Default Gas Engine for 3D?

I would like to get a plane somewhere in the 11-13 lb range, 68"-72" wing span for 3D. I want to use gas instead of glow. Are there any good gas engines available for that size plane? I notice Horizon has a new Zenoah G20ei. Would it be a good match?

Thanks for any help.

No the ZG20ei does not have the go go and is heavy for 3D.

The EV1.6 with a SK carbon fiber pipe with a good 18x6 on a F90(or now x100) or Giles UL or 73" QQ will be your best small gas set ups. You need to stay 11 pounds or under at lower elevations. At higher elevations you need to stay even lighter.

When the BME55 becomes available look for it to be the 3D motor choice for 1100in+ birds weighing 12 to 14 pounds. [8D]

I believe the bme 55 is now available, but would not recommend this large engine size to you for most current to 73" aircraft. Glow, use OS 160, mark 160, YS 140. Gas, check out the Evolution 26, 3W 28I, Martinelli. Some companys like QQ will not warrantee their aircraft with a motor larger than recommended, a 50 is out. Chip Hyde recommended a smaller motor than the 50 in his Cap X until DA came in as a sponser, now the DA 50 is recommended. DA does not have a smaller motor then the 50, sadly. The Elvolution 26 & 35 are front carb motors typical of glow engines and offer ease of installation. I have had SDS 160 and 180 from rc showcase, both have been good strong little engines, still running well after several years. They are a tad heavier than the elvo as is the 3w-28I, but thay have a little more power fdrom their rear induction design. Now have the Elvo 26 going into a QQ 73" yak 54. You can install them either with the typical beam motor mount, or back plate mount. The motor install is very good and simple. Their larger than usual ignition module poses some location problems. Choose your aprplane and then follow their engine recommendations as to size. Lots of great information here at RCU, and above all, great people typical of our hobby!!! Anyone being unkind or simply a jerk gets jumped on as they deserve. ENJOY.

Are you talking about the 2.1 pound BME 55? http://www.bmeengine.com/html/sneek55.htm

If I were you I would go with the new GREAT PLANES "Yak 54" ($399)
and the Brillelli 46 WITH the mag.. ($250 with pitts style muffler)
The light 50/55cc are TO LIGHT and the plane is very tail heavy,
(so I have read)..

This is the combination I am going to use...

What do you expect your all up weight to be with ~1,1XX sq in of wing area? Do you think you are going to be looking at a solid 14 pounds?

If your airframe is less than 1200 sq in and the light 50/55cc are not heavy enough to balance than it my be better to go with a different airframe if your goal is 3D. For instance, the H9 260 or the GP Cap 232 or the UL Giles work work.

The plane is part of the Hanger 9 "performance series" as is the H9 260
so it should 3d with the right equipment..
They recomend a Fugi 43ei that is a little on the heavy side
SOME SPECTS:

Wingspan: 81 in (2055 mm)
Wing Area: 1138 sq in (73.4 dm2)
Weight RTF: 12.5-15.25 lb (5.67-6.86 kg)
Wing Loading: 25-30 oz/sq ft (77-93 g/dm2)
Fuselage Length: 68 in (1727 mm)
Engine Required: 2-stroke 1.6-1.8 cu in (25-30 cc) or 4-stroke 1.8-2.1 cu in (30-36 cc) glow or 1.9-2.6 cu in (32-43 cc) gasoline
Radio Required: 6-channel w/7 servos (6 high-torque metal gear servos and one standard servo)

Default RE: Gas Engine for 3D?

I have a Hanger 9 Extra 260 and had the Evolution 35 in it and wished it was a pound or so lighter. It flew well but didn't have the Vert. I wanted so I took it out and now waiting for the BME 55, that should make it sing. Does anyone know more about the 55 then what the BME web site is telling us, like whats the HP? The 3W-55 has 6 1/2 HP but is very heavy. if the BME 55 has 6 1/2 HP, LOOK OUT!!

Does anyone know more about the BME 55?

They did it with the 110, so I think they can do it with the 55.

http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_37...tm.htm#3765465

BME 55 is 34-36 ounces depending on the carb used. Backplate mount and side reed valve induction. 24x8 bolly prop at 7200 rpm on stock muffler. 6500 rpm on menz 24x8 and stock muffler. Tuned mufflers add 600+ rpm. Cost is 579.00 with Falkon ignition.

The engine weighs 34-36 ounces. That is everything minus only the ignition and muffler. The ignition weighs 3 ounces. Mufflers will weigh 4 ounces and up depending on the application. The engine runs great with idle rpm as low as 800 and silk smooth

The BME 55 is the most powerful and lightest engine in the 50cc class. The pics are of the prototype so the mount will change and we may offer a rear induction version also. The prop hub can be used as a single, two, three, four or six bolt configuration. The center boss is 10mm and the bolt pattern is the same as 3W and DA. The crankshaft was carefully balanced using tungsten for optimum performance and low vibration.
