I am 14 years old and have been flying for about 6 years. I am just starting to get into 3D flying and I built a 40 size Extra by Great Planes. I have finished it and flown my dad test flew it for the first time on Sunday. I put a 46 LA on it but it doesn't seem to have the power to do the 3D manouvers. I was wondering what you guys were putting on it for power. If you could give me your input that would be great. Thanks Greg.

Put it on a good scale and see what it weighs. If it weighs 5.75 to 6.5 pounds with the LA46 you want at least a SA82 or YS63 or a .91 two stroke for "get out of trouble power" while you are perfecting your maneuvers.
Not sure how stable the Great Planes 40 EXTRA is for learning 3D--you may have your hands full.
Pl edge 540 and Fliton 330 are the best scale like 40 sized 3D planes out there, but still not as good as a profile or foamy for learning the tricks.

There was one of these at the field yesterday & we put it on the scale. It was 7pounds 4oz with a .61FX in it. I think the wing area on this bird is only about 5XX? Also, the control surfaces were not suitable for stalled flight (3D maneuvers)--to small.
Even if your plane is a pound less and it is powered adequately you are not going to have a very 3D capable plane.
The plane, however is a good flier and will be a lot of fun for sporting around or practicing IMAC sequences.
If you want something to build that will fly 3D with a .40 put together a 3D capable SPAD. You will be happy you did when you dork it in while learning.
