Default Please help an electric NOOB!

I flew R/C for several years in the late 90's and am wanting to get back into it withOUT the fuel, mess and clean-up!

I've kept sharp on the simulator from time to time and recently bought an Align 450SE V2 heli as a start to electron-flying.

Tonight I came across a plane on Ebay that I went ahead and ordered: It's a 46" Hyperion Cap 232 25E

I picked it because it looks about right for my flying experience AND because it should fly on my Kong and ThunderPower 3S 2100 and 2200 packs from my heli and since I already own 5 packs and a couple of chargers that ought to save some $$$.

At any rate, I see Hyperion suggests a Hyperion HP-Z3019-12 motor and a Hyperion HP-Titan 50A BEC control.

SO NOW... I FINALLY get to my question...

I don't know SQUAT about these new outrunner motors OR the related speed controllers. I see that the Z3019-12 lists it's vital specs as:

Outside Diameter 37mm
Length 44mm
Weight 142 Grams
KV rpm/V 900 (Not sure what THAT means yet!)
Peak Current 42A for 60 sec.

They also recommend either a 50A or 80A BEC controller

SO.... I'd love to hear some input on the 2 or 3 "best brands" of outrunner type motors and controllers and any SPECIFIC suggestions of which model motor and controller would be a good replacement for the Hyperion or a good match for this airframe:

46" span
42" length
430 Sq In Wing area
2.25 to 2.50 lbs (1000-1200 grams)

Thanks in advance for your help. I'm a little lost without just being able to say a .45 2-stroke or a .60 4-stroke, etc. LOL!

Steve

Your batteries are best suited to the 480 size planes such as the E flite line up.
The Cap you bought will probably demand bigger and perhaps 4 cell batteries.Depending on your budget, you may want to stick with just a touch smaller model with 25-35 amp ESC and small servos like the HS55 or S75.The cap will probably require HS65 or so.
Its all in the budget though, really depends how much you like to spend.

If you do a google search for (MotoCalc) you can download a free version of this program, you can then use it to input the specs/performance you want your aircraft to have, the program will give you a list of, Batteries, Motors, ESC's and props to get your desired results. This program is well worth a look, and will give answers to most of the performance questions/grey areas that people have when setting up an electric aircraft power system.

Hope this helps a bit.

Cheers guru

fiveinarrow - get the Hyperion motor of 900KV, it makes things easier. The motor is just right for a plane that size. As for ESC, go with a 40A, that will suffice. Any ESC will do, no need to be branded. Most ESCs are pretty reliable and the non branded ones are a lot cheaper. If not then go with the Hyperion.

900KV is a rating, it means for 1 volt the motor will turn at 900RPM.

fiveinarow:

I have been a Castle Creations esc fan for quite a few years, quality with no supprises. There are some new kids in the block that deserve some consideration due to their flexability where CC is deffinately restricted. Try the "Airboss" in the 40 amp range you need. You are still able to use the builtin bec cirtut and go to as much as 5 cell batteries with no problem without the added bec needed with CC. I find myself having to buy additional bec systems so I can try 4 cells with my current controllers by CC. Yes, I am lazy, the major concern for me is being sure of the completed system being wired correctly. I trust my flying, but not my wireing. ENJOY

Seems like a 50 or 80 amp ESC is overkill for a 2.5lb. plane. The 480 motor is 1000kv and only requires a 40amp. E-flite and some others have good ESC's Castle Creations is the more expensive of them. The are a very good ESC but $$$$ on the pocket book. I only run a 60 amp on a 25 size motor. I don't know what the motor your combo. is in realitive size. With the 25 motor I also use two lipo 2100's. You can make your a deal to run two batteries or buy one. Two plugs that plug into batts. and run into one that plugs into ESC. That way you don't have to buy batteries and with this your getting 11.1V and 4200ma. Depends on YOU you can use what they call for or find a motor equal in Power. I hate all the different motor #'s these companies use. It would be so much easier if they went 1,2,3,4, etc. and just went by brand Name. A 1 being a motor for say a profile foam that weighs just a few oz. And say a 15 or so for the biggest. That way the plane manufactuers could just put a # on the box for the plane instead of 10-283-59 who in the heck knows what all that means. Say you buy the plane you have and it says you need a # 6 motor with a 40amp ESC. Then you could look at any brand of motor and know that there # 6 motor would be the one for you. So easy. If need they could even go with 6.5 but it sure is confusing trying to find a motor that will be the same as you have. Given all the #'s they use.
