I use a drum sanding bit on a dremel tool. It's a fast and clean cut, plus you dont have to worry about the bit grabbing the material and skipping across the cowl.

Ditto... I use the same thing.... I also use my FiberFinish to protect the edge and stiffen the openings... it helps prevents cracking/paint chipping as well as looking slick...

It's a product I sell that you use as combing on the cut edges of fiberglass... it's $9 for 5 feet shipped (enough for about 3 cowls) In my pics above you can see it alond the edges of the cutouts...
Contact me via PM if you'd like some..

I just finished my Yak with a Saito 180 and I need an opinion on how much cowl to cut for engine cooling. Here are some pics of what I have so far
Please post your thoughts

Sorry... it's molded along with the cowl...

Hey that black piece on the front of the cowl, does it come factory installed or did you have to glue it? Just wondering if I can get one for another yac.

You have WAY plenty Dave... perhaps 2:1 which is very good

The black section is how the cowl is shipped. I cut out the section infront of the engine.
Still no comments if I have enough exit area!

Well. I'm a little late in the game. I just bought the Purple and Yellow YAK. I hope I can ask building Qs and tip Qs when I get started....
Thanks
Looks like I am going to have a lot of fun.

RE: Quique Somenzini YAK-54S 73"
Hi guys,
I need your professional help, please!
I ordered also a QQ Yak 54 73" for my 35ccm MVVS gas.
After reading all the threads and calculating a lot i'm now afraid that:
1. the plane will be too heavy as it will turn out at approx. 12.8 lbs (max 12.5")
2. the distance between the beginning of the backplatemount and propellerhub is too big as it will be 5.9" (should be 5.5")
3. the construction will not hold the vibration and the weight of MVVS
4. i will have problems to get the c.g..
5. i won't get the expected aircraft performance (vertical acceleration, starting with 3D, slow speed)
Do you think that setup will work?
I'm not a championship or tournament flyer, but i like it hot and vertical accelerations
with maybe some 3D acrobatics.
My modifications i would do with this set-up is:
1. reinforce the firewall
2. reinforce the gearmounting
3. maybe using another gear or bigger wheels, because of the 19x8 or 10 prop (clearance)
4. sliding the cowling forward (about 1/4") for better fitting, because of the long engine
Has anyone flown this plane at this or similar configuration and did some of the above mentioned modifications and can help me?
Greetings from Austria
CAT
P.S. I'm sorry, if there are some gramatical mistakes above, as english is not my motherlanguage

RE: Quique Somenzini YAK-54S 73"
Just getting started and already have a question...
STEP 2:
"Add four pieces of balsa strips inside the fuse.." on the foam? HUH? Where? Does anyone have a better picture than in the instructions? Thanks
Then it says "These areas should be covered with small plywood pieces? 2nd huh? Where exactly? What are they talking about? Do I have to buy this plywood?

I would definately add some reinforcement to the firewall. I had a deadstick landing last week with my yak and the prop hit the ground and drove the engine (Saito 180) right through the firewall. The head of the engine was rotated up against the fuel tank but surprisingly the 18 x 6 zinger prop was not even cracked. I have had many planes survive with no damage on much harder landings

Wow, that's a lot of damage. I wonder if the prop had of given way you would have less damage. I have the Saito 180 on another Yak.
I use 30% with a perry pump and an MPI on-board glow ignition system. Do anything special with your Saito?

I would go with a ZDZ 40F3A. Same wieght as a 26cc gasser! but almost twice the cc's....
Has anyone heard about when QQ. will release the Gen II for the 73" Yak?
I was thinking about the 73" but I am aware that QQ will be releasing a updated one soon
Thanks

I only use a cline regulator, alot less fuss than a pump.
I think if the prop broke I would have had less damage. The fire wall is way too thin IMO. In all the crashes I have had or seen the fire wall always comes out of the fuselage with minimal damage attache to the engine mounts. I have never seen one blow apart like this one.

ThatĀ“s the reason , why i think a lighter Motor is better than the heavy MVVS 2.15 gasser.
I also own a SuperTigre ST 2300 which has 1.4 cuinch and the same performance like a OS 160.
The thing is, I`ve the MVVS 2.15 and ST 2300 at home, so I donĀ“t want to by a new engine, as this both are running perfect.
But iĀ“ll reinforce the firewall anyway, also when using the ST 2300.
