Default Great Planes Extra 300sp - 3D Setups

If you have aGreat Planesextra 300sp, post your setups here. I'm looking for some advice with engine and prop selection.

Guess you are referring to the 55" blue-yellow 50 size model. I have one but it is still in box. My starting point would be a 55ax with 13x4 prop and standard size servos on all control surfaces with reinforcement for the firewall and the LG Block. I would then explore a larger engine say a 72A or thereoff if the 55 didnt have sufficient power for this very light airplane which is very unlikely

Yes that is the plane that i'm referring to. I have the OS 55AX in now with a 12X6 and it's a little gutless. I'll take a trip to the hobby shop tomorrow and report in saturday aftera morning at the field.

The ideal prop for that is the 12x8 or 13x6. I noted that the engine sounds very different with a 13x6. Put one on and see, it has sufficient power, you can try the 13x4. I had the same on a Reactor which weighed 5.8-5.9lb and it didnt have the power to hover. Now I have a 75ax on that airplane.

The 300SP is much smaller and hence lighter than the Reactor so I feel the 75 would be too heavy. In fact I had to add a lot of weight (28-30oz) in the tail to balance it so I will not recommend the 75. Put a 72a and try it out, its much lighter, even than the 55ax. Alternatively, you can try the new 65ax, its cheaper than the 72A. But based on the reviews I have read, the 55 should be enough.

In the articles section there is a review by Steve Herlacher on that airplane. May be you can drop him a PM. Thats how I started

ameyam, are you sure you had to put 28-30 OUNCES in the tail to balance that Reactor? Sounds a bit beyond belief IMHO.

I have one of these planes (Extra 300SP) with an OS 70 Surpass II four stroke in it. Balances right on, and its AUW is exactly 6 pounds. Running a 13x6APC on it, it's nice for sport pattern but not 3D so much. I tried a 14x4 and that just made the plane too slow to me. I am not sure this is a great 3D plane with the weight and wing loading perhaps a bit too high for that. Just my 2 bits. Jon

Thanks guys for the input on the Extra. I have a 12X8 so maybe i'll give that a try tomorrow morning at the field. Flight 4 and 5 this morning went well. The other catch is that I live in Quito Ecaudor we have a number of great fields here but the lowest elvation is at 6 889 ft and our highest field is at: 9 186 ft.

Well I just installed an OS 75 AX in my Extra 300sp.

Only had to put 4 oz in the tail to be balanced at 105mm. Maiden is tomorrow morning, well see how it goes. Put a 14X4W on and we should have some fun.

Boy I would think that 75 would be awesome on this plane. Please give us an update on how she flies.

I'm running an Evolution .60nx with an APC 12x6 prop, 3 standard bb servos, 1 mini servo, 1 high torque digital servo and am weighing in at 5lb and 15oz. Radio is setup in dual rates. One is between the manual recommended low and high rates, and the other is set for 3D. Knife edges are great with this plane. The elevator deflection is not so good for a slow flat spin but good in other aerobatic movements. I've got about 20 flights on her and getting more comfortable with the stall speed. She does nice rolling circles. The .60nx does really well with this plane. It willhover and then pull out of a hover pretty nicely. Doesn't pull out really fastthough. Had this engine ona Twist 40 and it was ascreamer with crazy vertical but that plane weighed8oz lighter and had a 13x4 prop on it to keep it slower.

This plane is not likely ever going to satisfy pilots that seek top performance in the 3D class at all. Its fun all around, but has its limits.

Best to go electric in a similar size from a different vendor period, thats a FACT.

Very true she isn't going to fly like a top level 3d machine but i do live in Quito Ecuador and our local fields are at 2200, 2900 and 2600 meters.  To ensure an unlimited rate of climb we have to put some bi engines in our birds.  <div>
</div><div>After 8-10 tanks she's flying like a dream, still have some elevator tweeking to do but i should be able to sort that out the next day at the field.  The 75ax in this plan is probably over kill for most applications but it's been a great plane to build an appetite for another bigger and more agile bird.</div>
