I'm going to be competing in freestyle for the first time soon, and i want everyone to post the manouvres they believe will get me the best scores, ( ie the most impressive looking). i figured torque rolls for sure.... it's still a very new plane, but if i feel comfortable i will blender. what else?
cheers

nice, I like the spin landing at the end.
I'm still new at 3D, so I can't offer any advice other than what most impresses me. The low rolling harriers & knife edge spin to blender are my personal favorites. I can do the knife edge spin to blender, but I'm a long ways from the rolling harriers.

keep it smoooooth!! thats the main thing. do lots of techincal rolling and switching roll loops circuits and low rolls. Do splatters of 3D too. there is mroe to 3D than just hovering, keep it to a minimum and if you do decide to hover, make it 20 secs maximum, and torque roll it

All i can say is ditto. Don't just go out and bang the sticks away. Carefully plan and rehearse what to do.
It takes a while to figure out but you will realise its not just one manuver that you need to nail, its the whole flight as a whole.
It has to be perfectly presented with a reasonnable proportion of precision 3D and pattern, with all manuvers exiting at same height and centre manuvers bang in the centre. Be as smooth as possible- Judges like seeing 'effortless flying' where no mistakes are evident, and the plane looks like it is on rails. Once you can do this then you can start throwing in a couple of really hard manuvers that will set you apart from the competition. (like a rolling harrier square vertical eight)

If you dont have the Tuscon Aerobatic Shootout video...get it. Freestyle requires a definite change of pace. You must have slow, graceful ballet-like maneuvers as well as a snappy, wild, energetic routine....all in the same 4 minutes.
I dont think Torque Rolls or Hovering is all that impressive. Rolling Harriers, high-speed knife edge, and slow rolls ...all done down on the deck are impressive. Inverted Flat spins and Inverted Elevators are cool. Point-Rolls, Snap Rolls to the beat of the music ...scores big points with judges.

If your only "considering" a blender then this will be a good learning experience for you. At one time I wanted to compete but it just wasnt my cup of tea. I still love to do precision but since I work so much time limits me to flying about once a month now, so I just do whats fun. The key in your first competition is to just go out and work the butterflys out and watch and learn b/c in the end its all about having fun.

Freestyle flying is not just banging the sticks around. It is all about smooth flying that will get you high scores. Yea every now and then have something in there banging but not all the time. I tell ya I really like how Jason Noll flies in a BIG box.

wicked thanks guys. this is a very low key comp (inter club comp, flying the scale aeros, but there is a freestyle element.) i will be test flying the plane for the first time on sunday, the comp is on april 8. I'm seeing that smoothness far outweighs technical difficulty. this is what i had assumed. thanks heaps for you help, and i will let you know how it goes.

Seriously mate, try chucking in a few of [link=http://www.bmfa.org/achievement/files/CFWCombIssue1.pdf]these[/link]and you'll do just fine, the climbing knife edge snap looks a lot more impressive than it sounds

Smoothness is THE MOST difficult to attain.

I can do everything Quique does but if you compare my flying to his, its night and day...its all about being smooth and transitioning from precision to 3D without anybody knowing.
Practice rolls the length of the field, rolling figure 8's, rolling loops, harrier rolling circles, point roll with the music (dont miss your ques), a blender is fine but transition from inverted flat spin back to upright flight spin. COMBOS play big....maybe a nice roll circle (one roll one circle) and on the end of the roll, right in center of the box pop it into a wall, tail slide, torque roll, power up to a series of waterfalls back to inverted harrier firgure 8. They love that kinda stuff. BUT......keep it smoooooooothhhh

ha ha okay guys the comp was on saturday. in my typical disorginisation, i managed to put off any real flying till THAT DAY. so i had flown it twice, never landed it (both landings our local "test pilot" landed it, (though i didn't want him too the second time... the engine went dead stick, he snatched the TX and broke the gear on landing!!!)
so anyway i was test flying in the schedule, light slightly underpowered aircraft (40 sized) on a very windy day... NOT GOOD!! snapped up 5th. was fine till downwind loop time.... whoopsss
anyway i got 2nd in the freestyle. 4th flight on the plane, flys good, still playing with the rates on the day... flew excellent did some knife edge.. to windy for 3D.. some nice loops, vertical manouvres, a rolling cicle, but it didn't really come off, not cough throw.
anwyay thanks guys

Hey Richo,
I was there on Sat. Sorry we didn't meet. I flew the OS 120AX powered ugly blue & pink CMPro Giles. I should have read this post before the comp and put together a freestyle routine. I just made it up as I went (I'll never do that again). I suck at freestyle. I mostly fly precision. Lately I've been getting into 3D and having a great time........if only I could combine the two smoothly. At least I've got something to aim for.......youcan never get bored in this hobby.
Cheers,
Iain
