Default Ball link vs clevis? CG Ultimate...

Hi All,

I'm building my first "big" plane with a "big" engine. A CG Ultimate with a Saito 150.

I'd like to upgrade the hardware as i'll be trying 3D and pushing this plane hard.

I'm going with 1/8" carbon fiber rods with 2-56 ends and Sullivan metal horns. I can't decide if I should use ball links or locking clevis. I've never used ball links but hear they are nice.

What do I truly need for this plane?

Any help appreciated.

Thanks!

Best,
Harold

I use the dubro ball links on all of my stuff, no slop, and strong. I use the 4-40 ones, and usually end up buying aluminum servo arms that have the holes drilled and tapped for 4-40

You'll be fine with standard clevises. Ball links really add to the expense. With them, you need metal servo arms to handle the twisting action the offset ball links put on the arms.

The only problem with clevises in that size plane is that eventually you'll wear the holes in the servo arms and need to replace the arms. Even that'll take 70 or more flights.

Hi and thanks for the help so far....

I'm using heavy duty (but not metal) servo arms. I think those are 2-56. That's why I wanted to go with 1/8" carbon rods and 2-56 ball links. Do I really need 4-40?

Thanks,
Harold

I have used Ball Links on Dubro heavy duty servo arms for years and have not had one fail.I would say that if you are using Carbon rods with titanium ends the 2-56 should be fine.I have also drilled the DuBro arms for 4-40 with no problem.

Hi Mike,

That's exactly what I'm using. Heavy duty servo arms, Carbon fiber rods (1/8") with titanium 2-56 ends and 2-56 ball links.

Thanks for the help.

Best,
Harold
