Hello!
Does anyone have any advice concerning engine choices for the Lanier 1/4 scale Extra 300s? I would like 3D capabilites and am considering the os 1.6fx or the moki 1.8. I am aware the 1.8 is a stronger engine, but its also heavier. Should I consider a slightly heavier engine for proper balance of the plane? I am still in the construction stage and am taking extra measures to lighten the airframe (foam turtledeck, hatch, etc.) ANY advice or input for this plane would GREATLY be appreciate!

I have a ST 2300 in mine and when I go vertical it goes up a long ways. I'm not good enought to hover and all the 3D stuff yet, but I feel it is not enough power to do what you want. On the other hand my plane comes in at about 13#.
So to make a long story short, if you try to keep it as light as possible the engines you are considering should be ok.
With the ST 2300 I ended up adding about 1 1/4oz to the tail and could have probably stuck the rudder servo in the tail instead of the extra weight.
Have fun.

Thanks Goggles for your reply!
I have been reading why the lanier kits are building a little heavy and I think its because of their wood selections. The 16 sheets required to sheet the wing had weight ranges from 19 grams to 35 g. I have replace 9 of them so they now come in between 13 and 22 grams, saving almost 4 ounces. Did you take any extra measures in lightening your airframe during construction, or did you build stock?
Thanks again!

I built it not quite to stock. I wanted to glass and paint the whole thing so on the stringers I sheeted them in with 1/16" sheeting. The only other thing I did was replace the cowl with a glass one. everything else is as instructed.
My next 1/4 scale Extra (proto type) will be lighter than this one and for the most ppart should fly better. Don't get me wrong, it flies really well, but if lighter, it could be better.

I have finally decided to run a Brison 2.4 gasser. It's flying weight is comparable to the 1.8 Moki, is a bit stronger, and you can't beat the operating costs. I didn't want the lightest engine because I've read these plane build somewhat tail heavy.

Lanier has zero offset incorporated in the plans for this model. Would anyone have any suggestions on the amount of right/down thrust I should considered?
thanks!
thanks!

I too have a Lanier 1/4 Extra 300S sitting in the corner of my workshop awaiting construction. I am considering an OS 1.60 FX or possibly a Zenoah G-26. I'm concerned with not enough power. Does any one have any experience with Zenoah or gas engines in the 1/4 Extra?
Also I'm wondering if there is any problems to watch for with the abs hatch or turtle deck?
Thanks

Would you consider a never run, mint condition brison 2.4? More power than the airframe would need for 3D, but too much is much better than not enough! My project has been put on hold for the time being.

Thanks, but I think I will hold off for now till I do a little more research. I'm not going to start building till the late fall anyway. I'm just planning ahead so I have everything.
Have you given any thought as to the type of servos? (standard or high torque)

I have this plane. He powered MDS 148 and the power of this enough for unlimited vertical. Prop used: MA scimitar 19x8. But! Replace turtledeck & hatch to foam core balsa sheeted parts. Replace cowl to FG to reduce weight. Also replace u/carriage to CF. If possible replace wing tube to CF. Total weight of my plane - 11,5 lbs. All control surfaces enlarged. E.g. elevators - 60% of stab, rudder - 60% of fin.
