If you want to fly pattern manuevers, ya get a pattern plane. If ya want to fly hot dog 3D, ya get a 3D plane.

A really good cheap plane to practice pattern manuevers with, is the Intruder from World Models. It is a .61 size plane and tracks really well. Sells for about $199 USD.

UCD has quite a bit of rudder coupling, also the wing is a little too thick to maintain speed for smooth pattern.

You know, its the one where you chopped the rudder down, and relocated the tank ;)

Good to hear from you NOSRAM. It's been a while since I've heard from you on this thread. You must be busy cutting down your rudder and relocating your tank too.

Well, to answer your question, I replaced my OS .91 2 stroke with a Saito 150 4 stroke. Not that the OS was underpowered or anything but I had the Saito 150 laying around and figured more power would even be better. Well I was right and really liked the limitless and rocket like vertical. Obviously, I have to fly it most of the time throttled down (it darn near hovers at idle).

Now to all you people who will undoubtedly read this thread and want to reply with something like "the UCD doesn't need that much power" or "the UCD isn't designed for that big of motor" or "the airframe won't take the stress" or "it will be way too nose heavy with that motor" or "it will fly like a brick with that motor" or whatever you're thinking PLEASE don't reply telling me how ignorant or stupid I am. This plane flies great with a 150 and still floats on landing. I just don't want to hear your negative comments. Be adventurous and try something radical like NOSRAM is doing. I hear he is converting his UCD to use a gasoline motor, adding a smoke system, clipping the two outside ribs off the main wings, installing 5" main wheels, and adding some bomb drops. Personally, I can't wait to see it fly after he makes those conversions.

Did you guys reinforce the firewall ? How did you do it ? The firewall seem to be just a butt joint with a couple of 1/4" triangle stocks glued to the left/right sides. Scary :stupid:

I did not do any mods to strengthen anything on the plane, i.e. no glassing or pining the firewall, tri stock extra to the landing gear. I will see how all holds up the plane lands easy to me with this set up on bounching landing it will land 3 point with just a touch of elevator on the last 6" to 11" from the ground. She slows down nicely with the 6-pitch prop.

Prop/Engine combinations for UCD
 

My first UCD has an OS pumped 91FS and I've got a 15x6 APC prop. I think it's too much prop--engine seems to get pretty hot here in the GA summers (hot and humid). What props are the rest of you using with 91FS??? I'm thinking I should be using a 14x6 or even a 13x6.

I'm just starting UCD #2. I'll be using an OS 91FX with a Cline regulator. What props are you all using for this engine?

Warped, On your #2 with 91 fx, I have found my favorite prop to be the 15-6 Pro-Zinger. I have tried several but the Pro always seems the best. I love APC props as long as they are under 11". Over that they just seem way too heavy and really slow on throttle response. I have a couple 15-4W APCs I bought for my UCD that I'd be happy to sell cheap if anyone wants them.

PS at least 14" on the 91FS, 13" isn't enough to give decent vertical. IMHO

Finally finished my U-Can D0. Saito 100 with a Cline. The Cline built pressure like my friends YS91, and worked great for that tank. Now, it builds just slight pressure, and had to fatten the neddle way out (5 turns) to get it to run. I figure it's the duck bill valve. I have read somewhere others have used a check valve instead.

Anyone know what type, brand name, or where I could get one?

Fourmost is a company that makes a one-way valve that i have heard works well with the Cline pump. Got one at my LHS so they must be easily available.

Roll Rate?
 

Fellas,

What are you experiancing for a roll rate with this bird? I have used both the high and 3d throws but my bird's roll rate is nothing incredible. Is this normal? I thought it would literaly roll itself silly. Balance CG and lateral is dead on. Any suggestions on how to improve?

the rcs will finally pull out with authority,
on this plane running a 18 x 6W apc is the best prop for this motor and plane, previously swaped out the 18 x 6 mejzlik i am getting a grand less in rpm but you would not know it as the plane is stonger & much faster with the 18 x 6W better knife edge 2. i missed ya Saturday as i meet BADANDY, Dale and Lee R at the your field, BADANDY is bad on the sticks....

I know this has been discussed but what is the best cg for hovering on the ucando i have a YS 91 on mine 30% Magnum DZ fuel. Seems it doesnt hover as well as i would like i have it at 6 inches back now still playing around with props between the apc wide 16/4 and 15/6 regular apc

Flew my UCD for the first time yesderday. I have a cline regulator on mine. Started with needle valve 5 turns out per instructions. I have been turning it in gradually. I'm now about two turns out. I have about half a gallon thru it and am wondering where most guys with the cline regulator/saito 100 wound up needle valve wise. Yes, I know that altitude/temperature/humidity will affect the setting, but I just wanted a ball-park place to start. So far, it's run almost the same, not gaining or losing rpm as I have turned the needle valve in. Will it start to lose rpm on a tach as it would without the regulator?

KrayZC, are you going to use the engine cowling on that 1.4? mine used a rear exhaust, it fit just right but just noticed from the picture that it might not work on you side exhaust without some unsightly cutting out of the engine cover. I'm getting to love the sound a this gas engine makes over my other tuned pipe glow fuel engines, I'm still using the 17x8 but i retuned the needles and gained a few RPM on top and it really pulls out of a hover now and it seems to be idleing better on landing approaches now too, I guess it was just running to rich and flooding out some on the landing before. this plane is making me want to sell some of my other sport planes, I'm getting ready to put together a 40 size Funtana and kinda wish it was a 60 or 90 size so i could put anouther 1.4 gas in the Funtana too.

supertiger i am also going to try a tune pipe on the rcs as the cowl is going to have to be butcher seeing how i don't have the RE version as you have. I noticed that in your pic and said Hum!! :D

The 18 x 6W has very good speed compared to the 18 x 6 Mejzlik and pulls very hard on this light set-up.

Now on to the funtana i have that thing the Desert Aircraft one and i did pulll my RCS off of this to go ZDz 40 route wow :D that was the ticket.....

PS gas engines have a way of doing that to you oops it you forget your glow lighter or god forbid the battery dies, or you forget 2 bring the papertowels for glow clean up, no worries on the gas deal :cool:

I have the 100 with a cline and while the needle is not as sensitive as before it adjusts the same way. Open the throttle lean it slowly till rpms drop slightly. then richen it up about 1/4 turn. that will get you close . after you get it right you wont need to touch it again , unless you goextreme to temperature or altitude changes. You'll love the combo

Krayzc, I flew the u-can -do all day on Saturday and it flew great, but today Sunday everything changed the glitching problem has returned it only happens when I'm at idle coming in for a landing at the very worst time, i cant explain it everything was great for over a month then all of a sudden it starts glitching just like before when my ignition battery was too close to the receiver i fixed the problem then by moving by ignition battery up inside the canopy area near the back. Can you think of anything that can happen on these engines that would make a glitch appear out of no where? i even changed to a different radio to see if that was the problem but it didn't help. where is you ignition battery and receiver located on this plane?

my ignition battery and receiver is located under the fuel tank which is on the CG of 6" (Planes CG is 5.5 inches) my unit is 1/8 dowl pinned in the front former of the plane very near the firewall. my servo battery is located about 2" in front of the 3 rear mounted servos. i use a carbon fiber throttle rod, my servo and ignition switch sit very close to each other. make sure somethiing is not touching around that area along with making sure you wire are not chaffing around were you exit the fuse to get to the spark plug. I have mine wrapped in inner tube from a bike so that they don't chaff. last but not least make sure the ground is still tight on the motor mount area. Only at idle u say?
