RE: Goldberg YAK 54 - 77"
Aerobob,
I am seriously considering this plane. When you say fully aerobatic with the OS 1.60 do you mean it will do 3D - can it hover, etc? Or do you think I would need something bigger like a Moki 2.10.
My biggest plane so far is a UCD 46 with an OS SX50-H Helicopter engine. I really like OS engines. This plane appeals to me because of looks and cost - I am trying to stay out of the expensive gas engines and still get a relatively large YAK.

Can't really say, although I can tell you with the OS 1.60 it will be around 12 lbs, maybe little more.... and has a heck of a lotta wing for that weight. Honestly, I think it would be an outstanding performing airplane on the OS, almost did that myself. Will it hover, and pull out? I can't see how it wouldn't at that weight, but since I have not personally flown it with that combo, I won't say. Only speculation.... but I think it would be pretty darn good.

Using the weights from the Horizon website on the 220, and adding in the H9 Alum motor mount that would be needed, it's about 20 less than my 14.9 lbs.... comes up to 13.75 or so. Which makes my earlier OS 1.60 estimate low, too - sorry 'bout that. The 220 setup v.s. the OS 1.60 makes the Saito about 2 or 3 oz. heavier than a comparable OS 1.60 setup ( Bisson muffler and H9 mount and Perry pump on the OS).

Do any of the guys that put the Saito 220 on this plane have a RTF weight yet?

I have an OS 1.60 on mine, no chance of flying it anytime soon thanks to the weather. I have run the motor a few times tho and it pulls like a horse with the APC 18x6w. I will try and weigh it tonight.

RE: Goldberg YAK 54 - 77"
I'm still working on my radio install. I'm using JR 8411SA digital servos and a 537 digital for throttle. 2 servos per aileron. The 8411SA's have 155 oz/in torque each. I know it's overkill, but it's one less thing to worry about. I've been looking at other Yak models and it's interesting that the Aeroworks Yak is made for one server per aileron and it's an 85" model. And Aerobob has been tearing around with only one per on his with no problem it sounds. Sure looks like 2 per is unnecessary.
I used a MUCH nicer FRP motor mount than what the kit came with. The 2.20 looks like it would twist the stock one in half. My replacement is much beefier and I used heavier mounting bolts too. I'm giving up on 3 blade props. I can't find any that are the correct pitch and the Graupner won't cut it as scalebirdman so eloquently pointed out to me.
e28m5, that's a nice weight for this plane I think. Did you have to add any weight for balance?
flying crazy, I used the exact length extensions that they specify in the manual; 24" for elevator and 12" + Y harness for ailerons. They should be just about perfect.
I'll have a weight on mine in the next couple of days. I think it's gonna' be a little while before I get to fly her though, snow forecast for this weekend.

Are any of you guys that are using the Saito 220 adding the Saito fuel pump and larger carb to the engine?

RE: Goldberg YAK 54 - 77"
I did not add any weight - the battery is zip-tied to the front of the firewall next to the motormount, and it seems to balance at manual spec location; fuel tank is in stock location. I don't doubt that someone could get it to come out lighter, I didn't do anything special to lighten it. You would probably drop about 4 oz by removing 2 of the aileron servos, which I might do at some point with better servos. So my guess is someone could get it to weigh 13-13.5 lbs w/ an OS1.60, esp if you used carbon landing gear and wing tubes. Maybe even sub 13lbs. I will add that the thing hasn't flown yet, so we will see how it is really balanced then (at least a few weeks from now).

RE: Goldberg YAK 54 - 77"
I looked at this plane today at a LHS I stopped at to pickup a few things. I have to say it looks really nice. I allready made a post how it just bumms me out about Carl Goldbergs customer rep. problem. And that I wouldn't want to buy one just for that, but after looking at it I sure have different fillings. It was hard to walkout of the store without it.
OK if I take the plunge.....[>:]....... can I get this thing close to 12.5lbs with some lighting measures. CF gear, CF push rod linkage, light weight foam tires. CF spinner. I got both Saito 180 and a OS 160 I could put in it. Personally, if it can't get in the mid to high 12's with these 2 engines I think it will fly OK but it won't 3D well. (as in hover / with any kind of pull out).
I keep trying to talk myself out of getting this plane but after looking at it. SOMEBODY TELL ME HOW CRUMMY IT FLY'S ...PLEASE !!!

I can relate; this will be an UGLY April for us, too.... so that makes the planes even MORE important due to their intrinsic therapeutic effects. The worse the IRS, the more "therapy" we'll need....

Of all the Yakkers, I'm probably most addicted.... and I'm *passing* on the GP simply because it is S-H-O-R-T.....like 68"... the Goldberg is almost 73", and that is a LOT of difference in pitch stability/smoothness. IMO - get the Goldberg...

RE: Goldberg YAK 54 - 77"
Got my GB Yak in a few days ago. FEDEX crunched the cowl but everything else is okay. They have all ready settled the claim and I've got a new cowl on the way! ( Thanks FEDEX!). I have not experienced any of the problems with any of the components, i.e warped surfaces. I have however reinforced the firewall as I have installed a BRILELLI 46cc Poulan conversion. Firewall to back of spinner plate is 6 1/2". The tailfeathers fit like the stones on the pyramids! (no gaps). I am planning on sealing all controll gaps on elevator and ailerons. I have two pilots going in, "Boris & Natasha" from the Rocky and Bullwinkle cartoon series. I hope to have her flight ready by around the 1st of March.

RE: Goldberg YAK 54 - 77"
I'm just finishing up the last two servos and the radio will be all installed. I thought my elevators were perfect, but now that I have the servos and linkages installed I can see I have the same problem that everyone else is seeing. Like we discussed earlier, it looks like they used one jig to make both halves so the top of one side is the bottom of the other or something. All you can do is adjust the linkages and line them up. I think unless you know it's there you would never notice it. I've gotta' say, this is a nice plane. If we weren't in the middle of a 8-12" snow storm, I'd probably be out flying it tomorrow. Thanks to everyone who came up with good solutions to the little quirks in this kit that helped me breeze through the build. I'll have a weight and some pictures soon.

hey dave - i though i had problem like that . it seem to be that the elev's were twisted - i put some rev. twist on them & went over the top & bottom with the heat gun . held them till they cooled . they came out a-ok . ( hint - clamp the conter balance to the stab. & then you can push up or down at opose, cornner while you use the heat gun . hold it tight till it cools. ) bill wrcflyer
