Default Funtana 90 - Engine

Hi guys,

I have a funtana 90 sitting here that I am looking to out fit with an engine. The main purpose of the plane will be 3D. I am currently looking at my two stroke options as I don't want to spend an arm and leg. My two best options I think would be the GMS 120 or an Evolution 100NX. What are your thoughts on these two particular engines and which would be the better choice.

Thanks for your input.

you better stay away from the gms 120. do a search in the glowengines forum for gms 120 nightmares and see if you still want one so bad

I would say go with the new OS 120AX it should have good power on the Funtana.

Wow, thanks for the replies. I have heard about some of the problems with GMS engines. That is why I was looking into the Evolution 100. Another guy at my field has one with an Evolution and it has excellent performance. THe OS would be a good choice also , but the price is a bit steep at $305 CDN. Young- Rcpilot seeing as you are from Canada, where do you get your stuff and is it cheaper than hobby wholesale.

Thanks again.

Funny you would ask. I actually order most of my stuff from Hobby Wholesale as I found it is usually the cheapest but I also go to Hobby Hobby [link=http://www/hobbyhobby.com]Hobby Hobby Website[/link]

Young, thanks for that link. i was not aware of hobby hobby, but it looks like a great place. Hobby wholesales prices are just a bit better. That place would be a convenient place to purchase things from though. The OS 120 AX is looking to be my best bet engine wise so far. I have read in other threads that it has alot of power and is typical OS quality. Thanks again.

Make sure you tell us how the power is with the OS 120AX two stroke in there. I may also get a FuntanaX 100 and put that engine in it, if it does good.

I'll be sure to report back. The Funtana X100 is almost identical to the Funtana 90 and should have great results as well. U wish I would have bough the Funtan X, if only it was out 3 months ago. Oh well.

Before you make a motor choice get an all up weight of your airframe. The F90 varies a lot in weight. There are heavy and light ones. Mine is 10 pounds (typical F90 with 32 oz power package) with an OS108 and power is OK at sea level. It would be better with an OS160. The motors you are looking at would not be a good choice for my (or the typical)F90. The F90 should be named the F140.

I HAVE A FUNTANA 90 WITH A OS160 AND 16-6-10 ZINGER PROP. THIS IS THE IDEAL SETUP FOR UNLIMITED POWER. THEY RECOMEND JR 811 SERVOS BUT I STRIPPED THE GEARS IN THE AIR. I RECOMEND HITEC THERE ARE STRONGER GEARS CALLED KARBONITE AND ARE CHEAPER THAN 811 WITH MORE TORQUE. THE # IS HS-635HB AT 30 DOLLARS EACH.

The servos that I was going to go with are Hitec 645 MG's. They have metal gears and look to be more than enough for the funtana. Does anyone have any experience with these and would they be a suitable choice for my plane. The OS 120 AX seems to be like my best option right now and I think I will be buying it in the next few weeks. Thanks for all your help.

Stay away from the Hitec karbonite gears at all costs... wouldn't want to see any more broken gears where the arm attaches... guess karbonite isn't as strong as they thought

Yes many have lost their F90's with the Karbonite gears - Some get by with even nylon gears. The way I fly mine I need MG's. 625/645's or JR125's are good for this bird. I like the 5625's when they are on sale.

Wow, there have been alot of responses. Thanks for all of your input. I am going to go with The 645's which are metal gears. They should be plenty enough without jumping up to digitals. So has anyone had any experience with the 120 AX. I have read one review that said it was a great engine. And the name OS just makes me feel that much better. Thanks again.

I have not personally stripped any karbonite gears, but a friend of mine had used HS-635HB as aieleron servos and without even flying it hard, just a high rate roll at a low speed caused the servo to strip. Then on landing the other aieleron servo stripped. I am using two of the HS475BS Karb gears in a .40 size Extra, I have two flights on this one and have not had a problem yet. But I will keep an eye on it.

When you have your control surface set up with 3D rates (45° plus) there is a lot of mechanical disadvantage to your servo (and servo gear train). Most of the time when a nylon gear or Karb gear gets damaged it is when it the control surface gets bumped on the ground when moving the plane. The problem is that most of the time you don't know it is damaged until you have been in the air a while.

Does anyone know if the Karbonite gears can be swapped out for metal gears from another servo? (like the 645's?)

Wow! A thread that I actually fit into---

I fly my F-90 with an OS-1.60FX, V2 Pump, and 18x6 Bolly. Obviously it has "stupid" power but it actually flies "light" and floats in on landing or harrier style moves--- I would not hesitate to recommend this set-up to others, although prop. clearance can be an issue- I use the Hitec-645MG's (133 oz. torque) for my ailerons and elev. with a 945MG on rudder all with 6V, no regulator and have not had any problems.

I would bet the 120 2 stroke would have good power or a ST 2300 maybe... The 1.08 as mentioned can also be proficient if dialed in properly but the F-90 is a large aircraft and I also think it should be at least called "Funtana-100". I have read posts where folks have used the Evo-100 with success but I am doubting the unlimited performance with that powerplant. If you are serious about 3D consider the 160 set-up because as mentioned, the airframe weight seems to be pretty inconsistent, and these are always for sale in the Swap-shop with the pump, pitts muffler and everything for pretty reasonable..

Keep us posted!
