OK! I started on my Ultimate!
I got two wings and a fuse cut out this afternoon and taped them together to see what it'd look like. If my gearbox comes in Thurs, I should have flight pics this weekend! (Weather permitting....)

Your what?
I measured the weight of the "yellow stuff" to ~2 ounces per square foot. It's 10mm thick so it will have a helluva lot of drag. But hey, it's an experiment!!!
I've two wings, a fuse, rudder, stab, and elevators cut out. Just have to glue it all together and wait for my gearbox to come it.

Hi guys, I'm looking to begin building a 3dx, but I have a question. I'd like to go the brushless route, but I'm a complete beginner to the whole electric flight thing. I've found its seductive power and cleanliness difficult to resist, but I find most details of it totally baffling. The formula for the plane is quite specific and I appreciate that, Razor 350 and GWS 350 gearbox.. BUT.. from what I can tell there isn't a Razor to be purchased, ANYWHERE.
Since I don't really understand much about electric flight yet I have no way to figure out what would be a good substitute. I've seen mention of the MP Jet 25/35-20.. not efficient, okay, but it's cheap and it's AVAILABLE.. are there any other good alternatives? I'd like to use the 3 cell Lithium power option as well.. 20 minute+ flight times sound like a good thing to me.
If possible I'd like a motor I could put on something a little bigger (or faster) at a later date, which it sounds like the Razor 400 would qualify as (if I could FIND one...). I could be wrong, but that's the best I can figure out from all this. It's just that now that I've discovered building models with foam I've got all sorts of ideas of future projects I'd like to undertake.. once I've built a 3dx and flown it into the ground, that is. And I'd like to be able to use the same motor for them.

I'm running 3 1200mah li-polys which as far as I know is the "hot" set-up but with a 350C/D motor, as I am running, you hafta be very careful with the throttle or the brushes in the motor go bye bye. The reason I bought the 3 cell pack is that I plan on upgrading to a motor such as a razor when I smoke this 350. Anywho, I don't really know if the discharge rate on li-ion batteries is the same as li-polys, but the 3DX will fly on two high capacity li-polys. Sorry if I caused any confusion but I didn't even realize that you wrote li-ions as opposed to li-polys. This airplane crap is getting complicated.

It's like that old song:
Slip out the back jack. Make a new plan, Stan. No need to be coy, Roy. Just get yourself free. Hop on the bus, Gus. No need to discuss much. And so on
Alrighty! My Ultimate looks like an airplane. My laudable LHS won't get my gearbox in until next week at the EARLIEST. *sigh*. Powereing mine witha 4:1 SPEED 400 and 3c 1200 LiPoly. Maybe I can run it direct drive till my box comes in.....

Hello All,
Great little plane, I'm want to build the 3dx. I'm trying to print the plans but am getting 15/16 on the inch scale, meaning that one inch on the plan is 15/16 " on my ruler.
5" on the plan would be +\- 4and 6/8" Is this allright, If not how can I resize the image in adobe acrobat.
Thanks,
John

Ian, what the hell do you mean by 6mm for carbon coppy? And what in Scotland is a mater? You need 6mm depron for the 3DX, two sheets 19"x37" and two 36" pieces of 4 to 5mm carbon fiber rod for the fuse. and wing. If I'm to help you mate you gotta learn to speak Texan.[sm=biggrin.gif][sm=biggrin.gif]

John, I had the same problem so downloaded a free dxf viewer, Volo View, and copied the dxf file to a floppy which I took to my local copy shop and they charged me four bucks to run me off a perfect one sheet plan.

Hi Tom,
How did you get the dxf file, If i open the pfd file in volo view it wont let me change the file format. Do you have the plans in dxf?
Thanks,
John

Sorry John, I was thinking about a different airplane. Download the 3DX final sheet, copy to floppy and take that to your favorite copy place. The 3DX final sheet has the wing, fuse. and stab on one sheet.

Hello,
Another question, the only foam I've been able to find is a product called sturdy board,
its a foam board covered on both sides with a plastic film its 5mm thick.
Do you think this will work?
Thanks,
John
