Hi all,
I have plans for a COX Warlock, made for an .049. I thought it would be fun to blow up the plans to make an airplane suitable for a .15-.20. Since you all seem well-versed in shrinking plans to fit 1/2A, what ratio do you think I should ENLARGE these plans by to make a plan suitable for a .15 or .20? Thanks.

I'd shoot for something a little smaller than a Super Pacer, which has about a 45" span.
Perhaps 40", or about a 20-25% enlargement. I think the Warlock has a 32-34" span, it's pretty small.
The Super Pacer is a little large for a .15, great with a .25 though.

40" is also a bit bigger than a Herr Little Extra, which is smallish for .15, but plenty of people here
have put .15's on them and love it. Tower still has them for $65 which is a good deal for a great little plane.

Do you think at 40" it would be sufficiently powered by a strong HP .20? I've had one sitting around for a few years with nothing to put it in as it's kind of a weird size.
Thanks
Thanks

I think on a 40" Warlock an HB .20 would be "adequate" power!
("Climbs like a homesick angel", as they used to say.)
I love those old HB's.
Dave
PS I will come down to Shakopee for the maiden flight!

I need to make a copy of my plans as they are getting a bit old and yellow. I'll see if Kinkos can put a copy on disk and send it to you. If they can't, would you just like a copy of the paper plans? Also, if you do a search for Warlock in this forum, there is a thread that has a link to a site where you can buy the plan. Your call.
As I was looking through a box of stuff for these plans I found a bunch of stuff I forgot I had (I packed the box more than 15 years ago) including TD .09 with cox throttle! I also had a brand new, in the package Medallion .09 glowhead! It was like Christmas. I also found a SuperTigre .60 and a really old Veco .19. Now, the only problem I have is that there is no needle valve for the .09 carb. Any thoughts on where I could get one?
Fritzke - (OT) where do you fly? I just joined the TCRC club in Jordan as it is only 10 miles from my house and has two paved runways. The guys seemed really friendly when I stopped by there to inquire about joining and that is most important to me.

OK, guys. I have sticker shock and a guilty conscience. I went to my LHS today because I really believe I should support the local guys. My intent was to buy the balsa to build this upsized warlock. Picking through the balsa, it was quickly totalling up to over 70.00. I was shocked! I couldn't justify spending that amount on balsa. Tonight, I decided to look at an online seller of balsa. I ended up, with shipping, paying under 40 bucks for everything I need to build the plane. But I feel guilty that I didn't support my LHS. I suppose I shouldn't feel so bad because I have bought everything else for all my planes there, but still...
Anyway, as soon as my package comes from Brown, I can start building the Warlock .20. Can't wait.

Thanks, justflewin, for the info. I didn't know they even made a .40 size. I don't want to go as big as a .40 because I'd have to buy another engine and that means getting approval from the "The One Who Controls the Pocketbook". I had the plans for the .05 from a kit that I built and destroyed many years ago. I was afraid I wouldn't be able to fly an unmuffled .049 at the club's field, though, so I decided to blow up the .05 plans to make one big enough for the great HB .20 I have sitting around doing nothing.
Now if that Brown truck would just show up at the house, life would be GREAT!

We still have my dads old .049 Cox Warlock that he built many years ago, it hasn't been flown since he had to repair it years ago. I also found the .40 size Warlock on an internet auction and didn't hesitate to buy it. I will probably start building it pretty soon. The .20 sized plane should be interesting, let us see some photos of the finished plane if you are able.

Well, got the wing sanded and ready to go. I found a neat trick, too. The plans say to build the entire wing flat, cut it down the middle between the two center ribs and then sand in a bevel for dihedral. I figured the dihedral to be 3 degrees. Rather than do the sanding and hope to get it right, I found a bit of hard balsa and cut 1 and 1/2 degree bevels on each side of it using my tablesaw. Then I glued the two sides of the wing to it. Instant dihedral. Helps to have a really accurate saw and a sharp blade. Here's a picture of the wing. Have started on the tail feathers now. Hope to have those done tomorrow night...
I seem to be having trouble uploading an image. It says "there was an error saving the file to disk". Anyone know the trick?

THough I know it really isn't 1/2A anymore since it has an HB .20 on it, I thought you might want to see how the upsized Warlock turned out. It has a 42 inch wing, full house controls including two servos in the wing for the ailerons and an 1100 milliamp battery pack. Still, it only came out to 42 ounces (2 lb, 10 oz). I maidened it tonight and it flew beautifully. Very stable, moderately fast, a floater on landing. I have learned a lot from you guys on this forum. Thanks for all the ideas.

WOW! I have the smaller warlock and have to say I absolutely love it! I also have a 2o size here looking for a home. How long did it take you to scratch build it? Curious since I just bought 2 kits to get started on some building. Next maybe something like this. Nice job! Very classy looking plane.

Beautiful plane Tim. It really looks nice at that scale. Congratulations on a successful project. A while back I scaled a Kaos down to 42" and it flew great. Recently I scaled a Sig Wonder up to 42" and will fly it this week. The old Midwest Flea Fli +10 was 42", too.

Thanks for the compliments.
Kevin, it took me about two weeks of a few hours each night to build the frame. The wing went together in two nights. I had to change a few things like the sheeted turtledeck after the stringer turtledeck broke in my hands - knew I should have sheeted it from the start - and widening the firewall to hold the HB .20. The covering took the longest (another couple weeks of evenings because I hadn't monokoted anything in more than 10 years (I usually glass my larger planes). Remembered all the reasons why I don't like monokote [:@] Lots of swearing involved. Will try something different next time.
Anyway, I'm really happy with this plane's flight characteristics. I would suggest it as a scratchbuilt to anyone who has made a plane from a kit before and is looking for a bit of a challenge. Its a nice change to do all the work yourself.
Next - The SureShark I got from Dave a couple months back.

Great looking plane Exocet, I imagine it did fly beautifully. I am amazed that you were able to scratch build that fast! I have been working on my .40 sized Warlock off and on for the last 2 months and am almost finished. I'll post pics of it when I get done, I guess it somewhat pertains to this thread considering it is a Warlock. Maybe I'll post pics of the 1/2a Warlock as well to make it fit!

Tim, I feel the same way about plastic iron-on film. I curse and swear through the whole process.
If I'm not using Koverall and dope I use Worldtex from Horizon. It's the same thing as Solartex. It is actually fun applying it to a model because it works so well. No wrinkles and no bubbles. Because it's fabric you can iron it over itself and the air escapes, so never any bubbles with multiple layers. It also does not sag or wrinkle over time, even if left in the hot sun all day. Best of all you can iron it around curved surfaces with ease. It stretches as you heat it and pull it around wing tips, etc. It's truly amazing stuff. If that isn't enough, it is super easy to paint. You don't have to scuff it or prime it. Just mask off and spray.
I use the transparent colors because they are lighter and paint the trim with Brodak dope. I love the results. Once you use this stuff you will never go back to plastic film.

R2Champion,
regarding the speed of the build, it helps to have a fully loaded woodworking shop in my garage. Its amazing how fast you can cut and sand parts with a 14" bandsaw and a 12" stationary disk sander. I found that the tablesaw does as nice a job on balsa as it does on walnut...

Tim, if your LHS is a Horizon dealer they can order it for you. Or, just order it online:
