Slyder, what rates(through's) did you use on the 34% for a first flight? CA gives no recommended rates for low or high. I'm not concerned about 3D rates, they are all in what you like. Did you use more up aileron then down? Yes after some thought I built a Columbo! Nice kit! BTW the instructions do [:@] but after you sit back and think it all comes together. I think its going to be a nice plane! I'll post pics soon.

Ronk,
I fly alot of IMAC with my 34% CA. On low rates I use 13° up elevator and 14°-15° down elevator. 20°-25° ailerons up & down. Rudder is about 70% of full deflection.

Where is the horizontal thrust line? It is not in the instructions or on the Columbo Anderson web site. I did e-mail them and the response was "line it up with the cowl"[:@]. There must be a reference point you can go by. Thanks for any help.

Not to sure here either. I set my cowl flush with the hatch and set the engine. My engine is so low on the motor box that the botton two bolthole on my DA are off the bottom. I had to build a stand off of sorts to lower the engine. I measured mine to be 2 1/8" lower than the top of the fuse (the bottom of the hatch).

I believe your correct with 2 1/8" from the fuselage top(from the flat part). Two out of two coming up with the same measurement makes me fill better
. My FPE 6.8 is 7" long, so it barely bolts on the firewall without any mod's(the 6.8 is FPE's new twin). Thanks, Ron

I'm close to covering time. I'll post some pic's before hand. It's a very nice kit but the instructions are terrible[:@]! I'm sure you will have questions. Post them here and I (we) will try to answer them.

Here are some pic's. In picture 2 it looks like there are two servo holes but the bottom is for a rudder servo the top is a servo wire access hole. BTW this is one lite airplane!

Thats what happens when your work area is in the basement. My garage is of limits! For some reason my wife thinks I'll get dust all over, What's she thinking
? It would help if I would put my tools back and quit being a Pack Rat! Oh well its my little world and the family leaves me alone! BTW I'm building a Carden Extra also. Could not make up my mind so I decided to build both. The Carden is wayyyyyyyy more work.

I am at the stage where I need to mount servos in my plane. Where did you guys install the elevator servo on the stab? Center of stab OR towards the inner side? I plan on using JR8611 per elevator half. I also plan to use single 8611 per ailerons installed in the center of the wing. Is a single 8611 good enough for the ailerons? The other option would be to install two 8411's per wing, and use the matchbox etc to match centers etc...too complicated basically...

Another question: Is it wise to use an offset engine mount? I plan on using the DA100 and could buy an SWB offset mount. The CA 34% has an offset firewall already. I can straighten that and use the mount to offset the engine. Might be more accurate!!! Any suggestion?

Yes, they go in the stab. About 2" out from the center-edge of the stab and foreword is far as you want WITHOUT HITTING THE STAB TUBE jest clearing it is about right. As for one 8611, enough torque but its a large control surface, you are better off with two so they don't flutter. If you would use Hitec digitals no match box is needed if you know someone that has a programmer. Mount all the servo's front to back not that sideways thing[:-].

Here are some photo's of the FPE 6.8 (111cc) twin. Starting to line things up for mounting. This engine has 75 Lbs of thrust, that should be close to 3:1 WOW
. It weighs 105 oz with mufflers and ignition.

The advantages of a BME 110 would have to be is it's cap to cap measurement and spark plug placement. The CA Extra's cowl is not as wide as some others in its class. The only disadvantage I could see would be its weight. You may need to add some nose weight but Ryan's Rebel would know better then me, I never had a BME.
