GP 330L why not 3D

Looking at the specs of the GP Extra 330L they appear very close to a plane that is regarded as one of the best 3D planes on the market, that being the Composite ARF 2.6. The length, wing span, wing area, weight, etc., and the fuselage appears identical. Though they are not constructed the same, aerodynamically they seem very close. I do see a big difference with the Cardon and the Columbo Anderson in length, almost 10". Bottom line is why is the Great Planes always called "a nice sport plane but not good for 3D"? What is it about the GP that needs modified or can't it be done and I'm not seeing it.

The gp plane has very small control surfaces. I don't think you could modify the elevators as the hinge line is already very close to the spar tube. The ailerons are very small as well, although they could prolly be modified. The kit is also pretty short compared to other 3d ready planes as you have noticed. I am sure it will make a great imac, or scale flyer, but for all out 3d look for another airframe. I thought about getting one of these as well. As I am sure a lot of others have too, as they are very cheap. I have watched a couple fly, and both looked to fly well, but no 3d was attempted. Also after talking with the guy flying it about it's 3d ability he stated that he would look for another airframe. I am sure it will hover, and TR, but will fall short when you try to harrier, and rolling harrier the plane. Like I said I thought really hard about getting one of these a while back, but I do not think I would be happy with it at all. I still think about it every time I get one of them 50.00 off coupons from tower. as you could buy the kit for 225.00! But I will not be buying one as tempting as it is. Now go back to the CA extra thread, and get you one of them!

Thanks for the info, it is temping at that price. I guess I'm cheap. Most likely I'll get a CA or a Cardon because a plane that will not do what I want it to is worthless and you and up building a new one. A waste of money and time for sure. I'm leaning toward a Cardon, man I hate going with the crowd but I like my planes to look good along with fly well. I need to move soon Cardon is about to say"last call".

It's like the old office saying: no one ever got fired for buying IBM. A Carden is prolly one of the best planes on the market. They are a lot of building but from what I have seen they are pretty straight forward in their build. I would get whatever one you are most comfortable spending, and building. The good news is even if you miss the deadline they will make more. You will just have to wait a while longer!
