I have a Saito 180 and it runs great. I use a kline regulator because the tank is high in relation to the engine and you may have a siphoning problem. The kline fixes the issues, a perry pump will not, and I am not sure on a YS pump.

I never had a siphoning problem running my saito's on this plane. The Kline reg is another way to go, but, is also something else to buy and set up. If I had it to do over I would go with the YS. This year I moved on to the QQ 86" with a DA50 ....AUSOME!!!! I don't think that I will be returning to glow. EMVIN

What size Saito were you useing.? I assume no issue on fuel draw?
You are correct in that its more to buy and more things to potentially fail. There is however nothing to setup or adjust with the kline.

I used both the Saito 180 and 220. The 180 definitly needed a pump it was getting hot and it was more noticeable on uplines. The 220 I ran without it it seemed to do OK. Both engines did very well.

With the 180 I ran a Pro Zinger 18X6 and also a Xoar 18X6 using Morgan Cool Power 30% heli fuel. RPM's were at 8500+/-. At 8500 rpm you will have great performance. The big Saitos love the high nitro. Try to buy it by the case its expensive. ....EMVIN....

If I go with the YS, do I have to buy that custom made muffler on Qui Que's website or will it accept the aftermarkets? Just looking for an easy exhaust exit.
Any photos?

Stock exaust. You need to open up the cowl for air flow anyway. The exit should be about two times the size as the entry.

I'm getting so many great suggestions, I have more questions. Someone mentioned to me that if I have digital servos (HiTec), that if I go with a 6v battery I need a regulator. IS this true? If so, can you provide a link to one. I was going to do a 1,500 6v. IS this necessary?
Also, someone else told me the YS engines vibrate. Should I get a aftermarket vibration proof motor mount or is the one that comes with the kit OK..
Thanks for your help guys.

No regulator needed with 6 volts. My saito was tail heavy so instead of adding lead, I use 2 6 volt 2500 mah batteries in parallel using 2 switches. Plug one into the battery slot and the other into an open channel. Added redundancy and piece of mind.
I also use the dubro vibration mounts.

Michael, all engines of that size are going to have vibration. I ran the saito 220 and 180 on this plane without a soft mount for about a year or 200+/- flights with no problem. However, a soft mount is not a bad idea anyway. As far as the 6v I was running a 6V 2700ma nmh and used a 6v regulator. Remember when fully charged the battery is well above 6v. its a saftey measure.
On my new 86" yak I am running the same set up as dszabo 2 batteries, 2 switches and 2 regulators. Just be aware of the weight on your plane. this one performs its best below 12lbs. I would suggest 2 -1000 ma lion for your set up. ....EMVIN....

I think I am really interested in just one battery. Can anyone provide a link to a good 6v battery with a sufficient Mamp...

Also. I am a little unclear about this whole regulator thing. If my servos have two torque ratings, one with 4.8v and one with 6v why the regulator? Can't the servo handle it?
A lot of people are bad mouthing the YS at the field. Am I going to regret going with the YS?
Thanks everyone..

Regulators are for keeping a steady flow that does not exceed 6V more than 6v can cause jittery servos and can do damage to your reciever.
As far as YS engines go they are considered the best in most circles. Personally I have never heard a bad thing about them. I do not own one, but know many people that do. All of them love there YS. If I were to buy another four stroke Glo it would be a YS, however this year I discovered gas ( DA-50 ) and wont be turning back.
One thing about this hobby ask one question and get ten different answers. Gather as much info as you can and then try to make a dillegent decision based on that.

Hey YakPak long time no type. What kind of spinner, Propeller and battery?
I used a truturn 3" with the light / or cut out back plate and a wood prop. Also a 2700 Nmh 6v. HITEC 5945'S all around. Weighed in at 11lb11oz
If you were to use a Lion battery there would be a nice weight savings right there that alone might get you under 12lb. Do you have lightweight tires? and maybe loose the wheel pants.

Hi Emvin,
Good suggestions as always.
18 X 6 Meljzik
3 1/4" tru turn spinner
Hitec 645'3 all around except throttle servo
There are three culprits adding to my weight problem,
MPI on-board ignition, although it is only a 1 cell ni-cad, it does add weight
perry pump, not that much weight but every ounce counts
And the main culprit, my engine is mounted sideways, so to offset that weight I moved everything to the other side as best I could, however even with that it did not balance side to side so added the L... word on the wing tip, not much, just enough to balance
Anyway at 12 lbs, 4 oz, I still want to get some weight out of it, however I don't want to part with my pump or mpi system, so battery it is.
I have a 1000mah ni-cad, 6V 5 cell battery, it weighs in at 5.29 oz if I can shave off an ounce or two there it would be very helpful.
Where did you get your battery from I want to check out the spec's, also I am a little concerned about only having 1000mah
never thought of tires, that's a good idea, I will check that out at my LHS
so this winter I'm going to assemble the 86" QQ with a DA50, yippee!
Sounds like you are enjoying your QQ planes and having a good summer
Cheers
Yak Pak

RE: Quique Somenzini YAK-54S 73"
YAKPAK, I purchased that battery about two years ago at my LHS. I dont have much info on it other that its a 2700Ma NMH. If your interested in loosing weight consider Lithium Ion's they are about half the weight +/- of a nicad for the same power.
As far as the 86" goes your going to be blown away!!! That airplane is Ausome!! There is a book out called Gas Engines Giant Planes (from dons hobby shop) get it. When moving up to "Giant Scale" there is a learning curve. This will help alot. Dont make the same mistake that I made. I'm on my second 86". I lost the first one after just four Flights. It was either the battery or regulator that failed. The plane baisiclly locked up and I watched it go down. This time I am running a redundant system with two batteries, two switches, two regulators and a Spektrum raido. It should Maiden this week....
Good Luck....

If every ounce counts:
[ul][*]Use Troy built 2600 mah Lithium-ion battery w/6volt regulator, total weight 4.1 oz. [*]Use Great Planes plastic spinner with lightened aluminum backplate.[*]Use servos that weigh 1.60 oz instead heavy 2.11 oz.[*]Use no on-board glow battery if the engine is a side mounted OS 1.60 (keep the pump).[*]Use a wooden prop. (It may not be worth it if you have to sacrifice thrust.)

RE: Quique Somenzini YAK-54S 73"
Thanks guys, great sugestions.
Emvin, I noticed significant drain on my rx pak, upon further inspection I had wired the rx battery to the regulator, to the switch, to the rx. That will cause the rx battery to slowly drain.
I have rewired it from the rx battery to the switch to the regulator to the rx.
I am not sure if this would explain your 86" air to ground incident, however thought I better mention it .
I'm going to buy that book, thanks for the reccomendation.
Cheers

RE: Quique Somenzini YAK-54S 73"
I just spoke to Hitec. They told me a regulator is not really necessary if you use 6v batteries.. ie. NCad... Only for Lith Ion...
I have been all over the internet trying to find a good 1500-2500m amp battery and can't.
Any suggestions.
Thanks

A fully charged 6v NMH is over 7v. That can do damage to your reciever.
Here is a link for batteries. There is alot of information as well. http://radicalrc.secure-mall.com/shop/
