Great planes ultimate 160

I just got my issue of Fly r/c .. and being an ultimate fan was interested in this plane... wonder if a DA 50 would bring the wing loading up too much to 3D it?

RE: Great planes ultimate 160
Lee, I have been seeing advertisements for this plane for some time now but can't seem to actually find it on the Tower web site or the Great Planes site. Did you see it anywhere but in the mag?
|
RE: Great planes ultimate 160
It's been on Tower's site for a while now. Never seems to be much information on new planes until they actually arrive in stock. Kinda strange since it IS the same company that manufactures the plane! :)

Thanks, you are right, not much info

RE: Great planes ultimate 160
I might need to get myself one of these. I have been wanting a good size ultimate for some time now.
|
RE: Great planes ultimate 160
Wonder how far off the AUW is.. if you could get it at around 11 it would be perfect for my YS FZ140L. if not i was thinking a DA 50 but wonder how it will 3d with the DA.. If they would have just gone a little bigger or a little smaller with it ..
|
RE: Great planes ultimate 160
anyone try to order one yet? I'm wondering about the lead time and backorder issues. Looks like exactly what I need. The tail blew off of my Creek 72" Giles yesterday so I have a 1.60 FX with a BCM pitts ready for a transplant. I would hope that the AUW is accurate because if they call it a 3d bird for a 1.6 glow, 12 lbs is already pushing it for thrust to weight ratio required for 3d. My giles was 12 lbs wet and could pull out of a hover easily, but if it were any heavier I would be hesitant to get stupid close to the deck knowing that I couldn't jam the throttle and get out quick.

RE: Great planes ultimate 160
ORIGINAL: drumbum Hey joe.. did you ever get any thrust#s yet? For now @ 8500 rpm with the 18/8 it showed 15.5 lbs. of thrust. Once seated and the rpms top off it will get the 18/10 prop and there should be a significant increase in thrust. Joe |
RE: Great planes ultimate 160
i guess we will find out how it does . EXTRA ADDICTs ultimate should be arriving soon
|
RE: Great planes ultimate 160
I got my Ultimate today!!!:D:D This plane is built very light and the construction is top notch! I have one minor spot to fix THANKS TO UPS[:@]! I will post my progress as I assemble it here. Oh the rudder is 18 1/2 inches tall it is huge!:D The ailerons are double beveled and quite large too. It should be an awesome 3D machine!!!
|
RE: Great planes ultimate 160
Please do post the build :D
|
RE: Great planes ultimate 160
What will be the powerhouse? And please post the estimated dry weight.
|
RE: Great planes ultimate 160
Well I will be running an OS BGX 3500 to start off but I plan on getting a Brisson 2.4 later on when I get the cash together. I have assembled the bottom wing, installed the cabane struts in the fuse I hope to complete the build this week. I will get some pics later on and post them because the ones on Tower do it no justice at all!
|
RE: Great planes ultimate 160
is it really as light as advertised? I'm just puzzled that it could be this light when the rest of the similar sized ultimates are aound 16-18 lbs. This is a 50cc sized ultimate (bw WS), but by weight, it's more of a 40cc size.
|
RE: Great planes ultimate 160
Whats it weigh? Joe
I'm a stupid head. I see all the specs in the first post. |
RE: Great planes ultimate 160
Yes I think it will come out very light. The fuse is made up of mostly stringers and light ply. The turtle deck is all foam but the firewall and motor box are built very strong. I will post some weights as soon as Drumbum gives me my scales back.
|
RE: Great planes ultimate 160
where can you get postal scales anyway?

Well here is my progress with the Ultimate. I must say I am very impressed with the fit and quality of this ARF it is one of the best I have put together so far!
|
RE: Great planes ultimate 160
Lookin' good. Keep the build progress coming
|
RE: Great planes ultimate 160
Has anyone thought of putting an EVO 35 on one of these?
|
RE: Great planes ultimate 160
I've got one on the way. Has anybody gotten an all-up weight on it yet? Just wondering if a 50 engine would be right for it. The manual states that it was flown with a DA 50, but was overpowered with it...my guess is that it should be about right.
What do you guy's think? |
RE: Great planes ultimate 160
if its overpowered by manufactures specs then it has to be just right:D
|
RE: Great planes ultimate 160
Well my progress has halted for a while as I went and ruptured a disc in my back[:@]! I think a 50cc would be awsome on this thing! I did a little comparing and this Ultimate is sligtly larger than the one put out by Aeroworks/ World models. I have not seen one of theirs in person say I can't comment on how they are built and they recommend a DA 50. The constuction of this one is top notch and seems to be very strong not to mention they give you the template in the manual plus 1/2 inch standoffs to install a Fugi 43. In my opinion any of the 50ccers would do great on this thing!
|
RE: Great planes ultimate 160
OUCH!!! That's bad company you have there Extra. Hope that gets away from you soon.
I did some checking and the GP Ulti has an even larger wingspan (one inch) and is two inches longer than the Wild Hare Ulti and it weighs around 16 pounds, so I think we will be on target with a 50. [sm=thumbup.gif] |
RE: Great planes ultimate 160
My question is: how come it's 2 lbs lighter than the WH Ultimate?
|
RE: Great planes ultimate 160
Well I will say it is light but right now I still have no radio, servos or motor installed and we know how companys fudge there advertised weights on planes just look at the F-90!
|
RE: Great planes ultimate 160
Anyway that you can weigh it now, with nothing installed?
|
RE: Great planes ultimate 160
Sorry I can't get a weight on it right now I have my scales loaned out.
|
RE: Great planes ultimate 160
I'd put a 50 in it for sure.
|
RE: Great planes ultimate 160
Well I have made a little more progress and I must say the fit and finish of this plane is awsome but, I will be damned if I am gonna trust a plane I am gonna 3D to solder clevices![:@] I just ordered 4-40 threaded rod that I will cover with carbon fibre tube for my linkages. So far that is my only gripe and I hope to get an all up weight on it this week. I must say I can't see 12.5 pounds even with an OS 160 I don't know where they got that from but we will see. I hope I am wrong but I se a DA 50 being the right combo for this plane or maybe a Moki 2.10.
|
RE: Great planes ultimate 160
Extra...I went to Lowe's last night and picked up the 4-40 all-thread rod that I needed to build my ultimate. It is pre-packaged (2 to a pack) and different lengths. I am doing the same as you, 4-40 rod plus carbon fibre...."rock solid"!!! I'm using DuBro safety clevis' also. No way do I see 13 pounds. Think a Brison 3.2 is my choice...to me it is an easier to set up engine than the DA 50 and doesn't cost as much. Just my preference though.
|
RE: Great planes ultimate 160
What makes you think that it won't come in at 13 lbs?
|
RE: Great planes ultimate 160
Well, if it comes out at 13 pounds, that will be the "ultimate." (Sorry bout that) It may with a OS 160, but I am not planning to use that engine.
|
RE: Great planes ultimate 160
I am getting my scales back this week so I will post some weights on this thing.
