The 55 lbs limit, I presume you mean in the US, most of the rest of the world, go higher, here in Canada we are limited to over 70 lbs.

I know someone whos building a really large plane, and it has to get checked out by the CAA first, so any problems will be picked out before it flies.

just a question..I wonder at what scale for aerobatic aircraft you go away from the model type airfoils to the full scale type aerobatic airfoil, they are very different?? I know a smaller extra using a scale type airfoil is very unstable and no way would be able to do the slow 3d type menouvers easily..

Default I gotta get in on this

Ok all of you people out there questioning this plane let me tell you about some ultralights out there that I am more affraid of then someone that has built several very large model planes and understands the stresses more than a joe shmoe that has not idea but has a picture of what it is to look like. I have seen an ultra light being picked up by the tail with the wings on sawhorses and when it was picked up the wings sagged so they stay rested on the horses instead of picking up as well. This is a man carrying machine.

Those are some cool pictures of some really BIG planes, Roger!

While I think those big passenger jet models are fun to look at I can't understand the alure of owning one. Obviously they are big and impressive looking, but beyond that???? I mean, how much fun can one of those possibly be to fly?

I know, to each his own, but I'm hoping to hear from sombody who flys a passenger jet. I'd love to hear what they have to say about it.

Default 70% STAUDACHER

Hello my name is Bob Sawyer, and I am the owner, designer, and builder of this aircraft. It seems that there is allot of controversy about this thing, and my intentions. I will try to explain some of your questions, but first let me tell you a little about my background. I have been building and flying R/C models for more than 25 years. I also have built and flown in several homebuilt full scale aircraft for myself; as well as others. Through my involvement in aviation I met individuals that had money for home builts, but no time to build, so I started a small business professionally building aircraft. This came to an end in the early 80's when I went to work for NASA`S DRYDEN FLIGHT RESEARCH CENTER EDWARDS A.F.B. CALIF. as an engineering tech in the Research & Development department. Some years later I decided to move to San Antonio and start a new business in composites. That business today is in the top 3% nationally with its competition. So I am no mad man, clueless and oblivious to what I'm doing or where I'm going with this, and yes the aircraft has things like rib stitching and duel ignition along with all full scale aircraft grade materials and mill spec. hardware. This thing from conception was never intended to be flown at any AMA field or AMA sanctioned event . The only real purpose of this aircraft was and is for personal pleasure. I will be carrying my own liability policy when I fly due to the fact that AMA will only insure up to 100 lbs. in the experimental category & 55 lbs. in the normal category. As for the possibility of John Travolta flying a Boeing business jet R/C equipped over our cities... Well I can`t do anything about that, I can tell you that when this aircraft is flown it will be only with a ground crew and a very few select persons, in a remote unpopulated area. and for you skeptics, this isn`t the type of aircraft that if the loss of control falls burden to me , the aircraft could fly five miles away and crash, it will plummet to earth in seconds !!! And last but not least there really are plans for a 70 % edge 540 full 3D capable.

Sincerely,
Bob Sawyer

Just curious? Could I ask how much that would cost RTF?

Hello guys, no it has not flown as of yet, it is not quite finished. I would love to have everybody that has asked to see the first flight, but that would be way to dangerous. and if I where into the mega scale RTF business this thing... well 55K materials & parts 18 months my labor. You do the math.

sincerely Bob.

Sounds to me like I could easily fit a Lotus Elise 190 into that budget. No.....Thanks for the offer, but I'll stick to my dream of a fancy sports car.

Enjoy that big plane and please keep us posted on the first flight.

Bob is a personal friend, so I wanted to get my two cents in. The project is aggressive by anyone's standards. But you have to know the person. He is one of the best composite experts in the business with a thriving company which makes composite components for corporate jets. He has been in the aircraft business his entire life and learned from some of the best like Burt Rutan. Bob has built several very successful ultralights and has worked for NASA as well as other prominent aircraft companies. His love for R/C started at a very early age and he is well known around these parts for his abilities. You would have to see this plane in person to appreciate the quality of workmanship and attention to detail. Why did he do it?..... because he could. Not many in this hobby would have the talent and know how to bring this project to fruition. Bob can and will. As far as safety, it will only fly once insured and completely checked out. (You don't want to know what the insurance will cost.) I for one, hope I am there for the maiden flight....it will be awesome.

Default HOW MUCH ?

OK lets say for the sake of arguing that a plane of this magnitude costs 100K .

Who out there knows how this would compare in price to the full size aircraft ?
