RE: The new electric YAK 54 from Greatplanes!
Fingers,
Personally I think it's alittle on the thin side for how large of control surface it has. Also , when I installed my CF spars....the balsa was almost like a sea grade or such. Very soft with little bracing. All tail failures that I witnessed on 4 individual yaks were almost exactly the same breaks. Your choice if you wish to completely replace it but CF spars are working for me.... Good luck.

Do you guys think I would be better off just making a new horizontal stab since I hate the transparent covering any how. I have not built it yet but dont want any problems. What is the exact cause of the failure? Is the stab made out of a contest balsa or just to thin? Also I to have not read every post in this forum, I just don't have time to dedicate my life to rc universe forums so try not to jump me to bad.

haz, When do you plan on flying? I'm curious as to how much you improved the performance compared to the rf 950? Looking forward to your results.

Well guys i just removed the rf 950 and installed the 1250 . WOT 11x5.5 apc 31 amps 311 watts 2100 apex, 10x5 apc 254 watts 24 amps I also tested a 12x3.8 sf but that was over 336 watts . Iam also using a 35 amp esc. Capt G what amp esc are you using? I like the 11x5.5 but i think the 31 amps on my batts is a bit to much, the Suggested Prop Size is a 10x7 I will pick one up and git it a try.

RE: The new electric YAK 54 from Greatplanes!
I have yet to fly my yak I just finished it last week i think then i read the stuff abought the rf 950 and i ordered the 1250 and just installed it yesterday. What do you think abought a 10x7 prop? It is the only one recommended for the rf 1250.The 11x5.5 ran well but the amp draw was abought at the limit for my batts (15C).The weather here in new mexico has not been too good the past week so thats why i have not flown. And the other reason for switching to the rf 1250 for me is the altitude( 6500 ft) I am not into 3d too much, more of a sport flyer. I will try both 950 and the 1250 when i get time

Well i did more tests todaywith the rf 950 and 1250,the 950 with a 12x6e prop 208 watts 19 amps the 1250 with a 10x7 prop 261 watts 27 amps. I think i will fly it with the 1250 and the 10x7e prop.

GP 950 Kv with a 10X7 APC slo fly prop works the best for that GP motor. Not enough RPM's for an E prop with the 950 KV. I took my GP rimfire out and put in a Hacker and it's twice the plane now. The elevator fix is a must in my opinion. Put power in it or sit on the porch with the poodles!

So did you go with the 22S like what bzyguy is using, or the 28S? I'm planning on the 22S myself.

RE: The new electric YAK 54 from Greatplanes!
I tried out the greatplanes yak and was not that impressed with the kit. I did the rimfire 35-30 950kv and recomended prop. not much power at all. This plane I thought was made from weak balsa. on the 5th flight and not a violent flight at all pulling up from a simple power off dive the right wing broke off. It broke out the side of the fuse with the wing. I returned it to GP and they said it was not glued good enough to hold the wing on. Oh wait the wing held on cause it took the fuse with it. The wing joiner broke inside the fuse. They did send me a new plane and I traded it to the LHS here for the mini funtana X Now this is a plane! built with better balsa and built all round better. can be assembled in the time frame they advertise Unlike most greatplanes triple the time it takes tp build from the time they claim. and the recomded E-flite moter and prop gives the watts the motor is claimed to produce unlike like the rimfire. I can not even come close to the watts they say say it produces. I am sure with a 4 cell I might, but do that to this plane and you add another 6 or ounces with a rx batt and the extra cell so now your plane is well over 2 pounds on a moter that is rated for 3d under 2 lbs hmmmm now add a little more weight to reiforce the landing gear so it will hold up to th added weight.
Ok thats my ranting here cause this was the second greatplanse plane that the wings broke off in flihgt. and the only planes I ever had problems with.

yz lvr,
The 22s has been Excellent with a "E" prop. The 28s is lower KV and did not fly as well as the 22s. I tried both. If you have a 28s you will want to run a "E" prop like a 11X7 or 11X10 range but again it doesn't fly as well as the Higher KV 22S on a 3 cell 2100 lipo with a 11X7 "E" prop. I swear!....This setup is great! It flys much smoother and less torque rolling at slow maneuvers with the "E" prop rather that the large bladed "SF" prop. The higher KV with the 22s vs 28s is nice because the prop will slip some when the throttle is applied rather than grabbing tons of air as you stab the throttle and torque roll it over requiring more rpm that the 28s and 950KV Rimfire provides. Sean @ Hacker was at a fly meet and helped us set this bird up and gave us his 2 cents. If sean @ hacker spent time with you like he did us on your setup with your own bird, you would have the confidence that I have with our GP yak.
The 28S is still a better choice over the low KV 950 Rimfire tho. The GP yak wont fly a large enough prop to make it worth using that low of kv (950) on this bird. A 12 inch prop tries to mow the grass when I flew one during testing.
My reccomendations:
950KV...........Sell it, or if you must .............11X7 "SF" apc on 4 cells<-----------much better on 4 cells vs 3 cells. OK
1140KV hacker.........11x7 "E" apc on 3 cells Better
1440KV hacker............11X7 "E" apc on 3 cells Best
I would imagine tho, not personally tested, but others have used and liked the 1250 Rimfire with 3 cells.
I hope this test data helps some of you make chioces on your setups.
NOTE: I fly above and beyond the recommended limits! I'm hard on equipment and don't like underpowered birds. I think I'm addicted to adrenaline and this should be considered when looking at my data. But Sean @ hacker likes wayyy too much power like me and my close friends.
I added a tail wheel to mine as the wood skid had a very short life and I used dubro hardware instead of the factory GP stuff.

RE: The new electric YAK 54 from Greatplanes!
Those parts may not have a place on the Yak. The parts tree is probably generic enough that GP uses it with several other kits as well. I don't have the Yak (yet...), but I've had a couple of their flatout kits and always had extra parts left over.

Capt. G---Howz your performance with the larger Rimfire motor in terms of pulling out of a Hover? What percentage power is it taking to hover, and how fast can you pull up and out of it as you advance the throttle?
Thanks.
Thanks.

Bzguy:
I know you like the Hackers, but what do you think about using the Rimifre 35-30-1450 vs the 1250 Rimfire that Capt. G is using? The higher Kv Rimfire is rated virtually the same as the Hacker a30-22s, and weighs the same amount. I am pretty new to e-flying and am trying to figure out all the specs, but at first glance it looks like the larger 35-30-1450 will come closer to the Hacker performance than the 1250, for the same price as the 1250.
Also, when you put the CF on the stab, did you just sandwich the existing wood between two pieces of CF?
Thanks!

aviationinfo,
I have not tested that motor myself but as a rule of thumb....All of my testing on GP rimfire stuff came in way lower than they claimed the rimfire would do. The Hacker stuff has surpassed the specs they provide. Capt G seems happy with the 1250 setup and Myself you know I would use the A30-22s but between the rimfire motors? I would probably shoot for the 1450 myself and use an "E" 10" or try a 11" 3.5 to 7 pitch range to start. Just watch your amp draw and watts. If the amp draw is real high lower the pitch on your prop.

RE: The new electric YAK 54 from Greatplanes!
Well i got to fly my yak last week with the RF 1250 and the 10x7e apc.(261 watts 27amps) The plane flew well but it did seem kinda underpowered. I think it would have been better with a bigger prop (11x5.5 apc 311 watts 31 amps) amp draw too high.I pulled the 1250 RF and reinstalled the 950 to do more tests with a bigger prop This time insted of the apex 2100 15c I used me thunder power 2100 15c and i got 10-20 more watts than with the apex. ( RF 950 apex 2100 12x6e 209 watts 19 amps) (950 rf thunder power 2100 12x6e 224 watts 20 amps)(rf 950 11x4.7sf apex 2100 208 watts)(11x4.7sf thunder power, 231watts 20 amps ) With a 11x7sf and thunder power 2100 i got 246 watts 23 amps,This is the setup for my next flight.

BZ-
You seem pretty smart on this motor stuff... How would the Torque 2818/900 from Extreme FLight work on this baby? It's the one that EF reccomends for the 45 inch Extra that they sell. I think power wise it will be plenty, but how about extra weight and wing loading. I plan on 2100 Thunder Power 3 cells as well. Thanks.

RE: The new electric YAK 54 from Greatplanes!
Iam getting around 230 watts at 20amps with a apc 12/6e and a dn power 2150 15c and holding it in my hand it feels like there is plenty of thrust with th 35-30-950. I have not flown it yet but Iam happy with the rimfire fo 50$
the torque is heavyer than the rimfire and cost a bit more but I would say it would have tons of punch over the rimfire

RE: The new electric YAK 54 from Greatplanes!
okielarry I thought the 12x6e was i little to big for ground Clearance.Iam using these for wheels http://www.3dhobbyshop.com/detail.aspx?ID=1592 (2") maybe i could go to 2 1/2" wheels. Let us know how it flys.
