RE: U Can Do 60

Luise, Right now on my Saito 100 I have a 15/4, which you could try. I'm not that familiar with the Mgnum, but more than likly you would use 14/4. On the flooding, when filling, make sure the throttle is closed and the throttle trim is down, that will stop it from siphoning off untill you are ready to start. As far as the rpm change when the plane is inverted, you may need some carb adjustments, and at this point I'm hopeing that someone with experience with the Magnum will step in to help. Te best CG for a new model is always the recommended CG, which in this case is 4-7/8" or you could go 5" Fly the plane untill you are comfortable with it and at that point experiment by moveing it back a little at a time. Its been back as far as 6-1/4" but that is not for everyone. I'm at 5-1/2" and it is just about where it starts to get hairy. Also it took many flights to get where it is at now. Go slow and enjoy the plane. Start fast and lose the plane. Good luck and keep us posted. Joe

Okay, just got back and the plane still dives to the wheels. I'm happy with the fact that it no longer drops the opposite wing with rudder applied. I guess that I will finally break down and mix it out, help CooMarlin!!!!! Much to my surprise, even at just 56 sq.in. there is still plenty of rudder. I will continue with a new one, keep roughly the same shape, add a little to the bottom and my target area is 65 sq. in.
Shoulda got a Cyclone!!!! Later, Joe

RE: U Can Do 60

I'm not sure how much this will help considering that everyones plane is different and also conidering that different CG's will have different affects on Knife Edge. But here is how I set my 9C up. It requires using 2 mixes that are linked to the same switch "D" in my case. With this mix and 3D rates I can knife edge loop the UCD.

PMIX5 Rudder->Aileron
Rate (left)+15% (right)+15%
Offset 0%
Master = rudder
slave=aileron
link=on
trim=off
sw=d
posi=down

PMIX7 Rudd->Elev
POS 1 = -11%
POS 2 = -6%
POS 3 = -0%
POS 4 = -6%
POS 5 = -11%
Mas=Rudd
Slav=Elev
SW=D
Posi=down

Thank U joe for the help, i will try the new modifications in my plane this sunday, i try with the 14X4 first, i put a servo reverser for 1 elevator, i have a Fut 6XAs TX, but now i am thinking to buy a 9C [sm=greedy.gif]for this plane[:o]. and you're right joe, i have to go slow...

Thanks!

Ok, I am not ready to read this entire thread.........

here is what I have

a UCD3D in a box (rare stuff here in belgium) and a OS 91 Surpass II (pump). If I assemble stock (except for more rigids pushrod), what may I expect regarding 3D performances ?

Is the Futaba S3151 servos enough for the u-can-do .46 with a saito .82?

RE: U Can Do 60

Coo, thanks for the info. Basically right now your at 15% with the rudder as master and the elevator as slave. On my JR 8103 the set up should be similar as long as I end up with the same equivilents. My CG is at 5-1/2" @ 8lbs AUW so it should be a good start. I might start with 10%. Thanks again, Joe

Joe, I have 7lbs 9 ounces on mine with a Saito 100. Where did the additional 7 ounces come from in yours ?

RE: U Can Do 60

Raj, can't figure that one out. This one is the heaviest that I've built yet. Denser batch of balsa on this particular production run? With the experience of multible builds on the UCD, I thought I got pretty good at keeping the weight down. Go figure, Joe

RE: U Can Do 60

Joe, do you think that the additional wing loading could be partly contrinuting to the coupling you're seeing ?

AcroJo 06-12-2004 08:28 AM

RE: U Can Do 60

Raj, its very possible and I am not ruling anything out at this point. Here is a curious aspect of same model, same build, different results. On the fourth one, which I put together for a friend, did everything exactly as the previous three, yet the five cell battery, which normally installed in the aft section of the compartment now had to go forward, under the fuel tank. Same engine, same gear, different results. Joe

Blackstalion04..

..Coo could well be right with the Saito option...without a doubt;). The .91FS is a non starter in the .46 UCD really....from a phyisical size point of view.....o.k.:)..o.k.:) no doubt someone, somewhere, has fitted one...but...it may be worth 10 miutes looking at the O.S .70 Ultimate ..V.light & compact ...AND it is a pumped motor ...this fact alone should effectively vapourise many issiues with inverted 4 strokes instaled in any UCD...big or small...it allows you to put the tank back closer to the C of G.... It hits the " Flooding " problem over the head with a lead pipe, should make engine setup simpler....constant fuel delivery at/in any attitude.. [8D]...O.K. the Saito is more Powerfull but ..:)do you really need that Extra 000.1 hp:) ...Dave..:)

RE: U Can Do 3D

Got the first shot at some 30% heli yesterday. Saito 100 with a 15/4 APC prop. Right now my opinion is mixed, Two weeks ago I did a tune up of flushing the tank and all fittings, new fuel lines and tightened up the line clamps. Finally reset the rocker arm clearance. Initial readings were 10500 static on 15% 4 stroke fuel. Dialed back to 98000 and had some fun. As the week progressed, the rpms dropped to 9800 now dialing back to 96000 and running warm @ about 160 F. Switched to 30% and boom, right up to 11050, dialed back to 10500 and stood back. Half a tank of hovering and it is now choking. 200 degrees F, ouch!!! Found it is running now at a 1/4 turn less on the high end with 30% as opposed to 15% 4 stroke. Only needed a 1/4 turn leaner on the low end to compensate for the additional oil content. Right now, I reset the valves again, and opened up the bottom of the cowl for additional air flow. Hope that is enough to keep it cooler because the heat is effecting the high end setting. I guess it would be leaning out. It was hot yesterday and now today is cool and windy. Don't know if I'll get up or if it would be a fair test on a cool day. Joe

RE: U Can Do 3D

Hi Joe, i fly my plane last sunday, i have too much control with the 15X4 prop, but i have a problem when the plane hovers, when the nose is up about 4 or 5 seconds the rpms goes down, i try to open the needle valve but i dont have good results, i dont know if the magnum 91 4S its not apropiate to the plane. the plane flies better, i dont have more problems with the flooding, and the rpms are stable at normal flight. i dont know what i can do, do you think is a good idea to change the engine?? i dont feel the sufficient power to do a reliable 3D flight.

AcroJo 06-15-2004 12:20 PM

RE: U Can Do 3D

Luise, hovering is killer. The engine really heats up in a hover, as compared to normal moves. When it heats up it has a tendency to lean out. So at this point you may want to give the high end needle 2 or 3 more clicks richer in anticipation of it heating up. Also after a hover, fly around for a minute to allow the engine to cool. As far as the Magnum 91 goes, let me check the specs on it as I am not familiar with it. How much fuel is through it to date? Joe

Luise, I couldn't find anything on it. Is that model engine discontinued? Hopefully, someone with experience with that engine will jump in. Good luck, Joe

IS the Surpass pumped? good luck with the maiden. Joe

SALMONBUG 06-15-2004 01:15 PM

RE: U Can Do 3D

depend of the age of the engine. the "new" surpass II (aprox 3 years old) is pumped

RE: U Can Do 3D

Hooray, finally maidened my 60 tonight! Was a bit windy so limited to some circuits and inverted stuff at height just to check it out. Couldn't resist popping it into the hover for a bit - seemed very stable. Landed after 10 mins to check everything out tonight so weather permitting will wring it out tomorrow evening.

YS91FZ is running like a top, 16x4w at 9300rpm. All in all very happy with the promise of more fun to come!

RE: U Can Do 3D

Hi joe, i try to give 3 cliks to the needle, but it didnt work, i think the magnum its not a good option for the u can do, especially if i want a 3d fly, the plane flies very good at normal conditions, but when you want more power the engine doesnt works well. here is the link for the engine information http://www.globalhobby.com/public/gallery/210806.asp

i am thinking to change the engine, it's a saito 100 in my mind.. do you think it's a good option?

that's a 2 stroke engine............

I am sure your problems are coming from fuel feeding issues. UCD3D gurus will certainly knock at the door and give you some tips
