RE: GP Cap 232
Well, I'll share my opinion. The canister part of the muffler is close, but not blocking enough of the fins to make a difference, IMO. There's something else going on, what, I have no idea. IF you are overheating, it usually is one of several things (pick any or all as they may apply)
1. Too big a prop= too heavy a load 2. Too lean a mixture = bad needle settings 3. Too little oil = no lubrication 4. Crappy oil = poor lubrication 5. Ignition timing too far advanced 6. Too little air flowing over cylinder heat 7. Too little air exiting cowling (see 6.) 8. Crappy engine with bad bearing, tight rod, bad ring, bad sleeve, etc. |
RE: GP Cap 232
Thanks for the input the first thing i will try this weekend is to put back the original muffler and see what happens.and go from there .

RE: GP Cap 232
Sound is an issue at my field and they pretty much insist that if you use gas you use a Canister muffler. Is anyone using a DA-50 in this plane with a Canister muffler? If so do you have information on the mods needed to make the tunnel for the canister?

RE: GP Cap 232
About the only can that may fit is the mini-pipe from Chip Hyde. I think Cheif aircraft still sells them. There is just not enough room to fit a full sized can in the airframe due to the wing mounting position. I measured up both the MTW75 and MTW75K (shorter but fatter) and both are too long by several inches.
Hanging them under the fusealge probably would not work since the plane is so low to the ground |
RE: GP Cap 232
That was my concern... Darn..
|
RE: GP Cap 232
I'd love to through a can is this one and my Ultimate but it jsut won't fit. I use the J'tec pitt on both these planes with a DA50 and it's not too bad with a CF prop.

RE: GP Cap 232
Hey Guys,
Just a update. Guess Bubba was right ,I got bored with the 160 FX. My DA 50 should be here Monday:D Buuba, Did you ever take any pics of your DA install? Was just trying to think were to put everything. Thanks P.S. I got the 3 inch standoffs |
RE: GP Cap 232
I'll grab some pics ater tonight or tomorrow for you
|
RE: GP Cap 232
Thanks Bubba!
By the way, I order a DL 50 for my Hanger 9 Extra 260.Their on back order but they now come with bigger mounting ears and DA style standoffs! |
RE: GP Cap 232
I've got a J'tec "quiet" pitts straped to ml DL 50 and I'm real happy with the noise level. I haven't checked it with a meter but I'm no louder than the 90 2 strokes at the field.
|
RE: GP Cap 232
Do they make one for the DA-50? It seems like a popular engine so I am thinking that probably do but I've been wrong before... a lot. :) If so does anyone have a link to a source to information and perhaps to buy such a muffler?
|
RE: GP Cap 232
they sure do. I;m sure the one he is using for the DL50 is the exact same
|
RE: GP Cap 232
Good information to have. I found their page but couldn't find anything quite called that. The closest thign i saw was the wraparound LARGE Pitts style, is that what you are referring to? Reportedly it has twice the volume of the std pitts and thus lower noise.

RE: GP Cap 232
I'm using the J'Tec "Standard" Pitts for the DA 50 on my DL 50. Fits perfect. NO change in rpm from stock muffler, and adds only about 6ozs more than stock muffler configuration. Not as quiet as the larger volume, I'm sure, but it works for me. Was around $98 with shipping, I think.
|
RE: GP Cap 232
yes that's the muffler, I talked to a guy at J'tec when I ordered the one I have and he said that you start getting some noice reduction when the volume of the muffler is 3-1/2 x the engine displacement. I actually ordered the DA muffler for my DL. They are both interchangeable (biggest reason I bought the DL). I had 6 flights on mine with the new muffler when the muffler vibrated off and fell into the middle of a corn field. No way to find it until they cut the corn. That was a 135 dollar hit to my wallet.

RE: GP Cap 232
Well I yanked the Moki 1.8 off my Cap and installed a DL-50. Wow, it really woke this bird up! It's amazing that the DL's final weight is only about 4 ounces heavier than the complete Moki. I had to raise the gear by using a 3/4" balsa block under the gear mount, but it worked perfect. The Mejzlik 23x8 prop barely cleared at stock height.

RE: GP Cap 232
Got the DA mounted on the Cap. But I remember I read somewhere on this thread that some right thrust was needed? So, how many washers did you guys have to add to the left side so it would pull straight up on vertical? Thought I'd ask you guys before I do any final work on the cowl. Thanks
|
RE: GP Cap 232
I have two washers on the left side of the motor, and none on the right side. It tracks straight as an arrow on up lines with the DL-50.
|
RE: GP Cap 232
So how does the large volume J-Tec muffler compare to the Canister for noise reduction? As good, close even?
|
RE: GP Cap 232
Only using my gas engine as a comparisons, the pitts style mufflers are loud, period. On my ZDZ 80 when running a header and cannister, i hear mostly prop noise, but with the Supersonic pitts muffler it's so loud it about splits your ear drums. Sounds cool though :)
|
RE: GP Cap 232
Is that 2 under each stand-off or one under each?
|
RE: GP Cap 232
Lou55
That should be two under each and probably one on the left side on the obttom one when facing the plane. This plane does require a bit of up-thrust, at least mine did and BTW...I saw the featured pic, nice job |
RE: GP Cap 232
Thanks buddy. Everyone keeps saying two on the left but I never knew if that was two under each. Have to dig five up and fix the CAP while I'm playing down here.:D:D:D:D P.S Why don' you give RadarController your impressions of the DL for the CAP? He's trying to decide on an engine.
|
RE: GP Cap 232
I'd certainly recommend the DL on this bird without hesitantion and the beauty is all the DA50 stuff bolts right to it.
Now this has nothing to do with the Cap and it came in the email I jsut got from TBM in their newsletter. this is one HUGE Pitt's and yes it is RC. You'll see that at the beginning when it takes a few guys to hold it http://www.flixxy.com/pitts-s1-rc-airplane.htm |
