From: boston, MA,
I just bought a e-flight and have had experiance with nitro planes, just diving into the whole electric thing. My question is what is required to make it hover, And climb vertical. Although im not rich I would rather wait and get the best setup possible. Thanks

Is it the Tribute, Ultimate, or Tensor?
There are several choices that would give unlimited vertical.
Himax 2015/4100, Himax or GWS gearbox (D or 6:1 ratio) or E-Flite Park 370 motor, 3s 1200 lipo, 12-6 gws slowfly prop, Castle Creations Phoenix 10 or 25 esc, Berg Micro Stamp receiver, Hitec HS-55 servos. This will shoot straight up fast, as well as give 15-20 minutes flying time.
The Himax or E-Flite outrunner motors are nice too. A tad less power but still straight up.
You could even get away with a full size receiver and/or servos, but performance would suffer, although might still go straight up, just not as responsive as a lighter setup.

Which E-flite motor did you get? If it was the 370 4100 motor then the D gear ratio is the one that I use because I can swing a 12x6 propeller and it will have plenty of power to hover and go vertical. I've always liked the longer propellers when it comes to hovering but the 11x4.7 and the 10x4.7 work well too. Battery wise if your looking to save weight I like the 3 cell 860. You wont get long flight times but your keep you plane lite. The 3 cell 1320 is also good if your looking for longer flight times and your not worried about weight. Have fun.

Gonna cost a bunch for a nice brushless setup, and as has been the case with me might come with lots of headaches to.
I prefer direct drive motors, just don’t much like gear drive units. Direct drive is quieter as well. Anyway the Axi 2212/34 or the HiMaxx 2812/0650 will both give you more than power to hover and pull out vertical fast. I run an 11†prop on my Eflite Ultimate. The 12†touches the ground too easily. I might even go to a 10†prop since anything short of a perfect harrier landing and the 11†touches the pavement as well. Since it doesn’t glide well dead sticks are not the smoothest landings with these little electrics. Dead stick with my glow planes is a piece of cake. I’d suggest a 25 amp ESC for either motor, and I use Thunder Power 3s 1320mah li-po batteries on my plane. If you go with lighter batteries, lower mah rating, they will be lighter so performance will be better, but flight times will be reduced. With 1320mah you should get 15-20 minutes, with 860’s I hear you’ll get about 10 minutes.

It will be excellent on the Ultimate. With 3s it will go straight up. They are nice motors, very quiet and smooth. I have one and my brother has three. I have ordered from them but it's been a while. Look here too. I order all the time and they are fast. Very good place. Look for the Himax combo deal in brusless motors. $100 for CC Phoenix 10 and 0980 outrunner motor, $113 if you want a 25 esc.

yes the himax is better than teh axi (IMO) it is like 8% more efficient. it will have more than a 2 to 1 power to weight ratio with a 3 cell. i sugest a 1320 li-po. but there are other options bigget and smaller. anything else let me know. john

I have thought of a one servo mod. I have moved the control horns on the lower alirons up to the top the upper wing alirons. Then plan on cutting a hole in the center of the wing so that it can all be done with one. Will this still provide good handling? I pan on using the Hitec sub micro servos. Thanks

Yes. No need for 2 aileron servos unless you want to use mixing like flaperon. I use one servo on my Foamy Factory Ultimate and Tensor bipes. Use something like an HS-55 and it will be fine.
