From: Flagstaff, AZ,
I have heard comments about the article made in model aviation regarding needing a 33% or 40% plane to perform 3d. I'm curious what is everyones definition of hovering or other 3d maneuvers.
I have seen small planes do 3d however they didn't look very good. Looks like the plane is basically out of control. I have NEVER seen a small plane hover as I would define it. To me hovering is maintaining control for as long as the pilot desires. It wasn't until I started flying 33% planes that I felt I was beginning to achieve this level of control. Note beginning, still have a long way to go. If hovering means stopping the plane for 1-2 revs than I can hover anything with enough power.
I believe the article may be defining the level of control not just doing a maneuver.
The new 3d planes coming out look very interesting. I have a Fun Extra on order from 3W. Its been 3 mos. and its always going to ship next week. Someday. Anyone flying it?
I notice all the pics of planes are at nice grass fields. Not in AZ our field is dirt and when hovering, the plane can be engulfed by dust. I'm sure most of you have seen this at the TOC. This is how I came up with blowin dirt.

The larger the plane the easier it is to fly. Simply put it's much harder to hover a small plane vs a 40% plane and maintain that flawless control that you are looking for...
I'd say if someone can hover a small .40 size airplane with enough control to be able to walk up and grab it from the air then it's under enough control however at the same time it's not hovering so still that is not moving in some way or another. It requires constant inputs to help maintain the hover as well as the big birds do but you see the movements alot easier in the smaller planes...

Hi BlowinDirt,
To see my small OS 32 SX powered fun fly in action check out my web page http://homepage.eircom.net/~skycam/ and go to the AVI Video section and look for
How do you retrieve a model plane at 'NIGHT' from a 'LAKE' and theres no wind to help ? ?
This was done in the dark over a lake after another flyer had crashed in it earlyer on in the day. I got my model to blow it back to the shore as we had no boat available. Now thats small aircraft hovering.

I agree with David & Davie
"To me hovering is maintaining control for as long as the pilot desires"
One can do this on a small Funfly too! uve just seen davie's video!!
The big birds are extremely spectacular to watch! everyone would agree with you on that

Hovering is the plane not spinning, opposing the toque with ailerons while Torque rolling is letting the plane spin from the torque produced by the engine.
The pilots were probably out of control
Theres 2 levels. Those who do 3d with their fingers crossed and those with complete control over their models, the second level takes time and 95% people are in the first level..... I would say control is doing torque rolling vertical squares and being able to hold the plane above a spot the move the plane over to another spot, fully in control. The Iam in japan is a good example. They had maneuver's while in the TR, this was with 2m pattern style models and they really were in control. The advantage I see of big planes and 3d, wind doesn't become quite a factor in the nose up position. OK, a small plane I think is much HARDER to hover in control!! than a say TOC plane... The larger they are, the slower they move and the longer you have to respond to the planes movement. Most of the big bird pilots like to say that they are hard to 3d but really they are easier/ more stable than a funfly!!
I think he meant like this!! haha

Great replies, Nice job Mike and Wayne you must be extremely skilled. Maybe I should try a fun fly. Never have for 3d.
Anyone doing 3d maneuvers should be proud it takes allot of skill both on the flying and building side of the hobby.
I have been to many events and have not seen a small model or even a large model hover except at the TOC. Oh yea and Billy did hover his 50% at an IMAC. To me hovering is the ultimate RC maneuver. I'm sure everyone has a favorite. Being able to fly in a straight line can be harder than it sounds and some people may view this as being the ultimate maneuver.
Difference is what makes it all work.

I have seen a pilot at our field TRing a .25 size ultimate wile the wind was blowing it and carrying it down the runway... and yes he was in control.
big planes sook better TR and hovering because the mass and inertia that is involved. small planes have less inertia and will move around quicker than large ones so with a small plane its harder to react in time to keep it looking "smooth"
if you watch the tail surface of a large vs. small model though I think you will see about the same amount of corrections in both.

a 25 sized ultimate I would like to see that. Did he rig it for hovering or was it straight out of the box.
I have a parkflyer edge from radical. Haven't flown it much but others are claiming they hover in there living room. It has the power. Our local field is at 6600' elev. it seems easier to hover when we travel to lower elev.

Man, I will never believe that a 12 year old who can't even speak English can hover a big extra. wild3dfunfly, who cares is you are 12?! maybe you are proud of being the oldest in the pre-school speech class?? is that why you brag about being 12??
