This is comical. Here we are, a select group of individuals with the mental ability and keyed reflexes great enough to control an RC aircraft, yet we question something as simple as this. Is there a set up with enough thrust to push a plane backwards? Yes. Enough to sustain and move with the weight of a plane above it? Yes. But, even with directional vectoring of the prop it would only be a balancing act to say the least. Unless the thrust was so great that it would move air from, lets say, up around the ceiling, then there is no air flow over the surfaces. Aside from the throttle, there is no control. The air is being pulled from a small pool around the nose of the plane. The air disturbance near the tail is minimal. Common sense is knocking on the door of "cabin fever" Let it in.

Heck the prop in that pic doesnt look like its moving. The way his hands are its like he is making a sudden movement of some sort.

For now I am unconvinced

Hey Guys,
The photo is real- The only control that is effective (so far) is the throttle. The longest I kept it from crashing was about 2 or 3 seconds. I think what we have to do is think of this as a "concept". Controlled nose down hovering is still a ways away. Props have to be redesigned and an alternate method of control developed, among many other things I'm sure.
Where things could get interesting is having reverse thrust on an electric. I doubt that there will be enough thrust to hover if the prop is on the right way around. But this may open up a new envelope and expand 3-d maneuvers further. Only time will tell! I can think of a few maneuvers that I'd like to introduce reverse thrust to!
We've done alot with the conventional airplane for 3-d - I wonder what we can design to expand maneuvers even further?
take care,
jon

You start a waterfall, then whenthe plane is pointed straight at the ground, a quick full throtle burst of reverse thrust using opposite elevayor, then back to standard to finish the waterfall that gains altitude. Cool man. Nice move.

Well, my thoughts on what you gotta do.. setup your electric with a pusher and a puller, both on reversible speed controls. That way, no matter which way your nose is pointed, you'll have prop wash over the control surfaces. Kinda cheating, but it would be cool to see none the less. You could even run both motors off of one controller, since most car controllers are upwards to the 100+ amps. That way both motors would be getting the same amount of juice.

I've been looking for a small brushless speed control that has reverse - to no avail. What I'm going to try is a brushed gws motor with a small rc car speed control - at least give some idea of potential. I doubt that a controlled inverted hover will be possible but the braking effect of reverse thrust will be neat to mess with. If anyone knows of a small brushless speed control with reverse please let me know! I'd like to eventually design a plane that can fly both ways.

If you tried it with a bigger plane you can use the L-160rc here http://www.aveox.com/controll.html#l160rc It's heavy at 2.6 ounces, but if you match it with a bigger motor and plane it would work. Anyway, glad you're having fun Jon. I look forward to seeing you fly agian at the next probro.

I think glow and gas flyers dont understand electrics very well. It is possible to inverted hover it. What Jon did is real, and maybe not a controlled 1+ minute hover, but the fact is HE DID HOVER IT INVERTED, even if it was for a second.

If you guys are going to talk the talk, you better be able to walk the walk. Jon just proved himself

I can hover uproght Steve...LOL Whats the point because you cant even do a flight over 2 mintues when hovering inverted. Id rather toque rol right side up!!! More fun to me

Lot of talk coming from a young'n. Find it funny the whole "cant fly more then 2 minutes". Thing is, I crashed once, had enough ego to post it, show my retardness, and say pilot error.

Second of all, torque rolling isnt hard and either is hovering, I can do it, so you must suck too. Funny, I can even do harrier rolling circles in either direction... but you dont see me throwing it in your face.

Next time, make a more educated remark.

Piece of advice, you make your sponsors look bad when you do that

Hi Jason,
Thanks for the idea! I may have to use a bigger plane to go brushless- what a shame it seems like nobody makes a small brushless w/reverse. We'll figure something out!
Can't wait till the next Pro Bro! I'm sure we've all had enough of this winter stuff.
talk to you soon Jason,
Jon

=(

Woooow chill guys.

Hobby - should be fun.

Whether this is or isn't hovering, at least it's sparked some ideas.

Jon I like the thought of reversing the thrust, intersting in a waterfall, blender entry, etc.

Now I'm no electric wizz, and thse small foam 3d models just aren't available over here but am I righ in thinking that to reverse the rotation of a brushless you have to swap two of the motor connections?

I guess these motors on the small models are only sucking sub 10Amps? If so what about using a servo to drive something similar to a small mechanical speed controler that swaps the motor wires? A double pole, double throw switch basically. This would have to be switched or mixed in on a different chanel but I guess could beachieved at under 25grams, possibly closer to 15g with a 4.6g servo, a couple of bits of cuircuit board and a nut and bolt.

I guess from this side of he pond I'll have to watch this space.

Good luck with the quest.

sj.
