I have the same airplane, first, you need to make it tail heavy, move your cg at least 1/2 inch more back. also, you need to give full travel on your rudder and elevator. ailerons also need much more travel as well.
remember, this is a heavier plane for a 3d aircraft. the rudder is not large enough for proper flat spins, making a addition to the top of the rudder will really help. if you want real 3d, you need more surface on your rudder and elevator. also, take out as much weight as possible, light wheels, light batteries, every ounce makes a difference.
all of this will help, but will not be as good as a lighter plane, and you need a good power plant with a large diamater prop with around an average pitch.

chasot will yours waterfall or elevator?i played with props yesterday. im flying a 12x4 now. it didnt really give me any more power but it did smooth out the hover. its a lot easyer now. but the waterfalls are worse.it came in at 5lbs which isnt that bad.the kinfedge got a little better but nothin to right home about. i did move th cg back a ton but i would have to check to see where its at.

da King,

Basically for the servo installation all I did is square off the holes on the back of the fuselage right a the stabs leading edge, glue a piece of ply wood in flush with the fuse sides (with epoxy) and then a straight linkage setup. The linkages are only about 5 inches Long. The rudder servos was mounted on the bottom of the fuse with a mini pull pull setup. I hinged the rudder with those square plastic hinges with the metal pin in them. I remove each individual pin a replace them with one long piece of music wire. I did this so I can interchange different rudders.

I will try to get some pics if you want but it might take a day or so.

Default Somethin' Extra 3D

I just won a Somethin' Extra kit at my club's fun-fly. I don't have a small engine except for an OS .91 Surpass II. Would this be too much engine for this plane (too heavy)? I would mount the elevator & servos in the tail, maybe add an extra wing bay to each wing and increase the control surface dimensions? Or should I sell it and get somethin' better for 3D with the OS .91 4 stroke?

da King,

I will post pictures of my SE but like I said in my last post it will take a day or so till I get them.

I to find hovering difficult in windy conditions. Its taken me about two years to be able to hover adequately. Just keep on moving that C.G. back slowly. You may find the SE to not fly as well at high speeds with an aft C.G. I have not tried spoilerons (is that what its called?) in harriers. I was going to try them out but mother nature is not cooperating.

Gbee, Well you could try your .91 in the SE. You should at least have good vertical . I think I recall some one with a .91 FX in a SE. A nice .50 class engine would be a better choice.

I did maneage to get it to "camp out" in a hover today. I got about 10ft down and chickend out. I did notice that the farther I got the cg the better it hoved but Im still dialing in. This is only the 2nd weekend Ive had it.

Gbee,
The OS will be way too much engine and also too heavy for the Somethin Extra. Get a UCD-3D from Great planes or up to a YS-63 for the Sig.

I'm usually flying right in front of my self so orientation is not a problem. It actually is very easy to see in the air. I covered it sold white so when I screw up in a low hover all I have to do is glue her back together and slap some white monokote on her. That good ol O.S. engine has saved me a couple of times, no incidents yet!

*Cough*

This was my "Prototype" tail, my new SE has a cleaner setup. As you can see with that one, I had to make an emergency move of the 45 cutout so it looks bad.

Side...

My new one also has nearly 90 degrees of down throw... does a spectacualr waterfall! I also saved a little weight on it.

Do any of you guys notice the tail wobble back and forth in flight when you go slow or fast?

I dont notice any wobble in flight. If you do I think its too much rudder or elevator.By the looks of that tail that might be you problem. That tail is HUGE!!!!!!!!Last night I build a cg jig and my cg wasnt as far back as I thought. It was at 3 9/16.Now its 4.5. Ya baby the next flight is gonna be wild.hopefully it will start to waterfall and elevator.

just tryed my aft cg.its horrible in the turn without power but the hover is definitly beter.way more control.elevators are getting better but still wobbly.still wont even think about doing a water fall.flat spin is pretty much the same but i have a few things to do yet. I may have to buy a better 3d machine here soon.
