Do a search on gyros for airplanes and most folks will recommend against them for airplane use (at least for 3d).

The best way to learn 3D is to burn lots of fuel and the sim.

Dude,
Its a free country and you can do what you want but I would not recommend that you use a gyro. The whole thrill and personal satisfaction of hovering is knowing that YOU put in the time and effort to learn how to do it! If you use a gyro its just not the same at all. I mean it will look cool and all but you will know that its not really you that is doing it. A gyro is for all intents and purposes auto pilot flying, NOT you.

I am sure that some people will say "well then why do we use mixes"? But mixes are different, mixes are used to keep the airplane from doing things that are a result of design deficiencies and only to be used after you have exhausted all possible efforts of setting up the airplane correctly mechanically.
