Default .50 size Scale Aerobatic (and 3D) planes?

Hey guys

I'm wanting to expand my fleet a bit; I'm getting rid of a bunch of planes I rarely fly and going to mainly scale(ish) aerobatic and 3D planes. I've looked into a LOT of aircraft, but I very rarely get to fly anything before I buy it so I'd like to get your takes on a few of them. I'm mainly looking for something I could get good result with using a .46FX to .55AX 2-stroke, or Saito .72 and .91 4-strokes.

Here's a list I've compiled of planes I'm looking at currently:

Phoenix Sukhoi SU-31
Phoenix Giles 202
Phoenix Extra 300
Nitroplanes Extra 260
Nitroplanes Zlin Z-50
Nitroplanes Yak-54
Nitroplanes Edge 540
Nitroplanes Extra 330L

The Phoenix planes seem to be geared more toward pattern-style aerobatics, due to the smaller control surfaces, though they're probably capable of some basic 3D (if my 4-Star can hover, I'm sure these can).

The Nitromodels planes generally have huge control surfaces and are lighter weight, which really appeals to me. Problem is, there are very few if any reviews of the Nitromodels aircraft in the reviews section.

Nitromodels has great prices and from what I've heard about some of their other planes, they seem to have decent construction (and lousy instruction). All in all they seem to be a good deal. Phoenix also seems to be pretty decent all around.

Do any of you have experience with any of these planes?

AND BEFORE REPLYING!!

Please stay on topic. Don't tell me that I need bigger planes/profile planes/expensive brands/etc. These will have a very specific purpose in my hangar, mostly due to transportation issues. I like small planes and I like .46 to .55 size engines. So PLEASE don't stray away from topic.

Also, am I missing any good-quality inexpensive ARFs from other manufacturers? I'm looking for only scale or sport scale planes, no profiles, no pseudo-scale (Funtana) types, or anything of that nature.

Thanks for any help!

For 40/50 sized aerobatics nothing beats the Fliton Extra ... its superb. I hear the Edge is also good. You got plug in 2 piece wing which is great for transportation. Its more costly that the Phoenix etc but you will not regret it.

I have the Fliton Edge 540 Freestyle. I have the Saito 100 on it. It has WAY more than enough power. A Saito 91 would be the perfect fit for it, seeing as how it weighs like 6lbs. It has a carbon fiber wing-tube, two piece wing and airfoiled control surfaces. It's an amazing aircraft. A pain to build, but a beauty to fly. It's hard to build because it has so many different options. Honestly, knife edge flight requires nearly zero coupling and it stalls straight ahead. It also glides like a trainer and has crazy good control throws, but still flies nearly perfectly at any attitude. Really not many flaws. Even a 3D newb like me was able to do rolling harriers for a couple seconds. It's amazing--doing both 3D and precision superbly. You won't be disappointed if you go the Fliton route, really.

Several friends had the Phoenix Planes, and they are really good quality for the price. They're pretty good precision, and the Extra flew nicely. One friend had the Nitromodels Yak, and it was cheap-quality wood and stuff(cardboard wing-tube holder and thin cowling) but flew quite nicely.

Those are some pretty planes.. The Fun Star looks like a great flying plane and I may order one just for the heck of it, but right now I'm really looking at scale planes that are 3D capable.

Anybody know about the Nitromodels Edge? It's supposed to be VERY lightweight...

Beware the nitro planes Yak-54. They carry two different planes. The fiberglass CMP Yak-54 is a tank. Good scale plane but not a 3D at all. The wood plane is not really to scale, it's fragile but it will 3D pretty well. I think the wood one is better... although I still have a CMP. They are really tough planes but you're going to need some major power to make it fly well. I have a ST 61 in mine and wish I had a 90. The wood one a 61 is plenty.

I have the NP Extra 260 and it's awesome! I replaced the hardware though. Flies sweet - it's a great value for the money.

I agree. I just got the Nitromodels Extra 260 this weekend. It was a little tough to build, but ive decided its all worth it now that it's done. Great looking model.
