RE: The twist is here!
Well mine is flying with a Saito 72 with a 13x6 apc prop and a 2and1/2 in spinner, used the stock wheels and it weighed in right around 4 and 1/2 pounds. Servos I'm using are JR 4131 for the ailerons and 537 on the tail and the throttle. Flies absolutely great, and yes it doesn't want to land, mine touched the runway 3 times and still lifted back up. I'm running flaperons and spoilerons. and triple rates. It is truely a fun flying airplane.[8D]Oh almost forgot plane balanced at 4and a 1/2 inches from the leading edge.

RE: The twist is here!
Spoilerons are opposite flaperons. They are supposed to make harriers easier, other than that, I don't know what they do. I had them on my ultra stick but they were coupled to flaps to make the crow function.
I opted to put my elevator in that hole b/c it gave me better geometry with the arms I was using. In retrospect, I don't think it would have mattered that much. wyflyer, sorry, I don't have a scale, but I can tell you that it weighs about 5 oz more than it should b/c that's how much lead I have in the front to balance it @ 4 to 4.25. I plan on backing that down to 2-3 oz when I get used to it. Anybody else got pics, did anybody make any mods? k |
RE: The twist is here!
I decided not to send the wing back to hanger 9. I cut away some of the ultra coat to view the ribs and glad I did. the ribs are cored out, only the pieces that are left have broken along the grain. three of the ribs are completly hollow. I guess it's a little to late to send it back now. Just have to reinforce the ribs a little.
Any Ideas? |
RE: The twist is here!
well it's done... everything stock but control rods, and screws... soft, mixed metric and standard. I replaced the standard screws with hardened socket head and the control rods are now 2-56 instead of metric. I had 2 hitec 475's and a few 425's laying around so I used the 475's on rud and ele and 425's on ail, HS-81 for throttle. power is a good running mag 52XLS, should pull the snot out of it. AUW is a bit more than flyboy's... mine came in at 5 lb 1oz NO LEAD!!!! the motor is back as far as possible, I also had to put the batt above the tank to get it to balance at 4.5, I think that will be move back quickly and I have LOT's of room to move the battery so getting an aft CG will be no problem. control throws are as much as I could get... hanger9 did a nice job of beveling, throws are at least 45 degrees with a tiny surface gap... not bad hanger9. I won't get to test fly it until sunday...unless the 25mph + winds due in saturday don't show up:D

RE: The twist is here!
Funsterdan, I'd fly it for now, but still put one on order from Horizon. It won' t take more than 30 minutes to put your new one together when it gets there. I don't think Horizon will have a problem with the hole in the wing b/c it was the manufactures fault.
Let us know what you do, k |
RE: The twist is here!
Mine comes in at 5lbs even. I have hitec 225bb on all surfaces and an hs-81 on throttle. A magnum .52 2 stroke for power. APC 12.25X3.25 prop. 5 cell nimh. pack. I have all stock stuff except the horns and tail wheel assembly. I am going to try and fly this afternoon. This thing is built like a tank. Should be nice.

RE: The twist is here!
Kev-79 I called horizon and they are shipping out a new wing today. (thanks to your reply) thanks. I am going to fly it this sunday. Ill let you know how it turned out. I will not fly with the broken wing though, a friend of mine just bought the twist, he gave me his wing out of the box. I will give him the new one when it comes in. What a guy, hu.
thanks for the advice, funsterdan |
RE: The twist is here!
Glad to hear how things worked out for you. What a friend, giving you his wing in advance!
Does anybody know if the magnum 52 and .46 fx weigh the same or there about? k |
RE: The twist is here!
Flew again last night and all is well still. Kev79, I can't say for sure, but I think the magnum may weigh a bit more. I finally setup the airbrakes right last night and now the plane stops on a dime! You can get away with almost no elevator and over 50% "flap" droop and come in fast, hit the switch and she flairs and almost stops - it's pretty cool. Does fly around really good slow too.
|
RE: The twist is here!
I put 10 flights on mine with the Magnum .52 yesterday. It is unreal. Hovers at 1/3 throttle and has plenty of pulling power. It doesn't want to harrier to well to much wing rock. I am going to try a few more things to fix that (spoilers and less elevator) Lands like a trainer. I just can't get over the power of the Magnum. Super combo.

RE: The twist is here!
Just putting mine together today...Will have all Hitec 425BB's and a OS50sx for power...I plan on using a APC 12.25X3.75 prop...I replaced all of the Metric hardware and rods with American parts...I also have a Tower Hobbies muffler and an Ultrathrust to try on the 50...Have you seen the new 56 that "Just Engines" is coming out with next month???Looks promising...

RE: The twist is here!
I had the same problem, the wig bolt is mis threaded.
|
RE: The twist is here!
I flew mine twice today and it was a blast. I had to replace the wing bolt also. Luckilly I had a metal bolt handy. I think this plane is a great mixture of control response and stability. It handles the wind very well also.

RE: The twist is here!
can u get this plane in the uk ? would it hover on an Irvine .46
|
RE: The twist is here!
Anybody who has mounted a Saito 72 in the twist, please give us an idea of how you did it and how your ran the throttle linkage. Did you reverse the carb, etc. TIA

RE: The twist is here!
mine flew and flew GREAT!!!!! the mag 52XLS is plenty...almost to much with full throttle level flight. It was VERY windy today, 15 to 25 gusting... this plane is dam near IMPOSSIBLE to land with that much wind!!! you really have to take your time and just let it quit flying on it's own...trouble is the plane does not want to quit flying!!! even at 2300 rpm idle it was holding alt in the wind. snap's are VIOLENT with MAX throws, roll rate is blinding with max throws and loops are TIGHT inside and out, with MAX ele you have to be careful... it will snap/break out without ele>flap coupling, this plane really needs dual rates for ele unless your easy on the sticks. The plane does and awesome upright and inverted flat spin... inverted was harder to hold in the wind for some reason(ME) up right I could have spun it into the ground from 300ft:D it will also climb in an upright spin. waterfalls are nice and tight with no loss of alt to speak of... you need MAX throw to make them look right. I didn't try any knife edge... next time. with the CG set at 4 7/8 it's not at all ele sensitive on low or high rate...just make sure on high rate your easy on the ele...to much will make it snap. BTW my low rates were book high... high rate was all I could get, bout 45/50 degrees... my robart throw meter only reads 2 inchs up/down ... I'm getting a little over 3 inches of travel on ele and ail, rudder is about the same, that's more than the recommended 3D throws:D all in all this is one GREAT flying plane... the only thing I think it needs is 4 stroke power, I'm gona call a few LHS to see if anyone has a saito 72 in stock... this should make the PERFECT 3D/sunday flyer beat around plane;)
Bearair, I took my 72 off my EF 540 to see how it would fit... the only problem I see is the throttle, I'm thinking at this point I'll use a 2-56 threaded rod in the stock location, bend the rod to 90 degrees and pass it through the throttle arm with a nut on either side... the carb will also be in stock location...I think it will work... if not then it's bell crank time;) John I just remembered... I flipped the carb on my 72 to make tuning easy on the 540...the carb on my 72 is not in stock location Bearair. |
RE: The twist is here!
Anyone having problems with the wing bolt and blind nut not fitting right this is what I did to the Funtana (same company):
Heat up the blind nut with a soldering gun, at the same time keep a flat screwdriver in there prying at it. After about 30 seconds it heats up the hot glue and comes right out. Then go to the hardware store and get a 1/4-20 blind nut and a new nylon bolt. They will fit like a glove compared whatever they put in that thing stock. Use gorilla glue to glue the new blind nut in there. The teeth of the blind nut will line up in the old holes in the wood beam and your wing will be lined up just like it was when it came out of the box. Be carefull not to get gorilla glue on the threads as it expands. I didn't have any problems since I knew the glue expands and didn't put on too much. It holds like steel. |
RE: The twist is here!
I have a dumb question. What are air brakes and how do they compare to flaperons? Thanks

Thanks for the great flight report John! I just finished assembling mine today. OS .50 SX engine but I've only got a 11 X 7 prop handy. What do guys suggest I use for a prop for this engine? I replaced the wing bolt too everything else stock. Very impressed so far! Just need to break in the engine but not sure what prop? Any advise would be greatly appreciated! Thanks guys....

RE: The twist is here!
n3cal, the 11x7 would be OK for break-in and flight, I'd run an APC 12.25x3.75 or 13x4W after break-in... you almost always want less pitch and more Dia for funfly type planes. have you ever broke in a ringed engine before? if not please go over to the engine forum and read up on break-in for RINGED engines, and carefully read your manual. if you break in/run your 50SX like an ABC engine it won't last more than a few flights

RE: The twist is here!
I think the problem with the nylon bolt is completely with the bolt itself, b/c I got a new 1/4x20 and it worked fine.
Thanks for the info on extracting a blind nut Joe, that should make life easier. k |
RE: The twist is here!
Great day flying! OS 46 AX, 11X5 APC, MACS pipe. Balanced at 4 5/8" with 2 oz. lead as far forward as possible. Set my JR 8103 with 30% expo on low rates, 50% on high, really smoothes this plane out. Once I get comfortable I'll set up the 3D rates. I am assuming that the nylon bolt supplied was some close metric equal since other hardware supplied was metric also. This is my first low wing / 3D plane and had no problems floating in just as my trainer does. Still running new engine on the rich side, after it gets broke in I'll go for some more aggressive flying. Not sure this .46 will be enough engine for harriers, but it does fly the plane well. Ordered a 12.25 X 3.75 prop and hope that will float the Twist. Hope to fly again Wed. and will post more later.

RE: The twist is here!
this is my understanding of airbrakes Plowboy. Airbrakes drop your ailerons down like flaps on a jet and uses some up elevator to stabilize. This increases drag and helps slow the plane down. This allows you to come in at a high angle of attack/fast and hit the switch for airbrakes which slows the plane way down and is great for short runways. This plane didn't want to seem to land if there was any type of breeze and now with the airbrakes I can come in steep and fast, hit the switch and slow almost to a stop and get on the ground. I love this plane as it is very easy to manuever and is unaffected by wind - unless you're trying to land! It does flat sping great and knife edge is good too. Now that my 46FX is all tuned up and flys alot better. It is very easy to harrier this plane as well. My favorite plane so far, although I do think I will go up a bit in engine size. This is a must get plane!! I think my balance is off side to side, or my rudder is out of trim or something as I need to hold a lot of right rudder to keep the plane staright when I go vertical.

noxam, have you looked at your engine thrust lines? sounds like you could use some right thrust or have left thrust. I put about 2 degrees right thrust in mine when I mounted the engine... seems about right, once the wind calm's a bit I'll be able to tell for sure. BTW how is the knife edge? it was so windy I didn't try it with mine, any coupling? high alpha knife edge possible? John |
RE: The twist is here!
ORIGINAL: plowboy I have a dumb question. What are air brakes and how do they compare to flaperons? Thanks Airbrakes are when you program your ailerons to activate in the up position together usually I have mine set at about 1/2 throw. You can use one of your switches on the radio for this. This makes the plane drop really quick still with good control..great for short feild landings and some 3D tricks Cheers Don |
