RE: The twist is here!
I received my twist last week it is to gather and almost flight ready. I have thunder Tiger Pro . 46 on the front, I had to added weight to the front to get the CG little past 4" behind the leading edge. I have a question on airbrakes, how fare do you deflect down the ailerons?
Chris |
RE: The twist is here!
Airbrakes or, I would call them spoilers, or spoilerons if you are using your ailerons go up. Flaps and/or flaperons go down. I would just start with deflecting them up at about half your aileron travel and see what happens. If you get comfortable with it, you can go up later.
I've never used just spoilerons, I have used crow on my ultra stick 60...which is flaps down, spoilerons up. It will almost stop you in mid air if you're not in the throttle. They were great for harriers and short field landings. Kevin |
RE: The twist is here!
I'd love to hear a Knife Edge report on this plane, at a Hundred bucks in seems interesting.
Thanks, Dennis |
RE: The twist is here!
I think it is well worth the cost! I have flow this plane twice and was doing stuff with it I wouldn't dare with most planes I have flown hundreds of times. Now if they would just make a big one I could put my spare gas engine on I would be set!

RE: The twist is here!
JoeAirport had it right for my twist wing bolt. The problem was not with the bolt but the blind nut. Even after trying a new bolt the wing just would not tighten down. After pulling out the old blind nut I can see what went wrong. The blank used before the threads were cut in was too big.
Mine has barely got any thread at all leaving a large amount of flat metal space between the thread cuts. Can't wait to get it up in the air. Overall I would recommend this plane so far. I'm going to use an OS 50SX for power and HS 425's for the servos. Let you know how she fly’s as soon as the weather starts too corporate. |
RE: The twist is here!
I saw earlier in this thread that someone put a magnum 91 4 stroke on one. How did this workout. I happen to have a 91 I am not using on anything right now and my LHS has a twist just waiting for me. I would like to use this engine but I am worried about having balancing problems. This engine runs great and would have gobs of power on this plane. Is the plane built strong enough to handle this much engine? Help me decide.

RE: The twist is here!
Rick, I think the plane is built plenty strong for this engine. As for balancing, I had to put several 4-6oz of weight (I can't remember exactly) in mine with a .46fx. I also have the battery shoved in under the tank. So, you may be able to get a 91 on the nose with the battery towards the back and only add a few oz to the tail if any. It really depends on the 91. The problem I would see you having would be that the motor mounts can only go so wide b/c of the way the nose is designed. Shoving a 91 in that space is going to be tricky.
let us know what you do, kevin |

RE: The twist is here!
I took my 91 down to the LHS and tried to fit it into the fuse. No go without some serious modification to the front. The engine would just fit inside the cheek pieces without the mount. With the mount it wouldn't fit at all. the throttle also looked like it would be a bear to hook up. I really didn't need this plane anyway.

RE: The twist is here!
Forget that 11" prop, the aps 12.25x3.75 is the only way to go.
|
RE: The twist is here!
Walleyevision, Why? 11 7 seem to be fine for me. What does it do for you? What engine are you using?
|
RE: The twist is here!
Contrary to what horizon says, I don't think this plane is made for speed. An 11x7 is going to be harder to keep slow, but it can be done. You will get more thrust per rpm using the 12.25, so if you are looking to hover, it'll make give you more pull out when you need it.

RE: The twist is here!
Anyone have a weight on this ARF with a 16-17 ounce engine in it? I bet around 5.5 lbs.
|
RE: The twist is here!
Check threads on the Magic Extra 300L in the ARF forum.
I've got about 80 flights on a Magic Extra that I bought used. My favorite plane to fly - great fun - but some of the worst covering I've ever seen (seems like something new peels up or off every time I fly it). I'd try the twist once they have their broken rib problem solved. Greg |
RE: The twist is here!
i am building a TWIST myself this week, mine had NO broken ribs at all. Anybody notice that the axles have a drop of solder on them to prevent seperation. Wish they had done that to the set i had on my FUNTANA.

RE: The twist is here!
Went out yesterday, It was blowing about 15-20mph. I had it just hanging in the wind over the runway about 20 feet up. Just above idle. I went to advance the throttle on my new Magnum .52XLS, it quit! And it came down. It hit pretty hard and nothing broke. The gear was bent up, I just straightened it out and is as good as new. As hard as it hit I thought for sure the whole front end was trashed. Nothing. This is a super strong plane. A ton of fun also. I put a Tower Muffler on the .52. It has so much power it is unreal. Still fine tuning the engine.

RE: The twist is here!
Mikerc, sorry for the plung. I am glad to hear that the twist is tough. It seems like it would brake apart really easy. I am releaved that it can take a little abuse.

RE: The twist is here!
Got my Twist together and waiting for the Saito 72 to come in.............:D. Do any of you using this combo have pictures of engine installation and/or comments on how you went about your particular method of installing this engine in the Twist. I was concerned about working clearances around the cheeks of the fuse, is inverted or upright the best choice? Is the included motor mount that comes with the Twist sufficient or should I consider a Dubro or Dave Brown, etc. This is my first 4 stoke engine experience so you can probably guess I'll take all advice I can get.

RE: The twist is here!
Lobob,
I finished my twist off with a Thunder Tiger .91 4 stroke.........:D:D:D First thing you will notice is there is not much room for you carb throws. I did not move the carb but I did need to make a larger hole in the firewall then recommended. I have yet to fly it (weather has been terrible in KY) but I have broke the engine in. The 4 stroker will be PLENTY of power for this thing. If I bring the throttle up more than 3/4 it feels like the tail feathers are going to rip off! lol! lol! To some things up, you will need to make a couple modifications to fit the 4 stroker in but you wont be dissapointed. (Also with a 4 stroker, your CG should be just about perfect!) |
RE: The twist is here!
CaseyVigil,
Wow, bet that TT91 is gonna pull your Twist to the stars!!! I hope I can wait long enough to properly bench break-in my new Saito (due this Thursday) before I stuff it in the plane and put it thru it's paces. Still hoping for someone with a Saito FA72 to post some pictures of their install..........not sure if enough folks will see this post buried in this ongoing thread. Maybe will have to start a new one. Anyway, thanks and may the wind Gods take pity on your flying field:D Lobob AMA #808252 |
RE: The twist is here!
Has anyone got this plane to harrier w/o wing rock?
|
RE: The twist is here!
I bought my Twist on Friday, worked on it over the weekend and flew it just now. I should have postponed the maiden flight due to wind gusts, however I could not wait. It weighed in at just under 5 lbs. I have a OS 50SX with a tower muffler. Two flights today, two dead stick landings. The first landing was easy and I even got to do a tight go-around. The second landing was a sight to behold. Remember the wind gusts I mentoned? I did a "Dead stick harrier!" Really, It actually lowered it from about 40 feet and it dropped to the ground from about 6 inches! That was cool. That was also a good sign for me to pack up and leave. I only flew it on low rate today as it was new to me. I did not have to adjust any trims. This was a first. Now I just need to get my engine dialed in. Does anyone know the inital low speed setting for the 50?

RE: The twist is here!
I flew mine again today, and started to do some crazier stuff. Knife edge is very good, with only a slight tendancy to roll toward the belly. Sometimes it needed correction, other times not. 46fx with tower muffler hovers it at a hair more than half throttle. Snaps are pretty violent, and will almost stop you if you're not in the throttle. Still waiting to move the CG back.
Lands so slow it seems like you could reach out and catch it. This thing is a blast to fly! k |
RE: The twist is here!
Hey guys,
I'm seriously thinking about getting a twist but i have some questions for you. First, how does this plane fly in comparison to a trainer 40? I had a hobbico superstar 40 and i could fly that really well and my friends lucky stck pretty well. Also, what radios and servos are you running in yours? I have a 6-channel futaba computer radio that came with 4-3004 servos. I know i need another one, but how well do you think these servos will hold up? Like i said, my previous plane was a trainer so i'm not going to be doing extreme aerobatics, but maybe eventually. Are any of you running a Magnum 52? My friend also has that engine and it screams so i want to put that in it. Overall, are you guys happy with this plane? Thanks Tom |
