RE: RE: RE: Mini 3D from Extreme Flight anyone get it yet ?
Guys, My buddy Rich built a Mini 3D last week with a norvel Big Mig 25 in it. With HS81's it came up 2 lbs even. This engine with a 10x4 prop had awesome vertical. I could not believe the power and the fact that it came in so light. The only problem was the stock motor mount broke on a hard landing. I would suggest using an aftermarket engine mount or He repaired his by epoxying 2 carbon fiber rods under the existing mounts for strength. I do not see them ever breaking again.
I have not seen the LA25 in it, but for around the same price. The Norvel 25 is awesome and lighter! Erick |
RE: RE: RE: Mini 3D from Extreme Flight anyone get it yet ?
Hi Erick:
I ended up cutting a very thin carbon fiber sheet for the top and bottom and CA'd it to the motor mount. This enabled me to keep the motor mounting system that they designed and have the support for the 25FX. You're right, the plane is very light. Jim! |
RE: RE: RE: Mini 3D from Extreme Flight anyone get it yet ?
Hey Guys I bought 3 of these mini's from Chris, and I did tons of different things and what i found to work best as far as engine, Is the Webra 25 or 35 there both the same size and fit just a little snug you just have to trim the wood on the wooded mounts just a bit to get them to fit, but I have now one with a 25LA which I use 25% fuel in it, and the other two has the 25 and the other the 35, I was flying the mini with the Webra 35 a few days ago, and I cant lie, it got away from and Broke the tail off and a few other things, but its nothing to serious, I also need a lot of modifying on this plane everything from installing Carbon Fiber Rods to rearrange a few things and mounted the servos in alittle different, If anyone would like any ideas feel free to ask and i'll send you a bunch of photos Iv done, In-fact all this talk about this plane, I'm calling Chris right now and getting another one, But I sure wish that edge would come in..

RE: RE: RE: Mini 3D from Extreme Flight anyone get it yet ?
I managed to pull off a few flights today, the third time out with my .25LA. I gotta say that it's breaking in nicely and that I've got all the vertical authority I want (and I need it being so new to 3D). I was amazed this time around at how strongly it's going straight up, and all I'm using is 15% fuel with an APC 9x4.
My only issue now is to bring the weight down from 1000 grams. There's no way I'm losing my 2 1/4" electrolite wheels...my takeoffs are too good to mess with now. I may have to sacrifice the plastic spinner I'm using, and definitely switch to a lighter battery. I might also lose the extra nut I used inside the fuel tank to weigh down the clunk (isn't there any more flexible fuel line out there?). Perhaps a wooden prop might help, but the APC is working so well I hate to lose it. Oh well, I've got plenty to think about. It sure was nice getting a February flight in! Chuck |
RE: RE: RE: Mini 3D from Extreme Flight anyone get it yet ?
Chuck, I used 1/2A size, small, fuel tubing for the pick up line and the stock clunk and everything worked out great. The LA has plenty of fuel, still running it break in rich, and the clunk hits all the corners.

RE: RE: RE: Mini 3D from Extreme Flight anyone get it yet ?
ORIGINAL: c/f II really believe it just may be light enough to bounce on a minor impact, even an engine out Torque or hover at 5' will probably recover with no harm. Forgive me for being so forward but nothing about this plane says .25........ I am running a 25FX, with 9x4 APC in mine, its about 37 oz RTF. Regarding a bonce on a minor impact....I was hovering mine yesturday about 15-20 feet up (ya kind of high) and ran out of fuel,[X(] Of coarse it tail slid a bit before pitching over, I waited as long as possible to gain airspeed and yanked up. It hit the ground almost verticle. I walked accross the runway expecting to find a pile of garbage. I broke the prop, NO OTHER DAMAGE, not even a scuff in the covering. MINI 3D's will Bonce..... Ps: I dont plan on tempting fate again :D Mark |

FNG How does it fly with this .25 FX?? I am expecting my Komacro to be the same weight with it!!

Hovers around 1/3 to 1/2 throttle, its a rocket straight up at full power. Still float around in harrier. My C.G. is at 4 1/4" aft from L.E.

RE: RE: RE: RE: Mini 3D from Extreme Flight anyone get it yet ?
Well, it finally happened and my HS-81 rudder servo has stripped. I don't do many high stress manuevers yet, I just think it happened mostly from scrapes on takeoff. So it's time for replacement. I was thinking about replacing all the servos with HS-85MG's, but that will add almost an ounce to the plane. Which brings me to my question: Has anyone here ever tried the Hobbico CS-12MG servo?
Here are the tech notes copied directly from Tower: --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This is a High-Speed Metal-Geared Micro Servo by Hobbico. This Servo is Used for Smaller Models Where High Speed, Strength, Precision, and Reliablity are a Must. FEATURES: One of the Slimmest and Fastest Micro Servos Available. High-Speed, for Swift, Sharp Response. Brass Gear Train with Aluminum Output Gear for Ultimate Precision and Reliability. Direct-Drive Potentiometer. Cored Motor Design. Surface Mount Technology. Universal Connector Fits Futaba, Hitec, JR, KO Propo, Airtronics Z, and Tower Hobbies. (NOT Airtronics old "A" plug.) One Year Warranty. INCLUDES: One High-Speed Metal-Geared Micro Servo w/Universal Connector One Hardware Accessory Bag (Screws, Grommets, Eyelets, Horns) SPECS: 4.8V 6.0V Torque: 36.1 oz/in (2.63kg-cm) 41.7 oz/in (3.03kg-cm) Speed: .11 sec .09 sec Signal Pulse: Positive Pulse Control 1520us Neutral Weight: .67 oz (18.99g) Length: 1.20" (30mm) Width: .47" (12mm) Height: 1.10" (28mm) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The price is only $22.99. It appears to have the same specs as the HS-81, but with stronger metal gears. Any experience or opinions on these things? The specs themselves tell me I want these, but I feel better asking you folks first for potential bad experiences (or spec corrections). They only weigh 0.02 ozs more than the HS-81s (I can certainly live with that). Thanks, Chuck |
RE: RE: RE: RE: Mini 3D from Extreme Flight anyone get it yet ?
Looks like the Hobbico is really a hitec 81-MG repackaged.
I also stripped an 81 in the mini 3D, very delicate servo only good for throttles IMO. I've heard good things about the 85MG but never used one. I went with futaba 3101 on the ailerons and 225MG in the tail (that's what I had in the garage) I'd try the 85MG Don't worry about an ounce or two, my mini 3D is 2lbs 5oz dry and still flys VERY light. I can't get it to drop a wing in a harrier :D |
RE: RE: RE: RE: Mini 3D from Extreme Flight anyone get it yet ?
I just ordered the 85MGs for the tail and 85BBs for the ailerons...I think you're right and they're the way to go. Using the metal gear version only for the tail adds less weight. I had a long conversation previously with C/F about these servos, but thought I might have found something new to try. I believe you're correct thinking they're repackaged 81s.

All Thumbs
Let us know how you like the 85's. I've heard good things about them but never used them myself. |
RE: RE: RE: RE: Mini 3D from Extreme Flight anyone get it yet ?
How much more torque does the 85mg have over the 81mg?

Chuck, the one that stripped was a resin gear and not a mg though, right?

Just wondered, I'm running all 81mg's on mine and so far, no problem.

I broke the gears on my 81s too. If you fly hard, I'll happen to you too. I would switch to 85s.

Well, the metal gears should protect you from breaks I should think. I just said the heck with it since I'm now planning on moving my 81s to replace the standard size throttle servos I have in my other planes. If I were to keep the 81s in the Mini, I'd at least swap out the rudder's gears with the metal replacement set...but I think I'm going to be happier overall with the 85s. This plane is so much fun to fly, and so easy to quickly drag out to the field, that I have to keep it in top form!
I stripped three gears on my rudder 81 as you see in the pic. Kind of hard to see, especially on the smaller gear (when you have a digital camera, you just can't seem to stop taking pictures ). Chuck |
RE: RE: RE: RE: Mini 3D from Extreme Flight anyone get it yet ?
I'm pretty happy with the 85s. I'm not the most experienced judge yet but they are certainly more solid. I can tell just by grabbing the control surfaces. The chattering is gone too.
But I made one other change to my plane that turned out better than I'd hoped. I swapped out my stock 25LA muffler for a Macs Products mousse can muffler. I did it to save weight because it's at 1.7 oz and the stock one is 2.2 oz. You folks probably realized this but I didn't know that I'd get a power increase with it. In fact, I gained 1500rpm from the last time I tached the engine. With my APC9x4, using 15% fuel my 25LA is now turning a steady 14,100 rpm. It's tunable, but I just had to go out and fly it first and I'm amazed at the power boost. My 2lb 4oz Mini is starting to look a lot more like an Estes rocket. I don't know if this muffler is that good, or the stock one is that bad, but it's the best $36 I spent on this plane. Chuck |
Power Pod Mod
1 Attachment(s)
In looking at the Power pod, I did not want to hassle flying with a 15, so since I already had an OS 25FX, I decided to go the route that Tom did; get a DB motor mount, put it on the South Beach Diet, and modify the pod to my liking. I saved quite a bit of weight with Tom's mod, (thanks Tom), but I still did not like the way that the stock tank mounted as the center of the tank is below the carb line when flying upright. With a little carbon fiber, CA, and a dremel, it's amazing what you can do.
I also am using a GP 4 oz. tank for a little longer flight time and I can keep the fuel lines exiting at the same level as the carb. By not exiting out the hole in the firewall, I can move my engine all the way back on the rails to help with the balance. Otherwise, it's a tight fit with the both tubes coming out the firewall hole. Here's a pic of my roughed out power pod. One other thing to note... Because of the longer tank, I did not have to make any modifications to the klunk(sp?). It works just fine. I think that the inch extra length helped in the line flexibility. I will post a pic when I get the engin installed tonight or tomorrow. Jim! |
