Default Engine trouble!

I didn't know where to post this..... so here it is

I been running an O.S. 61 now for quite sometime. Lately It takes about 5 mins to get the damn thing running every time i need to start it! Its tuned good and runs great once started but starting it is hell. I've tryed changing glowplugs but no good...... what else may cause this!

thanks

Chad

Chad,

I am not sure how old is your engine. Since the engine runs fine without heating up after starting, I assume the piston and liner still keeps the compression very well.

When I have problem starting an engine, I check following.

Glow plug if old & glow driver.

Fuel line including blowing air in to the pressure line to make sure the fuel is flowing well to carb.

Remove needle valve and make sure the carb does not have anything that prevent fuel flow problem. ( I carry canned compressed air with me)

Fuel tank check up. make sure the clunk is not stuck or plugged up. (Never happend to me since I use 3 fuel filters. one inside fuel jug, one on fuel pump, one on fuel line to carb). It is still possible to have something inside the fuel tank.

If you use dubro silicone inside your fuel jug or can, make sure that thing does not get hard. (happened to me while using higher nitro fuel) The blue fuel line got really stiff and brittle.
I didn't see this because, I never opened to fill the jug. I used pump to fill it. My fault.

Which version of 61 is it? If all the above are clean, remove & dis assemble the carb to clean. check for any build-up near the fuel nozzle.

Hope you nail the problem out.
Good Luck

choke the engine till it's wet before starting,if you're already doing this then check, lines, tank for fuel line problem, might try new fuel,PatternFlyer had some good advice, luck.

There's a whole Engines Discussion group here on RCU. That's where you should post this type of stuff...

What's your procedure for starting the engine? Are you like many/most people, just plug the glow ignitor on and crank crank crank crank crank crank crank away with the electric starter? You're making an easy task very difficult, and wearing the engine out at the same time.

You have to prime the engine every time you start it. First, open the throttle to full, and place your thumb over the carburetor. Turn the engine over slowly by hand until all the bubbles are worked out of the fuel line, then turn the engine over three more times. Close the carburetor to idle, and turn the engine over three more times. Apply the glow ignitor and bump the engine with the starter. If the engine is already properly adjusted, it should fire right up.

You may be having trouble keeping fuel in the fuel line. If the fuel just drops back into the tank every time you turn the engine over, you have a bad air leak in your fuel system. There is no way to visually check your fuel system; even if it "looks fine" there may be invisible pinholes in the lines or a bad connection somewhere.

Thanks! I will check all of those tommorow. And yes I am the average person who pops the glow starter on and cranks it! I will try the starting mentioned in the future. .....its an OS.61 SX-H

Thanks

Hi Chad,
Your starting problem seems elementary.
When any engine does not start normal there can be only two
problems.
1> Ignition, remove the plug and insert it in the glow driver.
The plug element must glow bright red.
2> Fuel flow>Rest the craft and engine so the carb venturi is
facing horizontal. Plug the venturi opening (with finger?) and
crank engine over several times. Examine the finger
it should be
fuel soaked and there should be evidence of fuel in the carb.
Then use normal starting prodedure. If engine does not run then
there is trouble in the engine itself. First check all attachment screws, especially the back cover.
Compression>even with minimum compression:with a starter if
all the above checked OK the engine should at least start.
The fuel check described assures two things are in order. First
is the fuel system and second is the engine has no leaks and
compression is adequet.
Good luck!

Hey .. thanks for the replys. I got the engine running great now. it starts right up. I hadn't run the engine in a few months... Running it on full throttle with no glow plug and then dropping it to idle did the trick.

Thanks

Hi bdxhad, after each flying day you should disconnect or plug off the fuel line to the carb, then connect the igniter to the glow plug and spin over the engine until all the fuel is burned from the engine, after the fuel is out of the engine then add a dozen or more drops of some type of afterrun oil,if not the engine will gum up and the bearings will rust, the engine will have a short life.
