Ian, you don't want to use cf rod, too heavy, use cf tubing instead and stay in the 4 to 5mm range. I'm using 5mm in my 3DX and it works out very well. You'll need two one meter pieces. In the States, that's about eight bucks worth.

Ian, you will need two maters. One male 3DX and on female. Get them together and the planes will start piling up faster then you can fly them

You know, I was inspired by this thread to build my foamie Edge. It turned up to be excellent flier, so as I wrote before, I got the whole box of depron (60 sheets) from Poland. I started to run a 'production' for my fellow club members.

Here is the drawing on the foam board to be cut:


Note, how little of the material is waisted.

And the next picture when CF tube is glued to the fuselage:


Scraps of depron were pinned to hold both parts together while glueing.

Here is the wing. No ailerons yet, because they will be hinged after wing is glued to the fuselage.


The wing has CF leading edge and CF spar near the TL.
Painted in my favorite scheme with latex (thinned of course).

i also foud a plane called the foamtana on RCGroups. It looks allot nicer than the 3DX but im really only concerned about performance.

Im postponing the build for ages, ive now got some money behind me and im saving for a bigger plane.

Hi Guys, I just finnished a 1/4 balsa stick fuse for my 3dx. I used the same wing and tail feathers. No need for a carbon spar in the fuse as a covered stick fuse is stronger than the cf foam one. A little ply for the gearbox mount and voila!! The fuse does not twist half as much, is stronger and weighs practically the same. I also just bought a Thunderpower 2 cel Li-poly 2100 mah battery and can say that I have never seen anything like this plane before. The combination of the GWS 6.6 to one gearbox and this battery are awsome. Yes I know the idea was to keep this model cheap and the battery and the needed charger are not cheap, but WOW!!!! the perfomance is awsome. I flew for 20 mins. on one charge and most of it was hovering and vertical pull outs. The all up weight is 12 oz. Do yourself a favour and pick up one of these batteries.I am waiting for some depron and will be building an Ultimate soon. I will post pics soon and perhaps some video. Thanks once again to the guys at foamyfactory. MAD out.

Thoroughly impressed with how that plane flies. Gonna have to try to make one, gotta give it a go. THAT is what I'm looking for, it CAN fly slow, great acro and 3D. Will it fly like a normal plane as well? Does it have enough weight to be stable for "normal " flight? Geeze, really enjoyed that video.

I recently burned out the EPS300C motor and replaced it with a 350 motor in my GWS gearbox (D gearing). My run times are significantly lower due likely to higher current draw. Performance is better though. My speed control cuts out a lot especially on the smaller 720 mah pack (fast voltage drop at high throttle). How well would a 2 cell lithium poly pack work in this setup? 3 cells seems like too much voltage for this motor and I'm not ready to go brushless yet ($$$) I don't want to be replacing the motors every 10 or 20 flights. I was looking at the 2 cell Thunder Power 2100 HD mAh pack. It can handle a higher amp load than the Etec cells. Would this work well with a 350 motor and D gearing. My 3DX comes in at 12.3 ozs with an 800 mAh NiMh battery.

Greg, this plane will do normal flight as well as 3D. Big loops, small loops, snaps, aileron rolls, and my personal favorite, ascending flat spins. It's a must have for your hanger, and Tim at Foamy Factory is re-vising the plans for both the 3DX as well as the Ultimate to make them perform even better.

Chris, a two cell pack will fly the 3DX but you just won't have nearly the punch as with a three cell. I don't know how many runs you can expect to get out of a stock 350 motor with three cells, but I'm going to find out. I'm running a 350C-D in mine and so far I have ten flights and it's still running strong. Two things you can do to help the situation is to break the motor in correctly, and use full throttle in short bursts.

I'm almost ready to glue all the parts together.

Total weight is 4 oz (around) It should be lighter when the paint dries.

The plane will fly slower than my GWS Tiger Moth. It is all throttle management. Make the leap, the rewards are well worth it. I have only had about 5 flights on my set up ( (300 with the 6.6 to 1 gearbox and a Thenderpower 2 cell 2100 mah) and am very pleased with the flight performance. The vertical is ulimited almost right to the battery cut off point of my speed controller. The pack is light and does not heat very much at all all after a full flight. MAD out.

Yes standard motor with 6.6 to 1 gear reduction. Both a 12/6 and an 11/8 gws prop. The motor is retimed by about 6 mm. as stated in the first coupple of threads in this topic . I am using a 30 amp fma speed control( overkill but I had one on hand)and a Thunderpower 2100 mah 2 cell Lipoly. all up weight is 12 oz. Motor does not overheat after a full flight.
