, my 3 year old is starting to drive it and wants it to look like Mater from Cars.
I figure I can get a shell and paint it the right colors and find rims to match.
Any ideas how to make a tow hook and dual tires in the back or am I being silly for trying?

for the rear wheels you could try to find 2 thinner tires then fit them the the standard rim

i have some exotek stuff. and if you are going to be pulling a lot of power then you need something strong to stop the chassis twist.

Thanks turok007 for your help!

Now I need to decide which exotek kit to get on-road or off-road?

hey do any of you know where i can find a steel spur, steel differentials, steel dogbones, or any other type of metal that can handle brushless for a RC18MT? or are there things in this list that do not need upgrading?

i have the on road kit. and if the bumper is removed it could be used for off road. but as already said the off road version could be used on road if needed.

Hey all I just found this thread and thought I would try to breath some life into it.
I just bought my self a couple rc18T's on ebay and while i am waiting for them to get here i have been doing to research on what I want to do with them. I paid $130 for 2 complete trucks whith enough spare parts to nearly buid a third truck. one is brushless with a tacon motor and ESC the other is brushed with some form of a hop up motor in it. they both have some aluminum parts on them. they come with one lipo battery and one nimh battery but I don't know any more about them than that. I have picked up a couple additional 2s and 3s batteries and a charger for lipo batts. I'm just waiting for it all to get here so i can see what i bought. I never did get to see any good pics of the trucks but from the descriptions i think I got a pretty good deal for the lot.
I'll post pics when they arrive!

I just got the trucks in today. They were in a bit worse shape than I thought they were going to be in. the one that is brushless has a Hobbyking ESC and a Tacon 4120 Kv motor the front diff is shot and drive shaft is out of it making it just rear wheel drive and the spur gear is stripped. He did tell me I would have to replace the diff gears which there are 3 sets of rea diffs so that not a problem. the other truck is brushed. it has a trinity monster motor in it and a tazer 12t ESC. I am having some trouble getting to ESC programed. it will only go forward. I found the manual for it online and I'm trying to get the thing programmed. I can't get it to work with reverse. or get my throttle and brake set proerly. I took that motor out and put in the brushless sytem into the truck that worked and got it running. only problem so far is one of the front wheel drags and the steering sucks. but that all part of the hobby and working on this stuff is part of what makes it fun!

Exactly - ive got 2 rc18mt's and have never been able to have them run consecutively.
One day after i get all the parts swapped out maybe just maybe they'll both be bullet proof.

Dont know what ill do with all my free time then

using brushless in a stock rc18 is very bad unless you treat it kind. me and a mate had a rc18B each both brushless. mine after about 5 months of on road use was in very good condition but my mates in that time needed all new turn buckles / tires / loads of diffs / 2 or 3 spur gears even a pinion. 2 sets of front drive shafts / half of the screws are glued in / and the steering is beyond belief / about 4/5 lots of servo saver setups / all i can put this down to is the way he was driving it & the lack of knowledge when rebuilding it.

I just burnt out my steering servo, this kinda sucks now. Was it just me, or are the servos a bit weak?

Anyone know of a stronger/better one?

you could upgrade to a standard size servo. i just put a jr z590 in mine. it is metal geared so i removed the servo saver which really tightened up the steering slop. and since it is standard size i should never have to replace it
