Hello,
I have a Dave Patrick Ultimate with a YS 1.20 fz engine. I have been running 15% coolpower fuel and using an APC 16x8 prop. I have found the plane to be just a little too heavy to torque roll and hover regularly. Sure, I can pull it off every once in a while, but there is no reserve power on hand to bail out or accelerate vertically.
I recently installed an OS 1.60, but the cold weather prevents me from test flying. I am not certain that the two stroke torque curve will work well for torque rolling this plane, but I sure hope so.
Now I am looking for a perfect plane to fly 3D with the YS 1.20 fz. I know I will need to find a lightweight plane, which is hard to do in the 1/4 scale range.
I have heard that the Sig Cap 231 EX is a good choice, but I want to be certain before handing over $350 plus tax. I was disappointed with the performance of the Ultimate with this engine. I love the YS fz, but just need to find a better plane.
I want to fly 3D without reserve. I hope to do low torque rolls, rudder touches, blenders, elevators, harriers, etc. I can pogo a Morris Knife across the field touching the rudder from a hover with no problem, so I think it is time to move on to a larger, more stable platform.
Thanks,
Tyler

I just saw where world models is coming out with a new 3d style airplane for the holidays. It looks kind of like a giant pizzaz if you ask me. But it has plug in wings and all the great features that is with most all of world models airplanes. I am pretty sure that i saw where they were only wanting 250.00 for it too, so that is a good price, and your 120 would be absolutley perfect for it....

can you direct me to more information on this new plane?
I may be looking for more of a scale replica: Extra, cap, edge, etc, but not cut in stone on this.
Thanks for the help,
Tyler

Tyler,
Where in Illinois are you?
Your in a tough situation as there arent many great 3D planes for the 1.60.
Take a look at the lanier 1.20 Edge. I flew a friends all summer with a 1.60 in it and it would 3d.
If I were to buy one for that motor I would try to save as much weight as possible on it.
His 3D'ed OK.

I know there is a two page advertisement of the airplane in the new January Issue of Model Airplane News, It tells you pretty much anything you would want to know about the plane.
If you are looking for a scale sport plane a good combo for your 120 would be aeroworks new 90 size edge 540, it is priced at about the same as the world models plane and is of course typical aeroworks quality...GREAT.......
Let me know if I can be of any more assistance

the plane being mentioned in the two page ad in model airplane news is call the "fun world 3d" by world models. as far as the plane type, it looks like a 120 size "somethin' extra" with a thick funfly type wing. it should be a great plane with the ys 120fz.
as for the aeroworks edge mentioned in the previous post, i have been flying an aeroworks 90 size edge with a ys 120fz for about 6 months. its a great combo, with a few mods. such as, two elevator servos in the tail (to help with balance and for better control), tank on the cg (for no trim change during flight), carbon wing tube (weight savings), fiberglass landing gear (weight savings and better landings) and lastly high quailty servos. i'm actually considering buying a second one.
there is a thread with over 1000 replies, its hard to read through it all, but very worth it.
if you need some more info, feel free to email me.

Hi Wayne,
I fly at Kankakee, IL.
Has anyone seen this new plane fly? It appears lightweight, but then again, so does the Sig Cap 231ex.
How does the Sig Cap 231 ex fly with the YS 120fz?
Am I just dreaming when hoping to 3d a 1.20 sized plane with the engines I have available? Do I really have to move up to 30% and gasoline?

I would suggest the Goldberg or World Models Ultimate biplane. I have seen quite a few of those planes 3D with the YS 120. I have a goldberg Ultimate with a Saito 180 and it is a 3D machine. It will perform much better than I can, but I know that it is capable. I don't think your ys will give you what you are looking for in the 72" aerobats. Just not enough motor. If you could make it fit, it would be a ball of fire in the Ucando3D from Great Planes. Good luck!

I bought a used isg cap from a fellow who had a ys 120 in it. I think it was the fz model as well but not sure. He switched it out for a moki 180 because the 120 just didn't have enough for serious 3-D! Love my edge is right the goldberg ultimate is a ball of fire with a ys 120 in it, as is his with the saito 180! The world models 120 size extra 300 is a great plane but not a good 3-d platform. But a 120 will fly the crap out of them!

Wayne's right, there are not a lot of GOOD 3D planes in this size category that are scale. I'd seriously look at the Fun World 3D for your YS 120, have ablast and then try a scale plane with at least a 90"+ wing with a gas motor. Once you get there, there's no turning back.

What about the Extreme Flight 68" Yak? Doesnt look like it's available yet but it should go ballistic with a 1.20....
Wayne might know more about this....I think he saw/flew the prototype. Would a YS 1.40 Sport be too much for this Yak?

Aviti,
I have flown the 68" Yak prototype. This one had a YS 1.10 in it and it was completely ballistic with that motor.
The key to any aerobatic / 3D plane is to keep the wing loading as low as possible.
Sure, a larger motor will haul more weight but, the wings never get any bigger as you add weight.
Now the wings have to lift more per sqin.
Use the lightest, most powerfull engine you can find.
The 68" Yak should be available first quarter '04

Couple of vids of it in action.
Chris Hinson is doing the flying in all of these videos.

Tyler,
First thing you can do is change prop to an apc17x6, best 3D prop around for YS120 and Saito150. I don't know to much about which ARFs would be available for that engine, since I am more in the 50cc gas engine size at the moment.
