Default Question for Hroachen

In an earlier thread, you mentioned trying to find a prop for the YS 91FZ that basically has the pulling power of the APC 16x4W without the weight; to make life easier for the engine.

How goes that research? I'm thinking along the lines of a wood 16x5, but before I lay down the cash I want to see if anyone else has some thoughts in this area.

Tried a 15x8; good, but I like the deceleration effect of those fat blades on the downline.

Anyone else feel free to chime in here...

Default Question for Hroachen

I got hold of a Menz-S 15x8, but I haven't had a chance to try it yet, maybe later today. So far, the only prop I've flown has been the 16x4W.

I tried to get a 16x6 Menz, but the distributor didn't have any. I'm going to order a 16x6 Bambula from RCShowcase and hopefully try that next weekend.

I'm not unhappy with the 16x4 APC, but it does seem to unload and over-rev in the air, even at 1/3-1/2 throttle. Makes the YS sound almost like a two-stroke, you can't hear the exhaust note over the prop sound.

Default Question for Hroachen

Yup. I'm getting 9300 top end on the ground, and logic says it's doing perhaps another 3-400 tops in the air.

But you're right, it sounds like it is really winding up.

Zinger is the only brand I could find with a 16x5. Lots of 16x6 woodies around, but I'm thinking that would be too much???

Keep me advised, please.

Default Question for Hroachen

I got a bit of flying in this afternoon, and I put the 15x8 Menz-S on for the last flight.

I didn't get a tach reading on it, full throttle on the ground sounded comparable to the 16x4W APC, but until I put a tach to it I can't be sure.

In the air, the plane was somewhat faster than with the 16x4W, but not excessively fast. The sound was definitely more pleasant.

Hovering on the 15x8 was at a slightly lower throttle setting than with the 16x4W (surprised me), but full power vertical climbs from the hover were a bit different... with the 16x4W, it would start climbing almost instantly upon application of full throttle, with the 15x8 it felt a bit lazy, but then accelerated to a higher speed going up.

Can't wait to try a 16x6 on it.

Default Question for Hroachen

Well, I don't hover my airplanes (got helicopters if I feel that need<G>), but I'm interested in what is best overall.

I REALLY like the braking effect of that APC 16x4W boat paddle; but if it is allowing the YS to overspeed at high throttle settings, that's not good.

I'm flying a Kangke CAP 232 Sport. You're flying the new UCD from The Empire, right? I'm pretty sure that is a lighter airplane. I wonder how much of a difference that makes to the engine???

My UCD is probably a bit lighter than the your Cap, but I'd bet my wing is thicker and slower in level flight.

I can't comment on the braking effect differences on downlines yet, it was getting dark when I put the 15x8 on and I only took it up for a minute or so. Hopefully I can get some quality time in this weekend and with any luck I'll have a 16x6 along to try as well.

I'm guessing that the 16x6 will be just what i'm looking for. I don't think the YS91 will have any problem swinging it.

Guess what I found in the "extras" box? An APC 16x6.

If it will stop raining, I'll try that puppy out this week-end.

What 16x6 do you have?

At the moment, I don't have a 16x6. I'm going to try to get a Menz-s or Bambula 16x6 if I can find one.

RCShowcase had the Bambula 16x6 in stock, I should have it in hand by Friday.

Okay, I give up.

What's a Bambula? Never heard of those...

Interesting; but you would think somebody building a "cutting edge" prop would know how to spell "Chord"...

Anyway, I'll be keenly interested in hearing how it does. I'll let you know regarding the APC 16x6.

Default Question for Hroachen

Does anyone know if APC makes a 16-5 prop? I think this would be the perfect prop for the YS on the UCD 3D. They don't list it on their site but at the same time they don't list the 16-4 as an option and we know they are available.

Thanks..........Mark

Default Question for Hroachen

Put three flights on the APC 16x6 today. She was turning 8700 static. Great acceleration, good vertical. From level flight to firewalled throttle and ninety degree pull-up, she runs out of grunt in 500 feet or so. Certainly not "unlimited", but not shabby. Zoom climbs are almost out-of-sight before she falls off.

Take-offs are like, right NOW, with surprisingly little P-factor. I had to hold very little rudder.

As feared, I lost that wonderful airbrake effect, but she does slow down quickly enough for short approaches, etc. She doesn't bleed off speed on the down-line as quickly as before, so I'll just have to live with that.

But no signs (or sounds) of overspeeding. The YS was happy, so I'm happy.

How did that wood prop work out?

I had to work today, but I'm going to the field tomorrow if the weather cooperates. I have the Bambula 16x6 to try, along with the 15x8 Menz and the 16x4W Apc's. Also brought home a more convenient tach than what I've been using, so I should have RPM numbers to report tomorrow.

I dont have this engine, but I just 'discovered' Master Airscrew wood schimitar props. They things are sooooo light and spin up on my saito 1.80 instantly. Much faster than other props (light weight?). Next time your at your LHS pick up any plastic prop, then a wood schimitar prop and you'll see. On my engine this made idle to wot seem just about instantaneous.

But does it affect your idle? One of the things about heavy props on four strokes is the flywheel effect that contributes to a low idle.

Mark, I just found a pamphlet from APC that was in the package when I ordered the 16x4W.

They do NOT make a 16x5. It goes from 16x4W to 16x6.

I just got back from flying. The Bambula 16x6 is one sweet prop. I got a peak of 8600 on the ground, backed off to 8400 to fly. The plane hovered at less than half throttle, accelerated vertical from the hover (but with a bit less authority than the APC 16x4W), had better speed than the 16x4W (but less than the 15x8 Menz-s), and good braking on the downlines.

I got almost the exact same RPM readings on the 15x8 Menz and the 16x6 Bambula. 8600-8650 static, backed off a few clicks to 8400 to fly. Neither of these props sounded like they were overspeeding in flight, just a nice happy sounding exhaust note.

I'm still going to try to get a 16x6 Menz-s, just to compare it to the Bambula. I've got a 16x6 Zinger in the shop, I might give that a shot too for the heck of it. I should probably try a 16x6 APC as well.

Where are you guys getting your 16-4W APC prop from? My LHS had one on order for me for a few weeks. He orders from both Great Planes and Horizon. Are you getting them mail order?

Thanks.............Mark

I work in a hobby shop, I ordered the 16x4W APC from Horizon.

If your local shop deals with Horizon, he can get them. He might need to update his Horizon Catalog (if he's using a PC to do his ordering). The 16x4W didn't show up until pretty recently.

I'm off tomorrow, but I'll be working Tuesday. If you need, PM or email me and I can get you the part number if your local shop doesn't use a computer for ordering.

I ordered my 16x4W direct from APC.

So the lightweight wood prop didn't turn up any faster than the composite? Interesting. I may try one.

I noted some idle inconsistencies Saturday, but I think I'm a bit rich on the low end. I'm pleased overall with the APC 16x6.

Thanks David, Mine finally came in and I picked it up this Monday after our club meeting. I can't beleive how thin it is. I'm going to give it a try this weekend (calling for 63 degree temps on Sunday....not bad for the northeast!)

Thanks...........Mark
